  • Laser welded blanks are finding increased usage in many industrial applications, which are made of different sheet thickness or different material strengths joined together. In this study the heat flow problem in laser welding of the different steel sheet thickness was solved by using a finite element method, and a series of experiments wers carried out to confirm the validity of the numerical method.

  • In this study, the local displacement and moment characteristics of a plate stiffened with closed ribs are analyzed according to the dimensions of stiffened plates. The analyzed results of various stiffened plates under square distributed load show that the effect of the loading panel width to the local behavior is dominant but that of the next panel width is very small. And the local behavior of reference stiffened plates can be expressed by the angle between the plate and the rib, and that of other stiffened plates can be obtained by multiplying ratio functions of the loading panel width, plate thickness, rib thickness, rib height and next panel width and they give good results. Applying ratio functions to other loading sizes shows that the applicability of ratio functions except for the loading panel width is proved and the modified ratio functions of the loading panel width improve error ratios. Therefore, the local displacement and moments of a plate stiffened with closed ribs can easily achieve proper results regardless of the dimensions using ratio functions proposed in this study.

  • A shear connection in composite bridges with precast decks has considerable characteristics different from cast-in-place deck bridges such as shear pocket and bedding layer. Thus, it is necessary to build design basis of the shear connector in precast decks through the experiments. In order to estimate fatigue life of shear connector in precast deck bridges, push-out fatigue tests were conducted with parameter, bedding layer thickness. As a result of the tests, failure modes of shear connector were observed. Consequently, empirical S-N curve equations of stud shear connector in precast deck bridges were proposed in this paper.

  • The friction characteristics of natural rubber plates under various conditions including sliding speed, normal force, hardness, lubrication conditions and thickness of plate are analyzed experimentally. The frictional force and normal force are measured by a tester pin and a load ceil with strain gages. Experimental results suggest that the coefficient of friction decreases with increasing the hardness of rubber and decreasing the thickness of plate. The effect of sliding speed is not significant over the speed range employed. The coefficient of friction is found to be about 0.1 under oil lubrication condition and varies from 0.9 to 3.9 under no lubrication condition.

  • A 4-node assumed strain finite element based on higher order shear deformation theory is developed to investigate the behaviours of symmetric and unsymmetric laminated composite plates. The present element is based on Reddy's higher order shear deformation theory so that it can consider the parabolic distribution of shear deformation through plate thickness direction. In particular, assumed strain method is adopted to alleviate the shear locking phenomena inherited plate elements based on higher order shear deformation theory. The present finite element has seven degrees of freedom per node and denoted as HSA4. Numerical examples are carried out for symmetric and unsymmetric laminated composite plate with various thickness values. Numerical results are compared with reference solutions produced by other higher order shear deformation theories.

  • The purpose of this study is to formulate the local displacement and moments of a plate stiffened with open ribs according to the dimensions of stiffened plates. Analyzed results of various plates stiffened with rectangular and reverse T ribs show that the effect of the lower flange to the local behavior is very small, so the local behavior can be expressed by ratio functions of the rib space, web thickness, web height and plate thickness and the ratio functions of rectangular and reverse T ribs can be unioned. The application of ratio functions to other types of stiffened plates shows that the increment of the error ratio is so small compared with examples of this study that the applicability of this study is proved.

  • Concrete shear wall with opening is modeled as a rectangular thin plate. The stability analysis results are presented by the buckling coefficient, k, for two different boundary conditions. The other parameters whose variation have been considered are the ratio of the bending induced force to gravity force, a, the ratio of the horizontal shear force to the gravity force ratio, A and the change of location and the size of perforated part. To obtain the results by finite element method, an example plate has been divided into 27*9 square elements. Four node rectangular c.deg. continuous finite elements having three degrees of freedom per each node is adopted. It is generally concluded that the buckling coefficients decrease as the size of hole increases, and the location of hole moves to free edge of the wall.

  • This paper describes an experimental research on the structural behavior and the ultimate strength of longitudinally stiffened plates subjected to local, distortional, or mixed-mode buckling under compression. The stiffened plate undergoes local, distortional, or interactive local-distortional buckling according to the flexural rigidity of the plate's longitudinal stiffeners and the width-thickness ratios of the sub-panels of the stiffened plate. A significant post-buckling strength in the local and distortional modes affects the ultimate strength of the longitudinally stiffened plate. Compression tests were conducted on stiffened plates that were fabricated from 4mm-thick SM400 steel plates with a nominal yield stress of 235MPa. A simple strength formula for the Direct Strength Method based on the test results was proposed. This paper proves that the Direct Strength Method can properly predict the ultimate strength of stiffened plates when the local buckling and distortional buckling occur simultaneously or nearly simultaneously.

  • Change in the cortical thickness of long bones occurring with aging and osteoporosis is known to be a risk factor for fracture. The present study aims to investigate the dependencies of phase velocities of ultrasonic guided waves on the cortical thickness in 7 soft tissue-bone mimicking phantoms consisting of acrylic plates covered by a 2 mm-thick silicone rubber layer by using the axial transmission technique with a pair of transducers with a center frequency of 200 kHz and a diameter of 12.7 mm. Two distinct propagating waves with different velocities, the First Arriving Signal (FAS) and the Slow Guided Waved (SGW), were consistently observed for all the soft tissue-bone mimicking phantoms. The FAS velocity decreased slightly with increasing thickness, whereas the SGW velocity increased strongly with increasing thickness. The FAS and the SGW velocities were found to be closely consistent with the S0 and the A0 Lamb mode velocities for a free acrylic plate, respectively, suggesting that the presence of the soft tissue mimicking material (2 mm-thick silicone rubber layer) covering the acrylic plates does not influence significantly the velocity measurements.
