  • Investigation of in-situ ground in cold region is difficult due to low accessibility and environmental factors. In this study, correlation between dynamic cone resistance and shear strength is suggested to estimate the strength of frozen soils by using instrumented dynamic cone penetrometer. Tests were conducted in freezing chamber after preparing sand-silt mixture with 2.3% water content. Vertical stresses of 5 kPa and 10 kPa were applied during freezing, shearing, and penetration phase to compare the dynamic cone resistance and shear strength. The dynamic cone resistance, additionally, is calculated to minimize the effect of energy loss during hammer impact. Experimental results show that as the shear strength increases, the dynamic cone penetration index (DCPI) decreases nonlinearly, while the dynamic cone resistance increases linearly. This study provides the useful correlation to evaluate strength properties of the frozen soils from the dynamic cone penetration and direct shear tests.

  • The Concrete Capacity Design(CCD) method has been used in the design of anchor since 2001 and Korean design code specify that concrete breakout capacity of CIP anchor under seismic load shall be taken as 75% of static capacity. In this study, an experimental study was performed to evaluate the concrete breakout capacity of unreinforced CIP anchors under dynamic shear force. For the purpose, three static and dynamic shear-loading tests were conducted using 20mm diameter anchors, respectively. The edge distance of 120mm was considered in the tests. In the dynamic tests, 15 cycles pulsating load with 1Hz speed was applied and the magnitude of loading step was increased until concrete breakout failure occurs. From the tests, the concrete breakout capacity under dynamic shear loading showed nearly same capacity by static loading.

  • An experimental study was conducted to evaluate the breakout strength of stirrup-reinforced cast-in anchors under dynamic shear loadings. The shear loadings were applied in the manner specified in the ACI 355.2 and ETAG 001 for the seismic qualification tests. Test specimens were fabricated with M36 anchor (edge distance, 180mm) reinforced with D10 stirrups (spacing, 100mm). The specimens reached almost the breakout strength and thereafter fracture of anchor occurred. Additional tests with M42 anchor (edge distance, 160mm) reinforced with D6 bars (spacing, 100mm) were also conducted. The experimental results showed that the dynamic shear strength was not less than the static resistance. Based on the test results, it was shown that ACI 318 and ETAG 001 specifications estimate the breakout strength of stirrup-reinforced anchors conservatively as more reinforcement is provided.

  • This study presents static and dynamic strength of coal ashes collected from disposal site of power plant. Main compositions of coal ashes were bottom ashes. In order to evaluate static and dynamic characteristics of coal ash, NGI direct-simple shear tests, cyclic simple shear tests and direct shear tests were conducted. The strengths of coal ashes from those tests were compared to those of sands. Bottom ashes among coal ashes used for this study were classified as sand from the grain size distribution and show higher strength properties than the sands. For utilization of coal ashes in civil engineering project, mixing coal ashes with sandy soil using batch plant is inconvenient and the cost is higher than the spreading sand layer and coal layer alternately. In order to simulate both mixing type and layered type construction, sands and coal ashes were mixed with volume ratio 50:50 and prepared sand and coal ash layers alternately with the same volume ratio. From the tests mixed coal ashes-specimen shows slightly higher static and cyclic strength than the layered specimen at the same density. The higher strength seems due to the angular grain of bottom ashes. The cyclic stress ratio at liquefaction decreases rapidly as the number of cycle increases at mixed specimen than that of layered specimen.

  • In this study, an experimental study was performed to evaluate the shear resistance of cast-in-place(CIP) anchors reinforced with hairpin and stirrup bars under static and dynamic loads. The reinforcement was developed using D6 bars, and the anchors were installed with 20mm diameter and 120mm edge distance. Three tests were conducted for each type of reinforced anchor under static and dynamic shear load with a pulsating frequency of 1 Hz, respectively. It was found that the strength of hairpin-reinforced anchor was affected by the concrete cover and the dynamic tests showed no capacity reduction of anchors compared with static tests. The stirrup-reinforced anchor showed little increase of resistance compared with unreinforced anchor and the resistance under dynamic loading showed nearly same strength by static loading.

  • Because of Recent intensive rainfall, nationally landslides and slope failure phenomenon has been frequently occur. Providing proposed-measures to the natural disasters that occur in these localities and the slope, must be derived ground of strength parameters(shear strength) as a design input data. However, it is such as extra deforestation and a lot of economic costs in order to make the access to the current area and the slopes ground survey is required. Thus, by small dynamic cone penetration test machine using the human to carry in the field, it is possible to easily measure the characteristics and strength constant of the ground of more than one region. In this study through researching analysis of the domestic and foreign small dynamic cone penetration test method, it has proposed a cone material and test methods suitable for the country. Cone penetration test Nc in the field has comparated with analysis of the value and the standard penetration test N value. And, in addition to this, direct shear test and borehole shear test were performed by depth, bedrock, and soil type and passing #200 and the correlation of the Nc value. In particular, in the present study, for the sandy soil that has distict distribute in mountain, it is proposed relation of shear strength corresponding to the Nc value (cohesion and internal friction angle) in order to calculate such effective ground shear strength.

  • The most common housing type in Korea is low-rise buildings with unreinforced masonry walls (UMWs) that have been known as a vulnerable seismic-force-resisting system (SFRS) due to the lack of ductility capacities compared to high lateral stiffness of an UMW. However, there are still a little experimental investigation on the shear strength and stiffness of UMWs and on the seismic performance of buildings using UMWs as a SFRS. In Korea, the shear strength and stiffness of UMWs have been evaluated with the equations suggested in FEMA 356 which can not reflect the structural and material characteristics, and workmanship of domestic UMW construction. First of all, this study demonstrates the differences in shear strength and stiffness of UMWs obtained from between FEMA 356 and test results. The influence of these differences on the seismic performance of UMW buildings is then discussed with incremental dynamic analyses results of a prototype UMW building that were selected by the site survey of more than 200 UMW buildings and existing test results of UMWs. The seismic performance assessment of the prototype UMW building are analyzed based on collapse margin ratios and beta values repesenting uncertainty of seismic capacity. Analysis results show that the seismic performance of the UMW building estimated using the equations in FEMA 356 underestimates both a collapse margin ratio and a beta value compared to that estimated by test results. Whatever the estimation is carried out two cases, the seismic performance of the prototype building does not meet the criteria prescribed in a current Korean seismic code and about 90% collapse probability presents for more than 30-year-old UMW buildings under earthquakes with 2400 return years.

  • Undrained cyclic simple shear tests and undrained cyclic triaxial tests were performed on silt containing sand in order to investigate the effects of silt contents on the liquefaction strength and shear characteristics of the sand. From the view that the difference of liquefaction strength for different content of silt stems from dilatancy characteristics of the sand, stress-dilatancy relation of the sand was obtained from drained triaxial test in which the mean stress was kept constant. Considerations on liquefaction behaviors were made by comparing the drained and undrained behaviors of sands during static shear test. It is concluded that ${\lambda}$-value of the stress-dilatancy relation will be closely related to the liquefaction strength.

  • This study evaluated the static and dynamic shear strength of cast-in-place anchors reinforced with hairpin bars in uncracked and cracked concrete. The anchors 30mm in diameter reinforced with D10 hairpin bar were designed with an edge distance of 150mm and an embedment depth of 240mm. The cracked specimens consisted of the orthogonal and parallel cracks to the direction of shear loads, respectively. The dynamic strength was evaluated using seismic qualification tests based on the ACI 355.2 standard. The shear strength of the hairpin reinforced anchor was hardly correlated to the concrete cracks and the dynamic strength was similar to its static shear strength. Finally, a consideration on the design strength of hairpin reinforced anchors was presented.
