  • For shallow circular arches with large dynamic loading, use of linear analysis is no longer considered as practical and accurate. In this study, a method is presented for the dynamic analysis of the shallow circular arches in which geometric nonlinearity is dominant. A program is developed for analysis of the nonlinear dynamic behavior and for evaluation of the critical buckling loads of the shallow circular arches. Geometric nonlinearity is modeled using Lagrangian description of the motion and finite element analysis procedure is used to solve the dynamic equations of motion in which Newmark method is adopted as a time marching scheme. A shallow circular arch subject to radial step load is analyzed and the results are compared with those from other researches to verify the developed program. The critical buckling loads of shallow arches are evaluated using the non-dimensional parameter. Also, the results are compared with those from linear analysis.

  • The novel cut-and-cover tunnel construction method using rib-reinforced pre-cast arch segments has been recently developed and applied for practice to secure a structural stability of high covering and wide width section tunnels. Cut-and-cover tunnels are usually damaged by the seismic behavior of backfill grounds in case of a low covering condition. Seismic analyses are performed in this study to characterize the dynamic behavior of rib-reinforced pre-cast arch cut-and-cover tunnels. Seismic analyzes for 2 lane cast-in-place and rib-reinforced pre-cast arch cut-and-cover tunnels are carried out by using the commercial FDM program (FLAC2D) considering various field conditions such as the covering height embankment slope and excavation slope. It can be concluded that the amplification of seismic wave is reduced due to an increase in the structural stiffness induced by rib-reinforcement. The results show that the rib-reinforced pre-cast arch cut-and-cover tunnels are more effective against the seismic loading, compared to the cast-in-place cut-and-cover tunnels.

  • The dynamicresponse of biomimetic composites mimicking nacre under low velocity impact is investigated. The composites have hierarchical structures with a staggered pattern consisting of a protein and a mineral. To analyze the impact response of the composites, the finite element method is used. The effects of the hierarchical structures of the compositeson the dynamic response are examined. It is shown that the maximum stress, displacement and contact force in the composite subjected to low velocity impact decrease as the level of structural hierarchy increases.

  • In order to predict properly the effects of ground motion associated with earthquakes on underground radioactive waste disposal facilities, an understanding of the structural behavior of an underground opening in discontinuous rock masses subjected to dynamic loadings is essential. This paper includes literature review on computational models for discontinuous rock masses and on mathematical models for the structural analysis of underground opening. Then, structural analyses of underground openings using the distinct element computer program written for the static and dynamic analysis of discontinuous rock masses have been performed.

  • The object of this study is to propose a rate of vibration increase in the analysis of temporary rail non-fixed in the vertical direction and characterize the nonlinear dynamic behavior of temporary rail while considering longitudinal and latitudinal load, vibration and lifting. The rate of vibration increase is proposed through measurement of an actual structure that is largely affected by loading and vibration of the superstructure. Dynamic behavior was additionally characterized by the dynamic response resulting from nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis with vehicle loading, including the rate of vibration increase. As a result, the rate of vibration increase by the vibration of an Auto Bar Machine is determined as 7% and the maximum stress in the analysis of the nonlinear rail is increased 14.5% over that of linear rail, and temporary rail is shown to be very sensitive to the velocity of the superstructure.

  • In this study, the effect of hydrodynamic masses is investigated in the dynamic characteristics and earthquake response analyses of the submerged HANARO flow tubes. First, the consistent hydrodynamic masses of the surrounding water are obtained by finite element method. Then, modal analyses and response spectrum analyses are performed and verified by comparing the results with those measured from an experiment. Arbitrary cross-sections of submerged structures and boundary conditions of the surrounding fluid can be considered by using the general benefits of a finite element method comparing with the conventional analytical methods. Practical criteria based on parametric studies are proposed to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of HANARO flow tubes including the hydrodynamic masses.

  • Dynamic response analysis is carried out for slender marine structures such as tensioned risers and tethers of tension leg platform, which are subjected to floating vessel motions as well as environmental forces arising from ocean waves. A mumerical analysis procedure is developed by using finite element model of the structural member. Dynamic analses are performed in the time domain for regular waves. Parameter studies are carried out to highlight the effects of surface vessel motions on the lateral dynamics of the structures. Example results of displacements, bending stresses are compared for various in water depth, environmental condition and vessel motion. Some instability conditions of the structures due to time-varying tension by vessel heave motion are discussed through the example analyses. As the results, the interaction between vessel surge and heave motions amplifies the total structural response of a riser. In the case of a tether, the effect of vessel heave motion during heavy storm is seemed to be quite significant to lateral response of the structure.

  • For a shear-deformable beam-column element subjected io non-conservative forces, equations of motion and a finite element formulation are presented applying extended Hamilton's principle. The influence of non-conservative force's direction parameter, internal and external damping forces, and shear deformation and rotary inertia effects on divergence and flutter loads of Beck's columns are intensively investigated based on element stiffness, damping and mass matrixes derived for the non-conservative system.
