Assessment of Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Method for Early Detection of Frost Damage in Concrete (콘크리트의 초기동해 진단을 위한 초음파 속도법의 적용 가능성 평가)

  • This research delves into the evaluation of the suitability of ultrasonic pulse velocity as a diagnostic tool for early detection of frost damage in concrete. The investigation involves the measurement of compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity concerning the depth of freezing for individual mortar specimens, followed by an analysis of their microstructure and their interrelation. The findings indicate a consistent decrease in both compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity with increasing freezing depth. Furthermore, a correlation between compressive strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity concerning the depth of early frost damage is established. Consequently, the study asserts the potential of utilizing the ultrasonic pulse velocity method for early detection of frost damage in concrete, with prospects for quantifying the depth of damage through further research endeavors.

  • Domestic area of most be happened chloride deicer damage. Because daily mean temperature is below 0$^{\circ}C$ from the area of domestic most. Use of deicing chemicals has been and will continue to be a major part of highway snow and ice control methods. Chloride-containing chemicals such as calcium chloride or rock salt are main deicers for the road. Extensive use of chloride deicers is, however, not only the source of substantial cost penalties due to their corrosive action and ability to deterioration roadway surface materials but also the source of environmental damages. Particularly, it has been recognized that chlorides present in deicing agents can significantly increase concrete surface scaling. In severe cases, scaling can result in dislodgement of coarse aggregate. This research estimates that pH and test of specific pollutants, dynamic modulus of elasticity for freeze-thaw test of concrete were higher than those NaCl, $CaCl_2$, and NaCl+$CaCl_2$(7:3, w/w), also weight losses for scaling test of concrete were much lower than those of NaCl, $CaCl_2$, and NaCl+$CaCl_2$(7:3, w/w).

  • Histological changes of the abalone muscle occurring in the process of freezing as well as thawing were investigated, and its results were compared to the histological structure of fresh muscle. The muscles of the abalone were mainly composed of smooth muscle fibres, and its morphological structures is similar to those of the top shell. Mechanical damgage of the muscle fibres caused by freezing were not observed while a number of small ice crystals were found between the muscle fibres. The damage by thawing was not much remakable compare to the destruction of muscle fibres of fish.

  • 우리나라의 전면적인 약 95%가 계절적 동결지역에 속하며 동상과 융해로 인해 도로등 지반구조물은 피해을 입는다. 본 논문에서는 국립건설시험소의 10년간 실측자료중 지역별로 대표하여 15개 도시 528개 지점을 선정하여 최대동결지수를 4개 그룹(250이하, 250∼400, 400∼600, 600이상)으로 분류하여 분석하였다. 또한 동결심도 계산에 동결지수외에 흙의 함수비와 전조밀도를 각각 추가로 고려하여 새로운 산정식을 제시하였다. 그리고 지역에 따른 과다산정을 막기 위하여 동결지수 분류별로 4그룹으로 세분화하여 경제적인 설계가 가능하도록 하였다. 새 제안식과 기존식을 비교하여 보았을 때 새 제안식이 기존식보다 전반적으로 크게 산정되나 그 지역의 함수비나 건조밀도를 추가로 고려하였으므로 보다 합리적인 산정식이라 할 수 있다.

  • 우리나라는 계절적 특성으로 인하여 겨울에서 봄에 이르기까지 도로포장의 동결 융해가 반복되어 도로 파손을 유발 시키고 있다. 동결 융해로 인한 피해를 줄이기 위하여 도로포장 설계시 동상방지층을 별도로 설치를 하고 있으나 실효성 검증 없이 무분별하게 적용되고 있어 국가적으로 예산을 낭비하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 효과적인 동상방지층의 설계를 목적으로 계측된 온도 및 함수비 데이터를 효율적으로 관리하고 모니터링하는 기반을 마련하고자 한다.

Numerical Analysis of Frost Depth behind the Lining of Road Tunnel in Gangwon Province (수치해석을 통한 강원지역 도로터널 라이닝 배면지반의 동결깊이 분석)

  • Gangwon Province, located in the northeastern part of South Korea, is the coldest area in South Korea with 90% of the total area as mountainous. Therefore, tunnel damage has been reported continuously in winter. But there has been lack of researches on frost heave occurring behind tunnel lining. In this study, numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the frost depth in road tunnel constructed in Gangwon province. Based on the database on road tunnel and weather in Gangwon province, a standard tunnel shape and geotechnical properties of ground was determined. And then thermal analysis for the frost depth according to the temperature change and ground conditions were conducted. Analysis result showed that the sensitivity to frost heave of metamorphic rock and sedimentary rock is higher than sand. Lower initial ground temperature leads to deeper frost depth and consequently increases frost damage. In addition, lining thickness, specific heat capacity, and thermal conductivity also affect greatly on the variation of frost depth.

  • In the cold region, the frozen damages in highway tunnels and regular road tunnels have widely been investigated and reported, but the measurement has not been sufficient made. The average temperature in cold region is below the zero, resulting in that the damage due to freezing at the entrance/exit of tunnel is more severe than in the middle of tunnel. In this study, a heating element was developed to prevent the tunnel lining from being frozen by enforcing to increase the temperature of tunnel lining. Then field tests using the developed heating element were performed and it was ensured that the temperature of tunnel lining increased after a certain time.

Fruit Quality and Storability by Harvest Time at 'Fuji'/M.9 Apple Orchard Located in the Area with a High Air Temperature during the Fall Season (가을철 기온이 높은 지역에 위치한 '후지'/M.9 사과원의 수확시기에 따른 과실품질과 저장성)

  • This study was conducted for three years (2007, 2009, and 2010) to investigate the changes in fruit quality during maturation, and the quality and storage ability of fruits harvested at different times of 'Fuji' apple in Daegu region with a high air temperature during the fall season. Changes in apple fruit quality during the maturation period were investigated from 120-135 days to 183-198 days after full bloom. In comparing quality and storage ability of fruits harvested at different times, fruits harvested more than 180 days after full bloom were used. During the maturation period, poor coloring was the problem for 'Fuji' apple in Daegu region by the high air temperature about $20^{\circ}C$. In comparing quality of fruits harvested at different times, the soluble solid contents and hunter a value were increased by the extended harvest time. Fruit weight during harvest was not affected by different harvest time, while the fruit firmness and titratable acidity during harvest were decreased critically when the freezing damage happened. Ethylene production, fruit firmness, and titratable acidity during cold storage for twenty weeks did not differ according to the different harvest time. Soluble solid contents of fruits harvested at 216 days after full bloom in 2009 were similar at the time of harvest and cold storage. For fruits harvested at 201 days after full bloom, soluble solid content during cold storage was higher than during harvest time. However fruit firmness, soluble solid content, and titratable acidity after cold storage of fruit harvested after freezing damage was lower than those of the fruit harvested before freezing damage. The results show that the extended harvest time of 'Fuji' apples about 2-4 weeks from 180-200 days after full bloom in area with above-air temperature during fall season was seemed to be beneficial to enhancing soluble solid contents and fruit red color, but harvesting after the middle of November was dangerous because minimum air temperature began to fall under $-3.0^{\circ}C$.

STUDIES ON THE FREEZING OF YELLOW SEA BREAM (옥돔의 동결에 관한 연구 2. 동결에 의한 옥돔조직의 변화)

  • Histological changes of yellow sea bream, Branchiostegus japonicus japonicus, were observed under microscope during freezing storage for 6 months at $65^{\circ}C$ and $-35^{\circ}C$, and the results were compared with the muscle structure of fresh muscle. The freezing storage of yellow sea bream at $-^{\circ}C$ showed more changes in muscle structure than that stored at $-35^{\circ}C$. In the view point of the changes of the muscle structure, the yellow sea bream can be stored up to 1 month at $65^{\circ}C$ and 3 months at $-35^{\circ}C$. The freezing of yellow sea bream at $-5^{\circ}C$ showed higher extracellular freezing than that at $-35^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper presents the experimental test results on moisture and freeze-thaw resistance of hot mix crumb rubber modified (CRM) asphalt concrete mixture. To compare the differences in mechanical properties of conventional and CRM asphalt concretes, various tests were conducted under different moisture conditions and freeze-thaw cycles. Marshall mix design was also performed to determine the optimum asphalt contents for the both asphalt concrete mixtures. Test results revealed that the moisture and freeze-thaw resistance of CRM asphalt mixture was superior to the conventional asphalt concrete. As a result, it is considered that the utilization of waste tires in asphalt pavements has the potential of minimizing the damage due to the moisture and freeze-thaw.
