Computer Assisted EPID Analysis of Breast Intrafractional and Interfractional Positioning Error (유방암 방사선치료에 있어 치료도중 및 분할치료 간 위치오차에 대한 전자포탈영상의 컴퓨터를 이용한 자동 분석)

  • Automated analysis software was developed to measure the magnitude of the intrafractional and interfractional errors during breast radiation treatments. Error analysis results are important for determining suitable planning target volumes (PTV) prior to Implementing breast-conserving 3-D conformal radiation treatment (CRT). The electrical portal imaging device (EPID) used for this study was a Portal Vision LC250 liquid-filled ionization detector (fast frame-averaging mode, 1.4 frames per second, 256X256 pixels). Twelve patients were imaged for a minimum of 7 treatment days. During each treatment day, an average of 8 to 9 images per field were acquired (dose rate of 400 MU/minute). We developed automated image analysis software to quantitatively analyze 2,931 images (encompassing 720 measurements). Standard deviations ($\sigma$) of intrafractional (breathing motion) and intefractional (setup uncertainty) errors were calculated. The PTV margin to include the clinical target volume (CTV) with 95% confidence level was calculated as $2\;(1.96\;{\sigma})$. To compensate for intra-fractional error (mainly due to breathing motion) the required PTV margin ranged from 2 mm to 4 mm. However, PTV margins compensating for intefractional error ranged from 7 mm to 31 mm. The total average error observed for 12 patients was 17 mm. The intefractional setup error ranged from 2 to 15 times larger than intrafractional errors associated with breathing motion. Prior to 3-D conformal radiation treatment or IMRT breast treatment, the magnitude of setup errors must be measured and properly incorporated into the PTV. To reduce large PTVs for breast IMRT or 3-D CRT, an image-guided system would be extremely valuable, if not required. EPID systems should incorporate automated analysis software as described in this report to process and take advantage of the large numbers of EPID images available for error analysis which will help Individual clinics arrive at an appropriate PTV for their practice. Such systems can also provide valuable patient monitoring information with minimal effort.

난온대 상록수림지역의 식생구조와 천이계열

  • Vegetational structure and successional sere were investigated for the evergreen and nearby deciduous broad-leaved forests in inland areas (Turyunsan, Pulgapsan) and south- western island areas (Hongdo, Chindo). The evergreen broad-leaved forests of the four areas showed a sera1 stage with an age structure mostly under fifty years old. Dominant evergreen broad-leaved species in canopy layer were Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Machilus thunbergii, Quercus acuta, Q. stenophylla, Q. glauca, and Ncolitsea serzceu. Succession of the forest vegetation in the surveyed areas was proceeding from deciduous broad-leaved trees to evergreen broad-leaved trees. The species of climax stage were assumed to be Machilus thunbergii, iVeolitseu sericea and Dendropanax morbifera in canopy layer, Aucuba japonica and Machilus japonica in subtree and shrub layer.

Automated radiation field edge detection in portal image using optimal threshold value (최적 문턱치 설정을 이용한 포탈영상에서의 자동 에지탐지 기법에 관한 연구)

  • Because of the high energy of the treatment beam, contrast of portal films is very poor. Many image processing techniques have been applied to the portal images but a significant drawback is the loss of definition on the edges of the treatment field. Analysis of this problem shows that it may be remedied by separating the treatment field from the background prior to enhancement and uslng only the pixels within the field boundary in the enhancement procedure. A new edge extraction algorithm for accurate extraction of the radiation field boundary from portal Images has been developed for contrast enhancement of portal images. In this paper, portal image segmentation algorithm based on Sobel filtration, labelling processes and morphological thinning has been presented. This algorithm could automatically search the optimal threshold value which is sensitive to the variation of the type and quality of portal images.

  • Recently, negative emotional responses by drivers are a growing problem, which leads to not only a traffic accident but a crime so called 'road rage' in countries with heavy traffics including South Korea. Under such a circumstance, measuring stress- and fatigue-induced emotional responses by means of wireless communication and a wearable system would be useful. The purpose of this study is to implement a system that measures various signals from a driver, derives and monitors his emotional responses from the measurements and verify its derivations with reliability. This paper, as a first part of the research, describes how the system has been implemented with experimental methods.

  • We experienced a case of pleural effusion while treating postherpetic neuralgia in a 70 year old male patient. The patient had scar and color change on the skin along the course of the right Th4-5 intercostal nerve, characteristics of healed herpes zoster. The patient also complained of severe pain along the lesion site which made sleeping difficult. He had been treated with; epidural blocks with or without catheterization; epidural or regional corticosteroids; multiple intraspinal and intercostal blocks with local anesthetic; or neurolytic, alcohol, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, etc., for about six months by the time of pleural effusion development. We came to the conclusion that the effusion was due to pleural irritation by multiple intercostal nerve blocks, because it was bloody and developed on the affected right side, although the patient had a history of a certain hepatic pathology and pulmonary tuberculosis which may be a predisposing factor to the effusion.

  • As a method of variable valve train(VVT), Electro-Mechanical Valve(EMV) has been studied. Compared with conventional VVT system, the EMV system has a relatively simple structure. The system has two electromagnets, springs and an armature. The system can be operated by reciprocal action between armature and two electromagnets. And, the operating event can be controlled by electrical signal from controller. Therefore, reduction of emission and fuel consumption can be achieved through valve event control at each engine operating condition. In this study, characteristics of EMV system were investigated by simulations and experiments. The results of simulation and experiment show that the core shape and material characteristics are dominant parameters on magnetic force and delay time. In order to apply the system to commercial engine, it has a compact size and high stiffness springs(50N/mm) to increase the valve speed. Because of high valve seating velocity, loud noise and high impact force generated, which can lead to reduction of actuator durability. Therefore, further research is required to reduce valve seating velocity.

  • Advanced overload protection module for full scale airframe structural test was developed by improving the existing overload protection module. When performing the full scale airframe structural test, overload can be applied to the test article due to unexpected situations such as system shutdown, test article failure, and deficiency of design strength. Therefore, the overload protection module is needed for protecting the test article in unexpected overload situations. In this paper, the function of the existing overload protection module was summarized for each component and the problems encountered when using it in structural test were analyzed in addition, the development of advanced overload protection module was described.

  • Electrolysis of aqueous solution produces hydroxide ions and proton ions for the hydrolysis of reactive organic compounds, and oxidizing agent such as hypochlorite ions for the oxidative decomposition of organic chemicals. Electrolytic decomposition of dying chemicals was tested with our custom made system, and analyzed by HPLC and UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The electrolytic system could decompose dying chemicals with very high reactivity and low cost. Disposal of byproduct and refill of reactant during electrolysis was not necessary. Decomposition time of dying chemicals is compared under similar conditions, and application to water purification is discussed.

  • 국내에서 사용되는 밭농업용 전동차는 산업용 DC MOTOR를 사용하고 있는 실정이다 왜냐하면 농업용 DC MOTOR는 그 수요가 미미해서 개발상품이 거의 없는 실정이다. 산업용DC MOTOR는 고정된 장치에 부착이 되어 있어 사용상에 별 문제가 없지만 밭농업용 전동차는 비포장 도로에 사용되고 있어 충격이나 과부하에 견디지 못하여 운행도중 심한충격이나 하중 또는 진동에 반복하중에 견디지 못하여 파괴되거나 소음등이 많이 나는경우가 많다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 이를 개선하기 위해 감속기의 재질을 분석하고 마찰 마멸이 일어나는 부분의 재질변경과 표면열처리 등을 통하여 내구성을 증대에 대한연구를 실행 하였다.

  • Lumbar disc herniation in the adolescent is rare. The clinical features of adolescent lumbar disc herniation are typically different from those of adults. Many adolescent with that disease may be misdiagnosed as minor trauma, muscle sprain, tight hamstrings or scoliosis. Published series reiterate that adolescents, as opposed to adults, do not respond well to conservative treatment. In adolescent lumbar disc herniation with hamstring tightness, the neurologic defects are improved shortly after, discectomy, but the hamstring tightness continue and remain even after 1 year. Earlier discectomy and adjunct postsurgical conservative measures can provide a greater opportunity for correction and stabilization of scoliotic posture. We here report on a case of adolescent lumbar disc herniation that was misdiagnosed by knee injury during 2 years. After posterior partial discectomy, the hamstring tightness and scoliosis was disappeared without complication.
