  • A pixel-based approach to urban quality of life assessment can be regarded as a spatial decision problem under the condition of complexity because it searches the urban space for evidence of hot spots of quality of life based on multiple and differentially weighted evaluation criteria. Such an assessment involves inappropriate scaling of several incommensurate criteria, much unstructured subjectivity in the decision maker's judgment, and the large data handling in a raster GIS environment. There is a need for identifying alternative approaches to tackle the ill-structured problem in urban quality of life assessment. In this context, this research proposes and implements a spatial multicriteria analysis approach to evaluate urban quality of life in a raster GIS environment. The implementation of this methodology is illustrated with a case study of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Results indicate that the proposed methodology may provide an alternative approach for evaluating the quality of life in an urban environment.

  • The aims of this study were to investigate the level of activity in the elderly residing in city and rural area and to determine the contributing factors to quality of life (QOL). Subjects were 537 who were older than 60 years of age. QOL was assessed by the SF-36, and the level of activity was assessed by the Korean Activity Checklist. QOL in the elderly residing in city was higher than that in the elderly residing in rural area, and the level of activity was also higher in the elderly residing in city in instrumental activities of daily living, low and high level of physical activity, and social activity compared with the elderly residing in rural area. There was a significant correlation between the level of activity and QOL. The contributing factors to QOL were QOL lower level scores, the Korean Activity Checklist scores, health status, and occupation in the elderly residing in city, whereas the contributing factors to QOL were QOL lower level scores, the Korean Activity Checklist scores, health status, age, and level of education in the elderly residing in rural area. From the findings of this study, the environment in that the elderly can enjoy meaningful activity should be constructed and various programs should be developed.

  • Although ordinary least squares (OLS) regression analysis can be used to examine the spatial relationships between environmental equity and urban quality of life, this global method may mask the local variations in the relationships between them. These geographical variations can not be captured without using local methods. In this context, this paper explores the spatially varying relationships between environmental equity and urban quality of life across the Atlanta metropolitan area by geographically weighted regression (GWR), a local method. Environmental equity and urban quality of life were quantified with an integrated approach of GIS and remote sensing. Results show that generally, there is a negatively significant relationship between them over the Atlanta metropolitan area. The results also suggest that the relationships between environmental equity and urban quality of life vary significantly over space and the GWR (local) model is a significant improvement on the OLS (global) model for the Atlanta metropolitan area.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare urban-rural differences on influencing factors of health related quality of life(HRQoL) of the elderly in senior center. Methods: The subjects were 902 older adults (571 from urban areas, 331 from rural areas). Data were collected using a questionnaire from 20 July to 31 August, 2011. The SPSS/WIN program was used for data analysis. Results: For older adults of urban areas, the influencing factors of HRQoL were depression, age, subjective health, drinking, number of chronic disease, and smoking. On the other hand, the influencing factors of HRQoL of older adults of rural areas were depression, subjective health, number of chronic disease, and educational level. The significant factors of HRQoL were depression, subjective, and number of chronic disease in both urban and rural areas. Conclusion: Public health nurses should consider urban-rural differences when designing HRQoL enhancing program for the elderly in senior center.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare factors influencing the quality of life of osteoarthritis patients in urban and rural areas. The data were derived from the sixth Korea national health and nutrition examination survey in 2014 and analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics version 21.0 software package considering complex samples analysis. The subjects of study were 599 adults with osteoarthritis over 50 years. The results of the study show that the factors affecting the urban patients' quality of life are healthcare coverage types, knee joint pain, knee ankylosis, hip joint pain, low back pain, limited activities, and subjective health status. The rural patients' quality of life are influenced by knee joint pain, limited activities, and alcohol consumptions. Therefore, the government should create differentiating strategies and approaches, including community rehabilitation programs, to improve the quality of life of urban and rural patients with osteoarthritis.

  • The purpose of this study, regarding the effect of the marriage immigrant women's marriage adaptation living in urban and rural areas on their quality of the life, is to analyze whether there are any differences in the moderating effect of support from spouses and families for different areas of residence. This is in order to serve as the preliminary data for preparing intervention strategies that are suited to different areas of residence, so that the quality of life of marriage immigrant women may be improved. This study is a correlational research that targeted 304 marriage immigrant women living in urban and rural areas (148 in urban areas, 156 in rural areas). The study revealed that the support from spouses and families, marriage adaption, and the quality of life were lower in rural than in urban areas and that support from spouses and families, and marriage adaptation had a significant positive correlation for all areas of residence. Also, there was a moderating effect of support from spouses and families in the effect relationship between marriage adaptation and the quality of life. Also, it appeared that this moderating effect was more important in rural than in urban areas. On the basis of the results of this study, we propose that customized intervention strategies for each area of residence be developed so that regardless of the area, migrant women will be able to lead a marriage well and live a fulfilling life.
