  • Hamburg's development politics like "metropolis Hamburg - a growing city" demonstrates an important economic and demographic growth during 1997 to 2008. Beyond the positive factors with the idea of creative city, only selected class of people are involved in the city's active living, the others experience only gentrification. The G$\ddot{a}$ngeviertel, where the Hamburg's working class and dockworkers had lived, will be analysed as a historical important place of the gentrification since the end of the 19'century. This paper focuses on the actual Hamburg's movement of the initiatives "Komm in die G$\ddot{a}$nge" and " Right to the City", which took over the last 12 buildings of the G$\ddot{a}$ngeviertel. The G$\ddot{a}$ngeviertel Project, with the slogan "the city is neither a business nor a brand, but a community" could be an example of an alternative and sustainable solution for better living in the urban area of the Hamburg.

  • Recently, policies of metropolitan councils and primary local governments are diversely developing for the creation of child friendly cities. This study attempts to deal with implications that discussions on child friendly cities, which are recently becoming issues of local communities, have as a form of universal welfare on dimensions of child welfare along with discussions of the direction to which those implications can be applied. For this, this study was conducted largely in three parts. First, it observes the contents of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child which is the spirit and basic foundation of child friendly cities and through this, it examines child welfare paradigms as a universal form of welfare and second, it observes the historical origin of child friendly cities that have modern significance along with the main characteristics of child friendly cities, and third, it explores methods with which to apply locality based community resource connections that currently exist to policies of child friendly cities.

  • The displacement of business tenants is of growing concern in urban redevelopment. This research focuses on why business tenants have not collectively taken action against urban redevelopment and explores how their rights can be improved. It met the research aim through a case study on one urban redevelopment area in Yongsan. Although urban redevelopment plans create many problems for business tenants, there is no effective mechanism in place to enable them to get involved in the decision-making procedures of urban planning. They are collectively and individually powerless in urban politics, so they do not have enough opportunities to change the Korean urban redevelopment system. The findings from this research suggest that many tenants have been apathetic to anti-gentrification movements due to their powerlessness in the urban redevelopment domain. In order to overcome structural injustice, it is important to improve business tenants' awareness of 'the right to the city' and enforce strong legislation to safeguard tenants.

  • This study aimed to explore goals and development process of Child·youth Friendly Cities certified by UNICEF Korea and to provide a research basis for promotion and development of Child·youth friendly cities in Korea. Researchers conducted in-depth interviews with experts in two cities designated as UNICEF Child·youth Friendly Cities in early days. The findings showed that in order to successfully build and maintain friendly cities for children and youth, active interest and efforts of local governors and government officials for promoting friendly cities and policy enforcement based on four principles of child rights were required as prerequisite. In relation to managing Child·youth friendly cities, two cities selected as cases of this study provided universal social welfare programs for children and youth and expanded after-school care services for local students. Moreover they tried to promote decision making and protect rights of children and youth by allowing them to participate in community programs. The important distinctions of these cities were that they established a department exclusively for children and youth and closely cooperated with experts in private sectors. However, participants agreed that there should be more comprehensive and multilateral approach for building Child·youth friendly cities, adoption of incentive system for certification of Child·youth friendly cities and more active promotion of the UNICEF project. In conclusion, the researchers proposed policy implications.

  • The uses of land were relatively simple in the old days, but they are being expanded rapidly to the aboveground and underground due to the urban concentration, the large-scale urban development and so on in these days. Accordingly, the concept of the rights to lands grows from 2D to 3D, and many studies about the 3D cadastral information have been performed in recent years. Several studies were performed about the construction and the visualization of the 3D cadastral information, but most of them focused on the 3D visualization of the buildings and facilities. However, it is more desirable to visualize the individual objects of the rights to lands while considering 'the information on the rights' as well as the 'physical information'. Therefore it is supposed to construct and use the 3D cadastral information based on the individual objects of the rights in this paper. The level of the cadastral information will be upgraded by making and describing more detailed 3D cadastral information through this paper. And also the applicability of the 3D cadastral information will be improved when it is used with the real estate information, the demographic information and many others.

  • In this paper, we study a sample design for survey on goodwill in retail properties to provide a protecting policy for small traders and tenants, to use basic data for a dispute case related to goodwill. Since goodwill in retail properties is occurred by individual rent company, we use the census on establishments from the Statistics Korea as population. First of all, we consider preferentially seven metropolitan cities in which there are more than half of population. Total sample size is decided as 8,000. We allocate the sample size for markets as stratum in each city using proportional formula and the sample size for industrial classifications in each market using root proportional formula. Also we compute survey weights and calculate estimators, standard errors and interval of estimators for each characteristic such as type of establishments and market in seven metropolitan cities.

  • This paper is to see what appears to be an economic crisis as urban crisis, to explore its emerging process and its major distinctive figures in the context of S. Korea, and to consider alternatives to overcome such an urban crisis. For this purpose, it first tries to show that the capitalist economic development (i.e. capital accumulation) has been stimulated and driven largely by extending investments into built environments. Then it analyzes how crises of overaccumulation, coupled with other crises such as the IMF crisis in 1997 and the financial crisis in 2008 which have been brought about by serious impacts of foreign financial capitals working on the global level, have led to accumulating of huge surplus reserves within both big companies and the central government on the one hand, increasing tremendously debts of households as well as government and private companies on the other. In particular, the debt crisis seems to be accelerated by fictitious capital generated through government's financial strategies to promote both supplies and demands in housing and property markets. There seem several ways of overcoming the urban crisis spiraled around accumulating surplus capital and increasing financial debt; raising real income, moderating investments into built environment, and increasing inputs into the fields of technology and well-being. In order to open up these ways, it is concluded, recent urban movements in terms of the right to the city are required not only to make the government and capital to do so, but also to realize interest of urban people who have produced such surplus but who are suffering from the debt crisis.
