  • Recently, the publishing community now recognizes the importance of metadata in customers' buying decisions. As a result, they are more interested in effective metadata creation and quality maintenance, as well as standardization of exchanging system in the supply chain. As the library community also investigates the economic effectiveness of creating metadata, they try to find the best model for simplifying metadata creation by using sources close to the original. This study analyzes metadata work flow which had same source but be used in different fields by their own type and standard. It also discusses the same issues about each section and possibility about interoperation. Finally this paper tries to find an effective creation and distribution model of book metadata which can be used in domestic publishing and the library community.

  • In the library domain, the metadata concerning the journal and the articles published in the respective journal are the important attributes that can be used to search academic related information. In order to conduct this study, the American JATS standard and the XML DTDs of journal articles commonly used by well-known publishers were used. By comparing JATS standard to XML DTDs used by Elsevier and Springer, we were able to extract a total of 50 metadata elements(10 about the journals, 7 about the issues, 22 about the articles, and 11 about the authors). Additionally, we identified a total of 7 mandatory elements, 9 applicable mandatory elements, and 34 optional metadata elements. The implication of this study is that we selected metadata elements using XML DTDs that are used in the real world.

  • In order to overcome the problems of current approaches to metadata interoperability based on element mapping, this research proposed Master Element Framework that is an alternative approach to metadata interoperability. It is an approach to integrate metadata elements that have the same value, instead of direct mapping between similar elements. Master Element Framework is constructed to semantically integrate metadata elements in a hierarchical order and to interconnect between heterogeneous metadata standards. This approach is expected to be an alternative approach to metadata interoperability.

  • Semantic quirks about the concept of metadata are briefly probed. The reasons behind the conceptual drift are also reviewed. Regarding different formats of metadata, the rationale behind the creation of new formats, their characteristics in relation to MARC format, and problems and methods of conversion or integration of metadata are investigated as background study. RDF (Resource Description Framework) as an integration tool for different metadata standards and Metadata Registry as a candidate for the purpose are studied and the both are compared. It is concluded that two approaches are not mutually exclusive, rather they are complimentary.

  • In the current information environment around the library community, metadata is recognized as a sophisticated and powerful tool that can manage and represent information resources. However, with the discreet use of the concepts of metadata and metadata standard, there is no clear boundary that differentiates metadata standard from simple resource description and traditional bibliographic structure, leading to confusion as to what a metadata and metadata standard is. To consider these issues, this research discussed what metadata and metadata standards are based previous definitions of metadata. Based on those definitions, the fundamental concept of metadata is reestablished to be properly used in the library community.

  • What is introduced in this paper is current and important issues for efficient interoperability between different metadata such as Dublin Cere, MARC 21, and INDECS. Five major principles have been suggested here for effective interoperability between metadata based on the contents of crosswalking in White Paper of NISO. An INDECS based metadata framework, ONIX is compared to MARC and Dublin Core.

  • Although organizing standardized metadata is important for effective management of cultural heritage information, current metadata are represented differently according to the properties of the resources or objectives of the organizations in which they are accumulated. This research compared 6 different metadata formats and created 18 data elements for constructing databases. A religious architecture heritage information database was constructed based on 72 historic religious architectures, each composing of three parts. An ontology based on religious architecture heritage information was designed using a revised CIDOC-CRM, and was developed with a semi-automated corpus program.

  • This paper describes the major components of ISO/IEC 11179 metadata registry (MDR) standard designed to promote data interoperability between systems, explains and discusses semantic web technology and Web ontology languages initiated by W3C that can be employed to further enhance data interoperability, and finally proposes a framework for a new RDF/OWL-based MDR to convert from the current human-readable MDR to machine-readable MDR. If the new MDR is successful, we might be able to offer a better customized information service to users. The future research will be concerned with evaluating objectively the effectiveness of machine-readable MDR in meeting the needs of real users.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the metadata elements of institutional repository using DSpace and to provide the directions and strategies for constructing metadata. To the end, discussed in details are (1) understanding the background of development, features, elements of metadata, (2) figuring out the common metadata elements and the differentiated metadata elements for the institutional repository, (3) examining the search methods, search elements, and display elements of the insitutional repository, and (4) based on theses, suggested are directions and strategies for metadata of institutional repository using DSpace. The research methods were used such as literature review, the analysis of 4 domestic institutional repository.
