A Study on Information Need and Use Behavior of Doctors (의사들의 정보요구 및 이용행태에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide for efficient health information service which doctors may use for their better medical practice and scientific research. 177 doctors were surveyed from December 3 to December 21th in 2007. This study mentioned activities of information need and use that were evaluated by information gathering methods used, information source, frequency of use, and degree of satisfaction toward library services. Doctors showed that they need information mainly to know the recent research results in their interesting subject field and to treat a patient. Doctors trended to obtain information through internet search because easy access and easy use, accuracy and up to dateness of information use. Doctors trended to seek information mainly through library, but they showed relatively low frequency of library use because they do not know how to use it.

The Library Anxiety of Information Users in their 20s in East-Asia (동아시아 청년층 정보이용자의 도서관불안에 관한 연구)

  • This study analyzed library awareness and anxiety among people in their 20s living in East Asia. The objective is to develop the international library cooperation agenda for life-long education proliferation. User groups in Korea, China, and Japan were investigated to understand the differences in library awareness based on the situational contexts such as preferred resources, use frequency, educational level, and gender. Results of the data analysis showed the correlation between library anxiety and use patterns such as preferred information sources and frequency of use. Specifically, the user group in China has the highest level of library anxiety with every factor. Also, the Korean user group was measured to have the lowest level of library anxiety in terms of digital information factor. Based on these results, the study presents several recommendations for resolving library anxiety such as embracing new information need with regard to environmental change and suggesting a new space policy for libraries.

  • The alms of this study is to analyse the user's behavior, satisfaction, difficulties and selection of retrieval keywords for the use of Web-based OPAC in the College students. The methods of the questionnaire and the interview was applied to get the data and processed by using SPSSWIN 10.1. Several research results was proved the hypothesis such as differences between major subject of students in their fields. Furthermore, based on the result of this analysis, another purpose is to come up with the Improvements of functions prompting difficulties and answers to problems found in the Web OPAC, helping them to use the Web OPAC efficiently.

An Empirical Study of the Everyday Life Information Seeking Behavior of the Baby-boomers as Pre-retirees (베이비붐세대 은퇴예정자의 정보이용행태에 관한 연구)

  • This study presents the findings from research on the Everyday Life Information Seeking (ELIS) behaviors of Korean government officials in their 50s. 500 survey respondents participated and the quantitative data were analyzed through Structural Equation Model having six key concepts such as personal information environment, information-seeking attitudes, online information attitudes, barriers to information seeking, retirement expectations, and library expectations. The findings showed the important relationships between expectations of the retirement and two constructs (personal information environment and information-seeking attitudes). This study can be used as a strategic implication for library practitioners to develop their library management process in accordance to the potential and powerful evolving user group in a future aged society.

  • The purpose of this study lies in analyzing the limitations and weakness of the existing PDL and proposing the principles for the development of a user-oriented PDL. The user group of PDL that we want to develop is university students. To this end, we investigate the information seeking behavior of the sampled user group, especially, their information needs, information use patterns, and information management patterns. Based on the results, we conceptually propose the systems specifications which the university students wish to be included in the PDL.

Trends of Web-based OPAC Search Behavior via Transaction Log Analysis (트랜잭션 로그 분석을 통한 웹기반 온라인목록의 검색행태 추이 분석)

  • In this study in order to verify the overall information seeking behavior of the Web-based OPAC users, it was analyzed transaction log file for 7 years. Regarding Web-based OPAC information seeking behavior, it was studied from the perspective of information seeking strategy and information seeking failure. In search strategy, it was analyzed search type, search options, Boolean operator, length of search text, number of uses of word, number of use Web-based OPAC, number of use by time, by week day. Also, in search failure, search failure ratio, search failure ratio by search options, search failure ratio by Boolean operator were analyzed. The result of this study is expected to be utilized for OPAC system and service improvement in the future.

  • Most public libraries construct and operate their websites to provide the various user groups in local communities with internet access in Korea. But the representative public library's websites designed for children who are going to lead the next generation information based society, are unsatisfactory and don't reflect their approaches to information. The main factors of content and circumstance of usage are also extremely poor. Therefore, this research analyzed the construction of websites for children, their interface and design, search services, the contents of provincial representative public libraries amongst public libraries in korea and suggested improvement schemes.

A Study on the e-Book Service of University Library (대학도서관 전자책 서비스에 관한 연구)

  • Libraries have a variety of resources due to the endless changes of the library environment. Electronic resources have become the one of the important library resources. As an electronic resource, e-Book has emerged recently and is worth of notice to be a great resource in the libraries. This study reviews the history and special features of the e-Book. This paper analyzes the functions and problems of e-Book and changes of the library services related e-Book. The purpose of the study is to point out the problems and suggest the possible solutions of e-Book usages in the university libraries by the survey.

A Study on the Disabled' Use Behavior and Needs towards the Library Space (도서관 공간에 대한 장애인 이용행태 및 요구 분석)

  • This study identified the experiences that the disabled actually feel in the library space in the face of growing social demands for spatial functions in public libraries. This study also tried to determine the requirements for the space that disabled wanted. For the research, 15 subjects were selected for each of the five people who were blind, deaf, and handicapped with experience using the library and individual in-depth interviews were conducted for the research. The study found that the experience of the disabled in the library space differed by type of disability and generally more negative experiences were found than positive ones. Misperception about the disabled of library staff and the non-disabled were having a significant impact on the disabled's negative experience for library space. There were a wide variety of opinions on the requirements for library space and there were generally negative perceptions about the current level of library space for the Integrated library service space.
