A Case Study on the Librarian's Perception of Information Commons (정보광장에 대한 사서의 인식 사례연구)

  • This study examined librarians' perceptions of Information Commons(I.C.), user's information seeking behaviors, and new role of library in the digital ages. Interviews with 28 librarians found that the perceptions of the librarians were widely differed depending on their understandings of the nature of the space. The interview results were divided into three different categories of librarians: the librarians; 1) understanding library as a place only with academic functions, 2) library as academic place along with multi-cultural functions, and 3) library as open learning space with focus on creativity and discovery of users. The findings also indicated that all these perceptions are closely related to understanding of the role of library and its future development.

The Influence of the Library Manager's Communication Ability on Job Performance and Role-Conflict of the Library Staff (도서관 관리자의 커뮤니케이션 능력이 직원들의 주관적 직무성과와 역할갈등에 미치는 영향)

  • The library manager's communication ability can influence organizational management because the types and ways of organizational management is carried out can be determined by the manager's communication ability. In that, this study intends to examine the influence of the library manager's communication ability on job performance and role-conflict of the library staff. To do so, on top of the conceptual framework of communication and the library as an organization, this study builds theoretical underpinnings on the library manager's communication ability, job performance and role-conflict of the library staff. Using a questionnaire survey method, this study surveys 127 library staff from 8 public libraries in Seoul, statistically analyzes the response through the SPSS20 statistical package, and examines the relationship between and among the variables. Based on the analysis, a discussion on the influence of the library manager's communication ability on job performance and role-conflict of the library staff follows.

A Study of the Position and Role of the School District Library Media Director in the USA (미국 지역 교육구 학교도서관 담당관의 지위 및 역할에 관한 연구)

  • This study is about the position and role of the school district library media director in the USA in order to introduce and promote this position in Korea. It will help support the 'Master Plan for Promoting School Library: Making Good School Library' launched by the Korean Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development. For the research. the position and role of the school district library media director was researched by literature review, observation, questionnaire, and interview methods. Establishing the position of the school library media director in districts is necessary to promote school libraries in Korea. Finally, it suggests that the major of the school district library media director is library and information sciences. The school library media director should have technology knowledge, educational skills, leadership as an administrator, strong communication skills with their school librarians. advocator skill as well as have a wide knowledge in library and information sciences.

The Role Of The Library For Supporting The Virtual University (가상대학 지원을 위한 도서관의 역할)

  • This study aims to provide some rosie material for the libraries to improve its role for supporting the virtual university by recognizing the changing roles to have to support the distance education which is becoming a growing area in the coming new century due to the necessity of continuing renewal and the retaining of the information related workers. Through the study, a few conclusions were derived. (1) To support the virtual university, the library services should be directed toward the operation of the full access - philosophy and should reflect the information needs of the off-campus students. The librarians should be equipped with the ability to make use of networked resources and to provide the document delivery services together with the ability to develop the web-based user training programs. The department of library and Information Science should educate the future librarian for the purpose of supporting the virtual university. (2) A written and agreed guidelines should be established to specify the philosophy, management, facilities, resources and services to support the virtual university. And it is desirable that in the near future the department and a librarian responsible for the supporting the distance education should be established.

An Study of Operational Strategy for Special Libraries on Social Network Service (SNS) (전문도서관의 소셜네트워크서비스 운영방안 연구 - 해양과학도서관 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • This study proposes a customized SNS operational strategy for special libraries based on a case study on the Ocean Science Library (OSL) of South Korea. The study conducted an in-depth analysis on an organizational structure, manpower, contents, and promotion. The outcome of SNS operational strategy deducted from this study can be categorized into several items, including: (1) a selection of an appropriate SNS channel, which meets the objective of the operation; (2) a formal division of works for SNS operation; (3) a designation of full-time managers and an establishment of a task force team; (4) a specialization of contents according to specific subjects; (5) on/off-line promotions focused on events, which encourage participations; (6) an improvement of contents through regular log analyses; and (7) a promotion of library website access through SNS, and so on. This research also suggested the strategies for the development of SNS operation: strengthening of communication and cooperation among librarians; distribution of academic and research outcomes of the umbrella organization; enhancement of a role as a communication channel between librarians and users, and carry out a role as a 'social curator.'

A Study Analyzing Donation Cases for Establishing Library Corporate Donation Culture (도서관 기부문화 정착을 위한 기업기부 사례분석 연구)

  • Library is a social institution that satisfies the intellectual needs of the community and provides information, cultural enjoyment, and continuing education to the community. However, it is true that a library may face with difficulties in satisfying the diverse and advanced needs of its users and performing its newly acquired roles because of the limited financial resources of state and local governments. Therefore, this study proposed the introduction of corporate donations as one of the options for library funding, both for expansion of critical library infrastructure and for the internal stability of library operations. To this end, this study determined corporate donation goals, donation targets, campaign donations, the number of libraries being built and renovated, and the effects on libraries that obtained corporate donations by investigating and analyzing known corporate donation cases. The results of this study could be used by libraries hoping to attract corporate donations.
