  • According to Wayne A. Wiegand in the 1998, he research to The "Amherst Method": The Origins of the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme. Although a debate about the origins of the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme has been going on for generations, historical consensus remains elusive. This paper contributes information to the historiography on the origins of the scheme: 1) by grounding an account of Dewey's thinking as he was crafting the DDC on an analysis of a large body of sources than previous classification historians have consulted; and 2) by expanding and deepening historical understanding of the contextual forces influencing on the classification structure. Because the DDC idea as it first occurred to M. Dewey in Amherst in 1872-73 is an important in the history of library development in the world. He outlined the first draft of his decimal scheme and submitted it to the Amherst College Library Committee on 8 May 1873. This paper analysis to "Three Genetic Paper", that is 1) The Merits of the System, 2) Library Classification System, 3) Its Special Adaption to our Library.

  • This study examined the changes, development and characteristics of the cartographic materials field in LCC as a suggestion of an ideal classification scheme which is necessary for classily the cartographic materials in libraries. The main purpose this study is to suggest how to apply the examination results to the related subject field in KDC focused on the integration and subdivision of area table and developing subject subdivision table.

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristics of Cutter's Expansive Classification. The four elements about classification evaluation were applied to analyze it. Results show that first, from philosophy and religion class to literature class, the order of main classes is logical and evolutionary. Second, the notation is a pure notation including author mark. Third, the classification is expansive from first classification to seventh classification. Science classes were expanded in the second classification comparing to the first classification. From the third classification, all classes were expanded. Fourth, it was applied by the local list to indicate places emphasizing connection of geographical space.

  • Bliss stated that one of the purposes of the classification was to demonstrate that a coherent and comprehensive system, based on the logical principles of classification and consistent with the systems of science and education, may be available to services in libraries, to aid revision of long established classifications and to provide an adaptable, efficient and economical classification, notation and index. A fundamental principle is the idea of subordination each specific subject is subordinated to the appropriate general one. The full scheme followed the publication of two massive theoretical works on the organization of knowledge. Its main feature was the carefully designed maul class order. reflecting Comte principle of gradation in speciality.

  • This study aims to identify the status of the classification retrieval operation by investigating and analyzing the classification retrieval related to the books in the university libraries. The Investigation concentrated on whether the classification retrieval service is provided, Access Method and classification retrieval level. The data was collected from 97 libraries where URL access was available during the period of survey in 100 libraries selected by the systematic sampling. As a result, while $92.8\%$ of 97 libraries provided the classification retrieval service, $52.2\%$ of it enabled the access to classification retrieval service only by the classification number and $47.8\%$ by classification number and classification directory. Consequently, it was found that the retrieval environment in the libraries where the access was enabled only by classification number should be urgently improved for the activation of classification retrieval.
