The present research explores the tendency of the items that require Place Location Knowledge (PLK) of the Korean Geography subject in the College Scholastic Ability Test. The major findings are as follows. First, the geographical regions of the items are spatially skewed, especially in the Yeongnam regions, which are tested more frequently compared to the others. Second, the fact-based items more concern with regionality such as geographic indication system and regional festivals. Third, the concept-based items can be divided into physical geography and human geography and there were four items related to economic geography. Fourth, students tend to find it challenging in the items asking PLK. The difficulty varies according to the type of items. The students find concept-based items which require high-order thinking more challenging. There is also differences identified between contents. For example, the section of physical geography, especially climatology-related, were considered the most challenging followed by those of economic geography. Finally, the differences in the rate of correct answer are associated with the scale of the regions covered in the items and students experienced more difficulty in the items asking more precise scale.

The purpose of this study is, targeting 5th and 6th grades mathematically gifted elementary students, to analyze the effect of independent study project learning on self-directed learning ability and mathematical self-efficacy, and based on the results, examine the implications that independent study project learning has in special education for the gifted. In order to solve the study problems, 5th grade mathematically gifted elementary students(40) and 6th grade mathematically gifted elementary students(39) who had passed the selection criteria of D education institute for the gifted and had been receiving special education for the gifted were selected. The study results are as below. First, although self-directed learning ability had no significant difference at p<0.05, it statistically had some differences in averages between pre-test and post-test results. Second, although mathematical self-efficacy had no significant difference at p<0.05, it statistically had some differences in averages between pre-test and post-test results. Third, in the aspects of self-directed learning ability and mathematical self-efficacy, independent study project learning had a more positive effect on 5th grade mathematically gifted elementary students than 6th grade mathematically gifted elementary students. In addition, it had significant differences in 'the level of mathematical tasks', a sub-level of mathematical self-efficacy, and 'the openness of learning', 'the initiative of learning', and 'a sense of responsibility for learning', sub-levels of self-directed learning ability. These results imply that independent study project learning has a positive effect on self-directed learning ability and mathematical self-efficacy of mathematically gifted elementary students so that it could be meaningfully used as a teaching method for special education for the gifted at educational sites of independent study project learning.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the elementary pre-service teachers' preferred strategies while they solve problems which require number sense and to study a way to improve their number sense ability based on computational thinking. In a survey with 57 elementary pre-service teachers using the instrument consisting of two different number sense components, they preferred much more the rule-based strategies to the number sense-based strategies, which was consistent with the prior studies[13][14][20]. To change this situation, we present a way to improve their number sense ability by utilizing the analyzed results and the nine computational thinking components which were suggested by CSTA and ISTE(2011).

NCS (National Competency Standards) has emerged as an issue of great importance amongst Korean universities and corporations. Although previously used mostly for vocational education purposes at colleges, NCS is currently receiving an increasing amount of attention from 4-year universities as well. In the ever-evolving information economy, the basic workplace skills defined by NCS, which include soft skills such as communication skills, problem-solving skills, and interpersonal skills, have now become more important than specific technical skills. This study analyzes the correlation between the basic workplace skills of NCS with participation in Formula SAE activities, a common component of Capstone design courses across North America and Europe. Data are derived from site visits to Formula SAE competitions, competition-related documents drafted by student participants, and questionnaires administered to student participants at the Formula SAE Lincoln completion and at the Korea KSAE competition. From the study findings, we claim that the basic workplace skills of NCS are closely correlated to participation in Formula SAE activities. Through a survey designed to measure the degree to which Formula SAE activities can enhance an individual's NCS Basic Workplace Skills, we find that these activities overall improved NCS basic workplace skills averaging 4.0 points above in the Likert 5-point scale. For reference the mathematical skills, communication skills, and problem-solving skills displayed statistically significantly correlation with NCS but the remaining 7 skills did not show a statistically strong correlation with NCS comparatively.

In this study, the students' responses on the items of chemistry II in the College Scholastics Ability Test (CSAT) implemented for the past 3 years since 1999 was investigated. The number of applicants and mean score of chemistry II, average percent correct by contents and inquiry process, and the items with high and/or low percent correct are analysed and discussed. The percentage of applicants for natural science track is reduced each year. However, more than 25% of natural science track applied to chemistry II, which ranked second to biology II. The mean score of chemistry II was increased in 2001 along with those of other subjects. There is no difference in average percent correct either by contents or inquiry process. Students performed generally poor at solving test items relating to 'colligative properties of solution' such as 'boiling point elevation' or 'osmotic pressure', and very well at solving test items relating to 'reaction rates'. Educational implications are discussed.
