A Study on the Improvement of Foreign User Services in Academic Library: Focusing on the K University Library (대학도서관의 외국인 서비스 개선 방안에 대한 연구 - K대학교 도서관을 중심으로 -)

  • This study aims to suggest the ways to improve academic library's services for foreign users. For this purpose, this study analysed foreign user services of the libraries of universities which have more than 1,000 foreign students and also examined the K university library's foreign user services. And this research classified the information services for foreign users into four types, which are multilingual library homepage, multilingual notices, librarian dedicated to foreigners and multilingual user education. This study analysed the information services of a librarian dedicated to foreigners, user education for foreign students, library space for foreigners and specialized programs for foreign users and also examined the user education satisfactory survey of the K university library and conducted in-depth interview with foreign students and faculties of the K university to figure out the effect of foreign user services. As a result, this research suggests 'providing multilingual service through positioning a librarian for foreign users', 'study and research support services through customized user education', 'developing specialized service' and 'supporting extracurricular program by academic library' as the practical ways to improve academic library's services for foreign users.

A Study on Implementation of Library Course Pages (강의별학술정보페이지 구축 방안에 관한 연구)

  • Library course pages are an integrated service providing both course management information and library resources as one gateway to strengthen university libraries' information services. It is possible to associate course management system and library resources, and to provide course-specific information rather than library interface with various searching gateways. In the case of foreign university libraries, library course pages have been developed more effectively and variously for university's environment and characteristics, and have been built for all the courses in a university by system processing, not manually. In foreign libraries, there are many sophisticated, dynamic, database-driven house-developed and vendor-developed systems for library course pages than hand coded HTML pages. But in Korea, there is a lack of awareness of the importance of library course pages among librarians, and the programs of library course pages have not yet been developed. Therefore, this study is to build the model for library course pages using literature reviews and case studies. Then, this study could also lay the foundation for effective library services and the system development of library course pages.

A Study on Information Needs and Behavior for the Development of Academic Library Services (대학도서관 서비스 개발을 위한 이용자 정보요구 및 정보행위 연구)

  • This study explored the user's information needs and information behavior for the development of academic library services. The content analysis of qualitative data showed that the in-depth interview participants have six types of information needs such as 'suitability, up-to-dateness, uniqueness, reliability, practicality, and convenience' while going through societal, educational, and research-related changes. Interview participants solved their information needs by acquiring the resources necessary for each individual's task through information behaviors using information media, human resources and the places. Each participant tried to solve his/her information problem through individual efforts based on their different media and information utilization capabilities. Based on the analysis, this study presented four directions in the development of academic library services. They are an personalized information literacy service, a space to meet the characteristics of information needs, an infrastructure platform for exchanging human resources, and an accessible support service for utilizing information media.

The Influence of Space Composition of University Libraries on User Satisfaction and Continuance Intention: Application of the Servicescape (서비스스케이프를 적용한 대학도서관의 공간구성이 이용자 만족도와 지속의도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to apply the Servicescape, which is used to measure the spatial services in marketing, to the studies on university libraries, in order to identify the influence of the library spaces and facilities on the satisfaction and continuance intention of the users of university libraries. For this purpose, questionnaires and in-depth interviews were conducted for users in ten private universities located in Seoul. Servicescape factors of the libraries showed that cleanliness, comfort, aesthetics, and convenience had a significant influence. Of these, convenience turned out to have the highest level of influence upon satisfaction, followed by cleanliness, aesthetics, and comfort. Descriptive statistical analysis showed whether there were significant differences in satisfaction and continuance intention based on the differences in the characteristics of the samples. Findings show that it would be necessary to provide spaces that can accommodate the various functions of a university library; seek advancement of the services; and develop the spaces of a library in consideration of cleanliness, comfort, aesthetic, and convenience. This study introduced the concept of Servicescape for the first time in the field of library and information science. This study implies that the results assist a more detailed analysis for the Library as Place dimension of LibQUAL+, and provide a new guideline for practitioners who design library spaces.

A Study on the Wireless Internet Service of University Library (대학도서관 무선인터넷 서비스에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of the study is to suggest and measure the ways to activate the use of wireless internet services in university libraries. For this, 1 reviewed the concepts and characteristics of wireless internet and investigated both local and foreign cases on wireless internet service of university libraries, library users' usage status, and their demands. Based on the case study and survey results, I suggest the strategic consideration and active publicity of university libraries, the introduction of the services students more prefer, the development of differentiated menus from ordinary wire internet services, and the consistent financial support of the university authority.

  • The purpose of this study presents a model of the integrated online library service with LMS (Learning Management System). The new library service is called 'Library on Blackboard' which was developed and implemented by Murray State University Libraries in Murray, Kentucky, USA. This user-centered service with applied information technology has the potential to enhance the quality of the library performance in university libraries. The introduction of the Learning Management System in South Korea has a potential to enhance the education environment and promote new library services. With the emergence of new information technologies and growing popularity in online classes and distance education programs, the importance and usage of Learning Management Systems in higher education has increased.

Research on the Characteristics of Research Data-related Service in North American University Libraries: Focusing on the Hierarchical Structure of Services, Job Titles, and Job Descriptions (북미 지역 대학도서관의 연구데이터 관련 서비스 특성 연구 - 서비스 간 계층 구조와 직책 및 직책별 직무내용을 중심으로 -)

  • This study investigated research data-related services offered by North American university libraries, focusing on service names, hierarchical relationships, job titles of service managers, and job descriptions. The study analyzed the homepages of 50 university libraries and found a clear hierarchical relationship between research data-related service names, indicating a clear structure for these services. The title of 'librarian' was most commonly used for the position in charge of research data-related services, and the job content of this position was found to be quite wide. Other job titles such as 'specialist' and 'analyst' were also used for experts in various research data-related fields. The existence of these job titles was seen as a way for university libraries to strengthen the expertise of their research data-related services. Based on the findings, the authors propose a service composition system for research data-related services in domestic university libraries. This system includes 'research data service' as the highest-level service name, with 'research data management service', 'GIS service', and 'data visualization service' as sub-service names. The authors also suggest that research data-related services should be provided through collaboration between existing university librarians in the early stages of service provision, and that new recruitment of research data-related professionals could be considered gradually.

  • Academic libraries are at a turning point. Historically academic libraries were the natural destination for students, faculty, and researchers seeking information. These users came to the library by default. Academic libraries served as the repository for published information as well as the intermediary for acquiring material from the outside world. In this study, suggested are directions of academic library websites construction and current techniques related library 2.0 that could be applied digital information system of academic libraries. And discussed the recent status, problems and future directions of scholarly information service through websites supporting lecture and research prefect activities for faculties in Korean university libraries.

  • As commercialization of the Internet has brought flood of information and the proportion of electronic source in the library collection has been gradually increasing, it is highly important for the library to quickly obtain and utilize the latest information. SDI service is expected to fulfill the needs providing the latest information swiftly and accurately to the digital library users. This study seeks to analyze the current standing of practical application of the SDI service in the universities of South Korea based on surveys and make a proposal on the advancement and extension of the SDI service.

A Study on the Improvement of MyLibrary Service in Academic Libraries Using the CRM (대학도서관에서의 CRM을 이용한 MyLibrary서비스개선 연구)

  • This study tried to provide users with customized services by applying the CRM theory of the MyLibrary functions of the academic library system. The first data were collected through documentary survey and homepage survey, and case study of domestic and overseas college libraries was performed and 3 systems among academic library systems were selected to conduct a survey with their librarians and users of the academic libraries. It was found that librarians in charge of each function of services didn't much utilize information data of users created in the MyLibrary functions. As for an improvement method, it was suggested that systematic management to raise recognition on CRM and utilize it as feedback data is required in order to provide high quality services as well as customized information services to users based on data created in MyLibrary.
