The purpose of this study was to investigate the joint-use libraries from other countries and provide some directions for the joint use library of Korea. The analyses revealed that there were two types of joint-use libraries broadly. One was school/public library, and the other was academic/public library. The advantages of joint-use libraries were the hiring of professional staff, collection increase, various library programs, and the efficient use of library space. The disadvantages of joint use libraries were the problems of the joint-use library located in school, busy space, limited library collection, and the limited function of school library. Success factors for Joint use libraries were the population of community, process of formal planning, community involvement and support, written legal agreement. This study showed two types of joint-use libraries for Korea : school/public library for rural areas and academic/public library for small cities.

Efforts to establish a joint preservation facility for library materials are being discussed in the regional representative libraries recently, but this is mainly a movement in public libraries. This study aimed to provide a model for a joint preservation facility construction and management especially for the National Universities Library in Busan/Gyeongnam area. For this job, after analyzing the current situation, this study focuses on 1) estimated size of the planned facility calculated by investigating the size and equipment, operation policy, collection quantity and saturation status of participating library archives, 2) strategies for construction, proposed a joint preservation architecture construction management model such as organization and human resources, and standards for transferring materials.

The objective of this study is to analyse the current status and problems of the junior college libraries in Korea which is being placed in the inferior environment relatively and to present the improvement program against hereupon. The concept and an objective of the junior colleges were examined, the problems against an external environment through various statistics of their academic libraries were also presented. The instance academic libraries based on their number of book collection in the city of Taegu area were selected to prepare the improvement program. Information service instance which hits to the junior colleges were collected through analysing the web site of the corresponding library, and the depth interview to the corresponding junior college librarians was also executed.

1249년부터 최근까지 설립된 44개의 컬리지로 구성된 영국의 옥스포드대학교는 역대 영국 수상의 절반을 배출한 명문교로 모든 영국인들이 마음의 고향처럼 동경하는 대학교이다. 대학이 가장 자랑하는 1602년에 설립된 보들레이안 도서관은 7백여만권의 장서를 소장하고 있으며 현재 50여명의 한국 유학생과 20여명의 교환교수 및 박사후연구과정생들이 있다.

This study is to analyze factors affecting collection size by the type of materials of university libraries in Korea. The two urban-area public libraries and two rural ones that are located in the Gyungsangnam-do province were selected for this paper, and the circulation records in 2007 were collected, and both MS-excel and SPSS were used for their analysis. The collected data were categorized into their collection type, circulation frequencies, and subjects. Also the four libraries were compared and analyzed again for the purpose of comparing the characteristics of the public libraries in urban and rural areas. The number of circulated books, lent number, use factor, and the number of publication lapse year were extracted and analyzed using various types of statistical methods such as correlation coefficient and nonparametric chi-square analysis, etc. as well as descriptive ones.

Academic libraries in Korea have had more and more troubles in management due to the drastic increase in quantities and budgets for purchasing expensive international academic information resources. In this research, with a focus on the international electronic information resources, an attempt is made to overcome such difficulties in management of academic libraries in the following steps: First, the amount of budgets for purchasing resources and building collections for academic libraries is analyzed; Second, the current state of academic library consortia, both domestic and foreign, is reviewed; Third, the current administrative issues and strategic directions of domestic academic library consortia, including the KESLI Consortium of KISTI, ACE Consortium of KERIS, and Consortium of Korean Council for University Educations, are examined; and Fourth, based on the above collected information, a proposal is made to improve the collection and distribution system for international academic information resources in Korea.

The top thirty universities in 2014 by the college rankings of the Korea Joongang Daily were chosen for the samples of this study to find how much academic libraries affect the competitiveness of universities. Evaluation scores of the universities in four areas, and building size, budgets, the number of collections and personnels were also decided as the variables in this study. The influence to the universities' evaluation and rankings of their libraries through average and correlation analysis was studied. The major findings of the study are: (1) Average analysis between metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas found that there were significant differences in globalization indicators, reputation, and social advance degree. Also, (2) Correlation analysis found that library budgets and the number of personnel highly affected the university evaluations or rankings compared to the other variables.

Although university libraries run by the subject-oriented serviec systems are increasing more and more, many problems are emerging as a result of tying out the subject classification of the sources without an enough advance knowledge, consideration of reality, and the study about effective management of subject-oriented sum system. Through the research of 37 university libraries run by the system of subject-oriented service, it was proved that for the effective subject-oriented service system, the reasonable classification of the subjects, considering the form and structure of the building, the number of users on each subject and the organization of the collection, and the subject librarians, who would take charge of subject-oriented service systems are indispensable. Therefore, the subject-oriented service system to be rooted strongly, the role model of the subject-oriented service system adequate to the reality of Korean university libraries should be developed, and the efforts of the people on the spot such as acquiring enough supports and training of the subject librarians should be arranged.

Because the effort to solve space shortage in academic libraries has never been successful, the rapid development of digital technology is being considered as a panacea to revolutionize analog libraries and to open a new era for digital libraries. However, this technology is yet to be perfected. Even with the use of digital technology, we are currently still looking for more space to accommodate newly printed materials and at the same time store valuable resources that are seldomly used. In 1985, Harvard adopted the industrial high-density shelving system into their library. No other retrieving system has proven to be more successful as the Harvard model. Presently, more than 50 colleges have built over 70 high-density library storage facilities. Rice University Library Service Center (RLSC) can be examined as an example of the Harvard-model. This paper will focus on assessing the operating system and architectural requirements of the RLSC which may allow for a more efficient, economical, and fundamental resolution to the library space shortage problem.
