  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of water states (water, osmotic potential and turgor pressure) of fruit vesicle and leaf on soluble solids and organic acid contents of fruits of 'Shiranuhi' mandarin hybrid, M16 A line during the fruit maturing season in plastic house cultivation. The 'Shirauhi' grafted on 'Swingle citrumelo', strong strength of rootstock, produced fruit with lower soluble solids and organic acid content than 'Trifoliate' orange rootstock. The fruits vesicle water potential and turgor pressure measured before dawn in 'Swingle citrumelo' were higher tendency than the 'Trifoliate' orange, but osmotic potential values were lower than the 'Trifoliate' orange. The changes of leaf water potential were very similar to the fruit. The results suggest that in the 'Shirauhi' fruits grafted on two rootstocks changes of soluble solids and organic acid content of the fruit were influenced by the leaf water potential and the osmotic potential of the fruit vesicles, which might be caused by the difference of root distribution between two rootstocks.

  • Growth response of 'Sambokkul' watermelon grafted onto different rootstocks including 4 $Citrullus$ rootstocks and 3 other cucurbitaceous rootstocks was evaluated at two different temperature regimes. Significant reduction in plant growth rate was observed in plants grown at low temperatures (LT) as compared to those grown at normal or optimal temperatures. Relative growth reduction were 40~47% for vine length, 39~51% for total leaf area, 38~59% for shoot fresh weight, and 57~87% for plant dry weight, respectively. Watermelon rootstock PI 482322 showed comparable plant growth as the most popular rootstock 'Shintozwa' even at LT. 'Sambokkul' watermelon grafted onto watermelon hybrids, 'PI 271969 ${\times}$ PI 296341' and 'PI 271769 ${\times}$ Calhoun Gray', showed comparable plant growth as 'FR Dantos' bottle gourd rootstock. Index of growth ability at LT, which was calculated on the basis of reduced rate of vine length, dry weight and leaf area, was significantly high in $C.$ $martinezii$, 'Shintozwa', PI 482322, and 'PI 271769 ${\times}$ PI 296341' rootstocks (50% or higher) and low in own-rooted 'Sambokkul' or in watermelon plants on 'Knight' rootstock. Watermelon hybrids, 'PI 271969 ${\times}$ PI 296341' and 'PI 271769 ${\times}$ Calhoun Gray', showed better or at least comparable growth at low temperatures as compared to 'FR Dantos', confirming the feasibility of using watermelon rootstocks even in low temperature conditions.

  • Wilt damage on tomato plants caused by Ralstonia solanacearum has been increased as the areas of tomato cultivation increased during the warm seasons. Also, the tomato rootstocks used to prevent the disease occurrence are not effective in the highly prevailing regions. Therefore, bacterial wilt resistant eggplant rootstock EG203, collected from AVRDC, was tested for its effect to deter the Ralstonia solanacearum wilt disease in the greenhouses at Buyeo Tomato Experiment Station from 2003 to 2005, and at Gumi, Kyungpook province from 2009-2011. Planting of eggplant rootstock EG203 should be done three weeks before the planting of tomato scions so that they can have similar stem diameter (2.5-3.0 mm) and can be easily grafted. Both insertion and inarching grafting showed 93-96% success rates. In the greenhouse tests at Buyeo Tomato Experiment Station from 2003 to 2005, eggplant rootstock EG203-grafted tomatoes showed the disease occurrence of 4.3%. On the other hand, non-grafted or other commercial rootstock-grafted tomatoes showed disease occurrence of 58.0% and 25.0-36.7%, respectively. In the greenhouse tests at Gumi, Kyungpook province in 2009, the disease occurrence on the EG203-grafted and non-grafted tomatoes was 2-5% and 20-80%, respectively. In 2010, at Gumi, Kyungpook province, when the wilt disease occurred slightly, the tomatoes grafted with tomato rootstocks B-blocking and Chung-gang, and eggplant rootstock EG203 showed similar disease severities, but EG203-grafted tomatoes formed lately cluster, resulting in the reduction of yield compared to tomato-grafted tomatoes. In 2011, at Gumi, Kyungpook province, when the wilt disease occurred severely, the tomato rootstocks 'B-blocking' and Chung-gang and eggplant rootstock EG203-grafted tomatoes showed disease occurrences of 60-85% and 0-1%, respectively. Therefore, it was concluded that tomato rootstocks 'B-blocking' and 'Chung-gang' are more useful in the areas contaminated with low levels of pathogen and eggplant rootstock EG203 is more useful in the areas contaminated with high levels of pathogen.

  • Six commercial rootstock varieties were tested for resistance to bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum) by dipping the roots of seedlings in the bacterial suspension at seedling stage. 'Shincheonggang' and 'B-Blocking' ranked top and second in resistance to bacterial wilt, respectively. For disease index of the grafted plants, 'Dotaerang' grafted onto 'Shincheonggang' was the least, followed by 'Ultra', 'Fighting', 'B-Blocking', 'Special', and 'Connection' grafts. Thus, disease development on the grafted plants was correlated with resistance of rootstocks. The effect of rootstocks on horticultural characteristics including days to flower of scion was minimum or negligible. In correlation between horticultural characteristics of rootstocks and scions grafted thereon, statistically significant negative correlation was observed in days to flower and fruit height but no significant correlation was observed in yield per plant, fruit diameter and soluble solid content in the fruits. Thus, selection of resistant rootstock varieties that support the growth and yield of scion well is necessary for effective control of the disease and yield increase.

  • This work was conducted to investigate the important rooting factors through comparative analysis of a physiological differentiation after layering treatment using four apple rootstocks of different rooting abilities; M.26, M.9, O.3, and Mo.84. Mo.84 showed the highest rooting rate in from rootstocks, while O.3 was the lowest. Mo.84 also found to have the highest indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) content, although the fluctuation of IAA contents was not consistent with layering treatment. In contrast, abscisic acid (ABA) content of Mo.84 which showed highest rooting was lowest among rootstocks regardless of layering treatment. And ABA contents of all rootstocks were decreased after layering treatment than before layering treatment. O.3 which showed poor rooting rate revealed lowest in boron content. Carbohydrate/nitrogen (C/N) ratio of Mo.84 was the highest in all rootstocks. Therefor, we assumed that he IAA contents in layering treated rootstocks were not seemed to be a major rooting factor, but the changes in ABA contents and boron levels limit rooting in dwarf apple rootstocks.

  • The effect of different exposed length of M.9 rootstock on growth and yield was tested in the new apple cultivars. The 'Seohong', 'Summer Dream', and 'Hongguem' grafted on M.9 rootstock were planted in March 2010. The trees were planted in such a way that the exposed length of the rootstock to be 10, 20 and 30 cm. The result showed that as decreasing exposure length, TCA of 'Seohong', 'Summer Dream', and 'Hongguem' was increased between $3^{rd}$ and $6^{th}$ year after planting. The TCA of 20 cm and 30 cm exposure length showed respectively 70% and 60% in 'Seohong', 88% and 66% in 'Summer Dream', and 55% and 41% in 'Hongguem' of the TCA with 10 cm exposure length on 6-year-old trees. Tree height, canopy width, shoot length and terminal shoot length were also increased according to decreased exposure length in 6-year-old trees. The cumulative yield of three cultivars was higher in the tree with a lower exposure length between $4^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ year after planting. The cumulative yield of 20 cm and 30 cm exposure length showed respectively 77% and 63% in 'Seohong', 85% and 76% in 'Summer Dream', and 73% and 58% in 'Hongguem' of the cumulative yield with 10 cm exposure length in 6-year-old trees. Considering tree growth and yield, the optimum exposure length of M.9 was 10 cm for 'Seohong', 'Summer Dream' and 'Hongguem'.

  • Diseases occurrence of hydroponic culture was less than that of soil culture, especially gummy stem blight, which was 39.9-53.3% of infection rate at soil culture, was not almost observed at hydroponic culture. Development of fermented fruit was higher at Shintozoa, Hongtozoa and self-rooting seedling in order at soil cultured but critically dropped at hydroponic culture without rootstock sort. Therefore proper moisture management at root zone can decrease the development of fermented fruit.

  • Leaf damage by apple leafminer, Lyonetia prunifoliella, was surveyed on Fuji apple orchards with seedling rootstock from 1992 to 2001 and with M.9 rootstock from 1999 to 2001. The damage was negligible in apple orchards with seedling rootstock as 0.15% in 1992 and 0.06% in 1993. However it sharply increased to more than 3.39% since 1994, reaching at peak damage of 6.28% to 7.78% in 1996 to 1998. Damages on apple orchards with M.9 rootstock from 1999 to 2001 were higher as 6.09% to 15.3%, compared with those with seedling rootstock in the same years. In seedling rootstock apple, the damage was highest on september but in M.9 rootstock apple, the difference was not significant. Leaf damage showed no differences between cultivars including 4 Korean cultivars and Fuji. These results may explain that increase of M.9 rootstock apple orchards is responsible for the recent outbreak of the leafminer in Korea.

  • Leaf chlorophyll fluorescence capable to estimate $CO_2$ assimilation was compared among three citrus rookstocks: trifoliate orange (Poncitrus trifoliate L.), 'Flying Dragon' (Poncitrus trifoliate L. var. monstrosa) and citromelo (Poncitrus trifoliate L.${\times}$Citrus paradisi), as well as among satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu cv. Nichinan No.1) grafted on the 3 rootstocks. Citromelo, the most vigorous rootstock; and 'trifoliate orange'; the most common cultivar and moderate rootstocks gave the same potential and actual quantum yields, whereas 'Flying Dragon' (very dwarf) had lower values due to a higher Fo and Fs for fluorescence obtained from dark-adapted and light-adapted leaves, respectively. These findings show that the absorbed photon energy was dissipated more as fluorescence from the antena chlorophyll in 'Flying Dragon' than trifoliate orange or 'swingle' citrimelo. The satsuma mandarins grafted on these rootstocks did not, however, show the differences observed in the rootstocks by having all the same potential and actual quantum yields. It is suggested that the rootsocks do not potentially or actually electron transport in the Photosystem II (PS II) of satsuma mandarin grafted on the 3 rootstocks.
