From the seismic network data of the Korea Institute of Geology, Mining & Materials during 1995-1996, we derived a composite fault-plane solution of the microearthquakes occurred in the Yangsan fault area. The composite fault-plane solution of nine events shows the orientation of fault 15 ± 3°in strike, 60 ± 8°in dip and 140°in rake or 128 ± 3°in strike, 56 ± 8°in dip and 37°in rake. The compressional axis of the stress field trends ENE to WSW, and this field suggests strike-slip motion with thrust component. The result is consistent with the 1996 Yeong-weol event and the stress field in and around the Korean Peninsula, previously reported.
This paper describes the internal structures and K-Ar ages of fault gouges collected from the Dongnae fault zone. This fault zone is internally zoned and occurs in the multiple fault cores. A fault core consists of thin gouge and narrow cataclastic zones that are bounded by a much thicker damage zone. Intensity of deformation and alteration increases from damage zone through cataclastic zone to gouge zone. It is thought that cataclasis of brittle deformation was the dominant strain-accomodation mechanism in the early stage of deformation to form the gouge zone and that crushed materials in the regions of maximum localization of fault slip subsequently moved by cataclastic flow. Deformation mechanism drastically changed from brittle processes to fluid-assisted flow along the gouge zone as the high porosity and permeability of pulverzied materials during faulting facilitated the influx of the hydrothermal fluids. Subsequently, the fluids reacted with gouge materials to form clay minerals. Fracturing and alteration could have repeatedly taken place in the gouge zone by elevated fluid pressures generated from the reduction of pore volume due to the formation of clay minerals and precipitation of other materials. XRD analysis revealed that the most common clay minerals of the gouge zones are illite and smectite with minor zeolite and kaolinite. Most of illites are composed of 1Md polytype, indicating the products of hydrothermal alteration. The major activities of the Dongnae fault can be divided into two periods based upon K-Ar age data of the fault gouges : 51.4∼57.5Ma and 40.3∼43.6Ma. Judging from the enviromental condition of clay mineral formation, it is inferred that the hydrothermal alteration of older period occured at higher temperature than that of younger period.
Recently developed illite-age-analysis(IAA) approach was applied to determine the fault-reactivated events for the Inje fault that cut through Precambrian biotite granitic gneiss with NNE-SSW trend in the middle of Korean peninsula. Three distinct fault-reactivated events of shallow crustal regime were recognized using the combined approach of optimized illite-polytype quantification and K-Ar age-dating of clay fractions separated from 4 fault clay samples: $87.0{\pm}0.12Ma$, $65.5{\pm}0.05$ and $66.6{\pm}1.38Ma$, $45.6{\pm}0.15Ma$, respectively. As well, $2M_1$ illite ages of 193~196 Ma and $254.3{\pm}6.96Ma$ were discernible, which may be related to the fault-activated time in the relatively deep crust. The study results suggest that the Inje fault would be firstly formed at $254.3^{\circ}$${\ae}6.96Ma$ and sporadically reactivated in shallow regime since about 87 Ma. These reactivation events in shallow regime might be due to the Bulguksa orogeny that would be strongly influenced in Korean peninsula at that time.
Tectonic movements in the Mesozoic were significant events to structural evolution in East China, so far as to West Pacific area. Typical Mesozoic structures were formed and outcropped in Yanshanian mountain area in which Yanshanian movement was named. It is generally considered that the most of outcropping structures in this area were formed in Yanshanian movement. But general studies indicated recently that more than half of the folds were formed in Yanshanian movement. But general studies indicated recently that more than half of the folds were formed and most of fault were in great reverse activity during Indosinian movement in Late-Triassic epoch. The tectonic dynamics setting of Indosinian move ment is a N-S compressive stress system originated by northward movement of Sino-Korean massif and its collison with Xingan-Mongolia fold zone. A series of closed folds (nearly E-W axial trace)and some overturned folds were formed in Indosinian movement and incoaxially superposed by Yanshanian deformation, Faulting characteristcs in the area were thrust faulting caused by compressive stress in Indosinian movement, some of which appear to be positive structural inversion, and oblique-thrust caused by compressive-shear in Yanshanian movement.
Focal mechanisms were analyzed for the seven earthquakes which occurred in the southwestern part of the Korea Peninsula from 2001 to 2005. Grid searches are performed to fit distributions of P-wave first-motion polarities and SH/P amplitude ratios for each event. The focal mechanism solutions imply that most of the events have strike-slip sense including partially thrust component. The compressional axes of the solutions are predominantly ENE-WSW or NE-SW indirections. This result is similar to the directions of the principal compressional axes for major earthquakes occurred around the Korea Peninsula.
Focal mechanism solutions in the southwestern region of the Korean Peninsula ($34^{\circ}N-36^{\circ}N$, $126^{\circ}E-128^{\circ}E$) were obtained from the analysis of the recent 22 earthquakes ($M{\geq}2.0$) occurred from January, 2005 to March, 2011. The spatial differences between the epicenters recalculated by this study and those by KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) and KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) are less than $0.05^{\circ}$, indicating a small deviation. However, they become a little bit larger in the coastal area due to a biased arrangement of seismic stations. Redetermined depths of hypocenters show a difference less than 12.7 km by comparison with the depth data announced by KIGAM. Most epicenters in inland area are located closely to the lineaments. Fault plane solutions were obtained from the analysis of P and SH wave polarities, and SH/P amplitude ratios. They show strike-slip faulting or strike-slip faulting with reverse components dominantly. The P-axes trends are mainly ENE-WSW or E-W directions. The direction of fault plane and auxiliary plane with 'NNE-SSW and WNW-ESE' or 'NE-SW and NW-SE' are dominant and almost parallel to the general trends of lineaments in the study area.
The Danyang area consists of the thrust and folded sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic and Mesozoic Era. The area is bounded by major tectonic units which are the Gagdong Thrust to the west and the Okdong Fault to the east. According to the structural analyses, the area is affected by polyphase deformation. This study establishes deformational sequence in the area. Mylonite zone along the Okdong Fault corresponds to the first generation of structures ($D_1$). $D_1$-structures are discrete shear zone in the Jangsan Formation and bedding parallel extensional deformation in the Cambro-Ordovician sequences. $D_2$-structures were formed prior to the sedimentation of the Jurassic Bansong Group, which are the NW-trending fold and linear structures. After sedimentation of the Bansong Group, the area is strongly affected by the Daebo Orogeny which produces NE-trending thrusts, folds and linear structures. Earlier structures were tightened and rotated toward NE. Some thrust faults did not propagate into the Bansong Group. It is suggested either the Bansong Group acted as a decoupling horizon or rest on unconformably on the thrust faults. The area is weakly affected by $D_4$-event of which structures are E-W trending folds and faults. The Jugryeong Fault clearly cut the earlier folds and thrust faults. The rocks within the fault zone were sliced and rotated during the strike-slip movements. Block rotation and transpressional features can be commonly observed.
The Korean historical 1iteratures describe that great eaathquakes with destructive damages occurred mainly in Kyongju-Ulsan areas during the period of 1 to 8 century and 16 to 17 century. It seems that the Ulsan fault system shows a little curved ttend with N-S strike in the southern part and diverges into three directions from the mid-northern lart of the fault. The dominant trends of the lineaments are NNE-SSW, NE-SW and NS directions. Trench excavation in the mid-northern part of the Ulsan fault shows thrust facies cutting slope deposit containing a compacted laminar structure whose origin may due to severe cryogenic activities of the last cold period(ahout 25OOO B.P.). Detailed observation of the facies gives some evidences related to two earthquake episodes of thrust components along the Ulsan fault system. Fault outcrop and trench study suggest that Ulsan fault seems to he one of the active fault which has reworked several times even in the late Quaternary.
The Gilan area in the central-northern part of Uiseong Block of Cretaceous Gyeongsang Basin is composed of Precambrian metamorphic rocks, Triassic Cheongsong granite, Early Cretaceous Hayans Group, and Late Cretaceous-Paleocene igneous rocks. In this area, the faults of various directions are developed: Oksan fault of $NS{\sim}NNW$ trend, Gilan fault of NW trend, Hwanghaksan fault of WNW trend, and Imbongsan fault of EW trend. Several fracture sets with various geometric indicators, which determine their relative timing (sequence and coexistence relationships) and shear sense, we well observed in the Cheongsong granite, the basement of Gyeongsang Basin. The aim of this study is to determine the development sequence of extension fractures and the movement sense of shear fractures in the Gitan area on the basis of detailed analysis of their geometric indicators (connection, termination, intersection patterns, and cross-cutting relations). This study suggests that the fracture system of the Gilan area was formed at least through seven different fracturing events, named as Pre-Dn to Dn +5 phases. The orientations of fracture sets show (W) NW, NNW, NNE, EW, NE in descending order of frequency. The orientation and frequency patterns are concordant with those of faults around and in the Gilan area on a geological map scale. The development sequence and movement sense of fracture sets are summarized as follows. (1) Pre-Dn phase: extension fracturing event of $NS{\sim}NNW$ and/or $WNW{\sim}ENE$ trend. The joint sets of $NS{\sim}NNW$ trend and of $WNW{\sim}ENE$ trend underwent the reactivation histories of sinistral ${\rightarrow}$dextral${\rightarrow}$sinistral shearing and of (dextral${\rightarrow}$) sinistral shearing with the change of stress field afterward, respectively. (2) Dn phase: that of NW trend. The joint set experienced the reactivations of sinistral${\rightarrow}$dextral shearing. (3) Dn + 1 phase: that of $NNE{\sim}NE$ trend. The joint set was reactivated as a sinistral shear fracture afterward. (4) Dn +2 phase: that of $ENE{\sim}EW$ trend. (5) Dn +3 phase: that of $WNW{\sim}NW$ trend. (6) Dn+4 phase: that of NNW trend. The joint set underwent a dextral shearing after this. (7) The last Dn +5 phase: that of NNE trend.

We acquired and interpreted more than 650 km of high-resolution seismic reflection profiles in the Hupo Basin, offshore east coast of Korea at $37^{\circ}N$ in the East Sea (Japan Sea) to image shallow and basement deformation. The seismic profiles reveal that the main depocenter of the Hupo Basin in the study area is bounded by the large offset Hupo Fault on the east and an antithetic fault on the west; however, the antithetic fault is much smaller both in horizontal extension and in vertical displacement than the Hupo Fault. Sediment infill in the Hupo Basin consists of syn-rift (late Oligocene. early Miocene) and post-rift (middle Miocene.Holocene) units. The Hupo Fault and other faults newly defined in the Hupo Basin strike dominantly north and show a sense of normal displacement. Considering that the East Sea has been subjected to compression since the middle Miocene, we interpret that these normal faults were created during continental rifting in late Oligocene to early Miocene times. We suggest that the current ENE direction of maximum principal compressive stress observed in and around the Korean peninsula associated with the motion of the Amurian Plate induces the faults in the Hupo Basin to have reverse and right-lateral, strike-slip motion, when reactivated. A recent earthquake positioned on the Hupo Fault indicates that in the study area and possibly further in the eastern Korean margin, earthquakes would occur on the faults created during continental rifting in the Tertiary.
