  • Sealants are an important element of modern architecture and serve as a building protection against weathering by providing barriers against ingress of moisture, air, and other materials. Exposure to a variety of environments often reduces lifespan due to changes in physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics, and UV, humidity, and temperature expansion are important issues that are directly related to durability. In this study, a combined deterioration test chamber was developed to simulate the environment of the open air as an instrument for verifying the durability of structural sealing materials indoors. In order to replicate special weather conditions, such as yellow dust, acid rain, and contamination by microorganisms, it was deemed impossible to replicate the outdoor environment by 100 %, and the results of the results of the results of the external exposure test of the structural sealant and the combined deterioration testing device. As a result of the displacement test of the outdoor exposure test, it was determined that the sealant was breaking apart and that it would be smooth, and the displacement would be up to three times greater than the initial material value of 1 year. The displacement test results of the combined deterioration test device show the tendency to deteriorate, decreasing the elasticity and tensile characteristics. In the case of denatured silicon, the current 400 cycles have been completed to confirm 12 months of degradation of the external exposure. The deformation of the test specimen cannot be verified with the naked eye, so it is considered that the conditions of the specimen are more stable than the silicon sealant. As a result of the outdoor exposure test, if the combined deterioration test device is structured and proposed in the relevant guidance or specification, the anticipated lifespan of 12 months in the actual use environment can be verified indoors and below 3 months later, economically.

  • The scaffolding system, which is a construction workbench of the cargo containment for a membrane LNG carrier, is a large truss structure composed of various members. To shorten the installation period and process of the scaffolding system, it is effective to enlarge the mounting unit from the existing two stages to eight stages. Owing to the increase in lifting load according to the large size of the module, the stresses around the pin and hole will be increased significantly. In this study, a tensile strength test and contact stress analysis were performed to confirm the structural safety. The relatively large hole deformation was observed visually near the average load generated in the vertical pipe at the top through tensile strength tests. A contact stress calculation confirmed the stress distribution around the hole. The contact problem was dealt with in terms of the Herzian contact stress. The possibility of 8-stage loading was examined by comparing the yield strength and contact stresses of failure critical locations. As a result, the 8-stage loading method of the existing scaffolding material was inadequate, and a new loading method with proper safety is proposed.

  • Nowadays, one of the most interested area of automobile industry is the production of vehicle which has collision safety and ability to produce less amount of $CO_2$. The achievement of such a dual performance is done by choosing the materials like dual phase steel, ferrite bainite steel, etc. These steels have been used in automotive chassis and body parts, and also used to be formed by hole flanging to meet the goal of strength and design requirement. The formability of sheet material was experimented by hole expansion test and the judgement relies on human eye and his experience. This manual judgement involves many errors and large deviation. This paper develops the automatic crack recognition system which finds a crack based on CCD image to complement the problem of the current method depending on human's sense.

  • This paper is concerned with mechanical properties of unidirectional laminate $[(0^{\circ})_{8T},\;(90^{\circ})_{8T}]$, composed of angle plies $[({\pm}15^{\circ})_{2S},\;({\pm}30^{\circ})_{2S},\;({\pm}45^{\circ})_{2S},\;({\pm}60^{\circ})_{2S},\;({\pm}75^{\circ})_{2S}$ and laminate $[(9^{\circ}/90^{\circ})_{2S},\;(90^{\circ}/{\pm}45^{\circ}/0^{\circ})_S,\;({\pm}45^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/{\pm}90^{\circ})_S,\;({\pm}45^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/0^{\circ})_S,\;(0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}/{\pm}45^{\circ})_S,\;(90^{\circ}/0^{\circ}/{\pm}45^{\circ})_S]$ under the condition of uniform strain tension. Also, experimental investigation was conducted $[10]_{8T}$, off-axis tensile test for intralaminar shear characterization. The experimental data on the failure criterion of tensor polynomial were compared with those from the classical laminate theory. Acoustic Emission experiments have been carried out to investigate the changes of the amplitude distributions of Acoustic Emission monitored during failure of tensile tests on Carbon/Epoxy composites.

  • Abstract The effects of the hole size and the specimen width on the fracture behavior of several fabric composite plates are experimentally investigated in tension. Tests are performed on plain woven glass/ epoxy, plain woven carbon/epoxy and satin woven glass/polyester specimens with a circular hole. It is shown in this paper that the characteristic length according to the point stress criterion depends on the hole size and the specimen width. An excellent agreement is found between the experimental results and the analytical predictions of the modified failure criterion. The notched strength increase with an increase in the damage ratio, which is explained by a stress relaxation due to the formation of damage zone. When the unstable fracture occurred, the critical crack length equivalent for the damage zone is about twice the characteristic length. The critical energy release rate $G_c$ is independent of hole size for the same specimen width. The variation of $G_c$ according to the material system, fiber volume fraction and specimen width relates to the notch sensitivity factor. $G_c$ increases with a decrease in the notch sensitivity factor, which can be explained by a stress relaxation due to the increase of damage zone.

  • An automatic mooring system for a ship consists of a vacuum suction pad and a mechanical part, enabling quick and safe mooring of a ship. In the development of a mooring system, the design of a vacuum suction pad is a key to secure enough mooring forces and achieve stable operation of a mooring system. In the vacuum suction pad, properly designing its rubber seal determines the performance of the suction pad. Therefore, it is necessary to appropriately design the rubber seal for maintaining a high-vacuum condition inside the pad as well as achieving its mechanical robustness for long-time use. Finite element analysis for the design of the rubber seal requires the use of an appropriate strain energy function model to accurately simulate mechanical behavior of the rubber seal material. In this study, we conducted simple uniaxial tensile testing of Chloroprene Rubber (CR) to explore the strain energy function model best-fitted to its experimentally measured engineering strain-stress curves depending on various temperature environments. This study elucidates the temperature-dependent mechanical behaviors of CR and will be foundational to design rubber seal for an automatic mooring system under various temperature conditions.

  • We have prepared PP/Ba-ferrite composite fabrics by a melt-blown spinning method and investigated the relationship between the properties of PP/Ba-ferrite composite fabrics and melt-blown processing factors. A PP composite containing Ba-ferrite as a magnetic particulate filler was prepared in the form of pellet from PP resin and Ba-ferrite powder by melt compounding using a single extruder. Screw turning force (rpm), DCD (die-to-collector distance), and Ba-ferrite content were changed. We measured diameters of fiber, mechanical, thermal, and magnetic properties for the composited PP fabrics. The elongation was increased and a fiber diameter and tensile strength were decreased as the spinning distance increased or screw turning force decreased. The crystallinity was increased with increasing spinning distance according to XRD. It was assumed that the orientation of crystalline domain in the neat PP without ferrite was increased by drawing in mechanical direction, however, the orientation in the PP composite was decreased according to XRD analysis. We measured a magnetic property of PP nonwoven fabric containing Ba-ferrite powder. A coercive force, maximum magnetization, and residual magnetization are reduced with the spinning distance. According to the result of TGA measurement, the heat resistance was increased with the Ba-ferrite powder content and with decreasing the spinning distance.

  • Reinforcing bar splices are inevitable in reinforced concrete structure. In these days, there are three main types of splices used in reinforced concrete construction site - lapped splice, mechanical splice and welded splice. Low cost, practicality in construction site, less time consuming and high performance make gas pressure welding become a favorable splice method. However, reinforcing bar splice experiences thermal loading history during the welding procedure. This may lead to the presence of residual stress in the vicinity of the splice which affects the fatigue life of the reinforcing bar. Therefore, residual stress analysis and tensile test of the gas pressure welded splice are carried out in order to verify the load bearing capacity of the gas pressure welded splice. The reinforcing bar used in this work is SD400, which is manufactured in accordance with KS D 3504. The results show that the residual stresses in welded splice is relatively small, thus not affecting the performance of the reinforcing bar. Moreover, the strength of the gas pressure welded splice is high enough for the development of yielding in the bar. As such, the reinforcing bar with gas pressure welded splice has enough capacity to behave as continuous bar.

  • The reliability problems of flip chip packages subjected to temperature change during the packaging process mainly occur due to mismatches in the coefficients of thermal expansion as well as features with time-dependent material properties. Resin molding compounds like glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites used as the dielectric layer in printed circuit boards (PCB) strongly exhibit viscoelastic behavior, which causes their Young's moduli to not only be temperature-dependent but also time-dependent. In this study, the stress relaxation and creep tests were used to characterize the viscoelastic properties of the glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite. Using the viscoelastic properties, finite element analysis (FEA) was employed to simulate thermal loading in the pre-baking process and predict thermal warpage. Furthermore, the effect of viscoelastic features for the major polymeric material on the dielectric layer in the PCB (the glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite) was investigated using FEA.

  • The development of reinforcing steel is required in reinforced concrete structures. The standard hooks that have been widely used for the tensile development in the beam-column joints tend to create difficulties of construction such as steel congestion as the member cross sections are becoming smaller due to the use of higher strength concrete and higher grade steel. Using the reinforcing bars with end mechanical anchoring device (headed reinforcement) provides potential economies in construction such as reduction in development lengths, simplified details, and improved responses to cyclic loadings. In this paper, the pullout strengths and behaviors of the headed reinforcement were experimentally studied. In 33 pullout tests performed using D25 deformed reinforcing bars, the test parameters were embedment depth, edge distance, head size, and the use of transverse reinforcement. The pullout strengths determined from tests closely agreed with the pullout strengths predicted using the CCD method. The pullout strengths increased with increasing embedment depths nd edge distances. The strengths tend to increase with the use of larger heads. From the experimental program where the effect of the transverse reinforcement was examined, a modification factor to the CCD was suggested to represent the effect of such reinforcement that is installed across the concrete failure plane on the pullout strengths.
