The Unsupervised Learning-based Language Modeling of Word Comprehension in Korean

  • We are to build an unsupervised machine learning-based language model which can estimate the amount of information that are in need to process words consisting of subword-level morphemes and syllables. We are then to investigate whether the reading times of words reflecting their morphemic and syllabic structures are predicted by an information-theoretic measure such as surprisal. Specifically, the proposed Morfessor-based unsupervised machine learning model is first to be trained on the large dataset of sentences on Sejong Corpus and is then to be applied to estimate the information-theoretic measure on each word in the test data of Korean words. The reading times of the words in the test data are to be recruited from Korean Lexicon Project (KLP) Database. A comparison between the information-theoretic measures of the words in point and the corresponding reading times by using a linear mixed effect model reveals a reliable correlation between surprisal and reading time. We conclude that surprisal is positively related to the processing effort (i.e. reading time), confirming the surprisal hypothesis.

The Effect of Color Filter on the Reading Ability in Teenager with Irlen-Syndrome (얼렌증후군에서 컬러필터가 읽기능력에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of improving read speed with color filter or without color filter to improve reading disorder of teenager who were diagnosed as Meares-Irlen syndrome through survey inspection with Meares-Irlen syndrome visual stress (MISViS) score. Methods: MISViS subjects were selected from screening survey MISViS results given above 2.13 in the clinical criteria scores (MISViS score). Reading speed were measured quickly and efficiently the rate of reading via test in which randomly ordered common words are read aloud during a minute. Each of the subjects were worn a filter of the lowest concentration in each color filter group composed of 15 groups. Results: MISViS score of MISViS group and control group were 2.57 and 0.66, respectively. Results of reading speed with filter and without filter in MISViS group were $102.27{\pm}27.86$ wpm and $118.87{\pm}26.99$ wpm (p=0.001), respectively, as well as were $132.93{\pm}6.88$ wpm and $133.43{\pm}6.64$ wpm (p=0.131) in the normal group. Associated with error changes with filter and without filter between two groups, skipping in MISViS Group were from $0.25{\pm}0.62$ times to 0 times (p=0.191), Errors were from $1.83{\pm}1.69$ times to $0.17{\pm}0.38$ times (p = 0.004) and, repetitions were 0. skipping in control group were 0 times, errors were from $0.21{\pm}0.43$ times to $0.07{\pm}0.27$ times (p=0.336) and, repetitions were from $0.14{\pm}0.36$ times to 0 (p=0.165). The filter of blue series chosen in MISViS group had higher percentage (40%), whereas, subjects in normal group were more likely to prefer the filter of gray color (29%). Conclusions: This study showed that MISViS score have been used as a significant diagnosis for Irlen syndrome screening. This study found that wearing suitable color filter for MISViS patients were useful to improve learning with regard to reading. Unique color filter selection for MISViS subjects must be carefully considered since fit color filter are different personally.

  • Purpose : To evaluate the language areas activated by fMRI during different reading tasks and to assess the difference of activated areas according to each reading task. Materials and Methods : Functional maps of the language area were obtained during three reading tasks(Korean consonant letter, pseudoword, and word) in nine right-handed volunteers(7 males 2 females). MR examinations were performed at 1.5T scanner with EPI BOLD technique(gradient echo shot EPI, TR/TE 3000/60, flip angle $90^{\circ}$, matrix $64{\times}64$, 5mm thickness, no slice gap). Each task consisted of three resting periods and two activation periods and each period lasted 30 seconds. We used SPM program for the postprocessing of images and signification level was set at p<0.01. Activated areas were topographically analyzed in each stimulus. Results : Significant activated signals were demonstrated in all volunteers. Activated signals were seen in the frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital lobes during reading tasks and they were lateralized to the left hemisphere except occipital lobe. Letter and pseudoword produced stronger activated signals than word, and the activated signals were more lateralized to the left hemisphere in pseudoword reading than in letter reading. Conclusion : Activated signals were induced in the language areas by reading task of letter or wordform. Greater activation of language areas was induced when letter or pseudowords were presented than familiar words.

Parafoveal Preview Effects on Semantic Relatedness in Eye Movement Tracking (안구운동 추적을 통해 살펴본 중심와주변 정보의 의미적 관련 정도에 따른 미리보기 효과)

  • In the process of reading, readers can process information not only within the fixated region, known as the fovea, but also in the parafoveal region to the right of the fovea. While the parafoveal semantic preview effect has been confirmed in eye-tracking experiments using boundary techniques, research on how the parafoveal preview effects differ depending on the degree of semantic relatedness is still limited. This study investigates the parafoveal preview effects as a function of semantic relatedness with the target word. The experiment utilized Korean-Chinese bilinguals and presented mixed-language sentences as experimental stimuli. Four parafoveal preview conditions were applied to the target words in each sentence: (1) Korean identical condition, where the parafoveal word was the same as the target word (e.g., "나라," meaning "country" in English), (2) Chinese synonymous condition, where the parafoveal word had the same meaning as the target word (e.g., "国家," also meaning "country" in English), (3) Chinese semantically related condition, where the parafoveal word was semantically related to the target word (e.g., "政权," meaning "political power" in English), and (4) Chinese unrelated condition, where the parafoveal word was semantically unrelated to the target word (e.g., "围裙," meaning "apron" in English). The study explored the parafoveal preview effect in terms of the degree of semantic association with the target word. We found the most pronounced preview effect in conditions where the preview and the target word shared the same meaning, and we also observed preview effects in conditions where the semantic relatedness with the target word was relatively weak. This study suggests that the degree of semantic relatedness between the parafoveal preview word and the target word can influence readers' reading processes. It contributes to a better understanding of readers' eye movements and comprehension processes, with potential implications for the development of effective reading strategies and educational methods.

  • 문장을 이해하기 위해서는 각 단어를 이해한 후에 이 단어들이 문장 내에서 어떠한 기능을 담당하고 있는지 그 구조를 파악해야 한다. 한국어 정보 처리에 있어서 명칭성 실어증 환자는 어떠한 방식으로 이러한 문장 구조를 파악하는지 정상인과의 비교를 통해 그 특성을 살펴보고자 하는 데 본 연구의 목적이 있다. 실험 재료로는 구문 중의성 문장을 사용하였는데, 구문 중의성이란 가령 '정치가'와 같은 어절이 '정치+가(주격조사)'나, '정치+가(접미사)' 모두를 뜻할 수 있음을 말한다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 중의성을 이해하는 과정을 알아보기 위해 중의성 해결 지역에서의 읽기 시간(reading time)을 측정하였으며, 실험 과제는 자기 조절 읽기 과제(self-paced reading task)를 사용하였다. 그 결과 정상인 피험자와 마찬가지로 '정치가'와 같은 중의적 어절이 주어로 쓰였을 때에는 중의적 문장 / 비중의적 문장간의 차이가 없었으나 '명사+접사'로 해석해야 할 경우에는 둘 간의 차이가 크게 나타나 피험자였던 명칭성 실어증 환자의 경우 이러한 중의성을 해결하면서 읽는 데에는 손상이 없는 것으로 보였다. 단 전체적인 문장을 읽는데에는 시간이 오래 걸려 역시 문장을 읽고 이해하는 데에는 어려움을 겪는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서, 명칭성 실어증 환자는 문장 산출의 어려움이 구문적 정보처리에서의 문제라기보다는 어휘 정보를 적절하게 인출하지 못하기 때문에 나타나는 것으로 추론된다.

Effects of the Eccentric Viewing Training Software Based on Korean for Reading Speed: A Case Study (한글기반 중심외보기 훈련 프로그램이 읽기속도에 미치는 효과: 사례연구)

  • The aims of this study were to consist of the eccentric viewing training software based on Korean and to examine the effects on reading speed. The program was used the Korean stimuli by rapid serial visual presentation. Single-subject A-B-A' research design for 2 normally-sighted young adults was used to examine the effect. The reading speed data on short-sentence of participants showed a statistically significant result, as both data from the intervention period and post-training baseline period deviated more than 2 standard deviations from the pre-training baseline period. Through this study, we suggested that eccentric viewing training software based on Korean characters stimulation would allow clinician in Korea to improve reading skills of low vision individuals with central scotomas.

The Study on Improvement of Reading Ability for Dyslexia Wearing Color filter lens (ChromaGenTM Lens) (칼라필터 렌즈(ChromaGenTM)를 이용한 읽기능력 향상에 대한 임상연구)

  • Purpose: In this study we investigated improvement degree of reading ability of the student who was in a condition of dyslexia symptoms by wearing $ChromaGen^{TM}$ lenses. Methods: After wearing the $ChromaGen^{TM}$ lens for 3 months, the dyslexia symptoms corrective lens, 52 students who had suspected symptom of dyslexia were asked questions, and we measured the improvement degree of reading ability of the student. Results: The $ChromaGen^{TM}$ wearer read 110.26${\pm}$22.07 words in 1 minute, and naked yeses or glass wearing students read 106.42${\pm}$22.70 words. Reading ability of the student having suspected symptom of dyslexia were measured after wearing $ChromaGen^{TM}$ for 3 months. The results showed improvement reading ability of 3.70${\pm}$0.29 (p=0.01, t=2.26), 4.50%${\pm}$0.10 (p=0.01, t=2.78) for $ChromaGen^{TM}$ wearer with statistical difference. A survey on the satisfaction of reading improvement with wearing $ChromaGen^{TM}$ showed that 88.4% of questioned person answered wearing $ChromaGen^{TM}$ had improved their dyslexia symptoms. Conclusions: With statisical significance (p<0.05). this study suggests that $ChromaGen^{TM}$ lens has an effect on improving reading speed of dyslexia patient. We know from these results that the $ChromaGen^{TM}$ lens which is used to dyslexia had an effect to improvement of reading speed for dyslexia. And the results of this study is statistically different (p<0.05).

Analysis of the Continuity of Reading Passages in the 5th and 6th Grade Elementary School English Textbooks Based on Readability (이독성을 통한 초등학교 5, 6학년 영어 교과서 읽기 지문의 연계성 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the vertical and horizontal continuity between grades and publishers, respectively, by analyzing the readability of reading passages included in English textbooks for 5th and 6th grades of elementary school. In order to do so, a corpus was constructed with the reading passages contained in 10 textbooks, and the reading passages in each textbook were analyzed through Coh-Metrix. Also, it was examined whether there was a statistically significant difference between grades and publishers in readability through one-way ANOVA. The results are as follows. First, as a result of analyzing the difference in readability between publishers within the same grade, there was a statistically significant difference between fifth-grade textbooks in the L2 readability index. Second, as a result of analyzing the vertical continuity between grades within the publisher, the difficulty of textbook A was higher in grade 6 than grade 5 based on FRE and FKGL, which showed a statistically significant difference. On the other hand, when L2 readability was used as the standard, the difficulty of textbook B was lower in 6th grade than in 5th grade. This result seems to be because FRE and FKGL calculate readability based on sentence and word length, whereas L2 readability is based on content word overlap, word frequency, and syntactic similarity of sentences.

Examining Line-breaks in Korean Language Textbooks: the Promotion of Word Spacing and Reading Skills (한국어 교재의 행 바꾸기 -띄어쓰기와 읽기 능력의 계발 -)

  • This study investigates issues in relation to text segmenting, in particular, line breaks in Korean language textbooks. Research on L1 and L2 reading has shown that readers process texts by chunking (grouping words into phrases or meaningful syntactic units) and, therefore, phrase-cued texts are helpful for readers whose syntactic knowledge has not yet been fully developed. In other words, it would be important for language textbooks to avoid awkward syntactic divisions at the end of a line, in particular, those textbooks for beginners and intermediate level learners. According to our analysis of a number of major Korean language textbooks for beginner-level learners, however, many textbooks were found to display line-breaks of awkward syntactic division. Moreover, some textbooks displayed frequent instances where a single word (or eojeol in the case of Korean) is split between different lines. This can hamper not only learners' learning of the rules of spaces between eojeols in Korean, but also learners' development in automatic word recognition, which is an essential part of reading processes. Based on the findings of our textbook analysis and of existing research on reading, this study suggests ways to overcome awkward line-breaks in Korean language textbooks.

A Study on Checklist Development of Articulating Reading Appreciation (독서감상 표현을 위한 체크리스트 개발에 관한 연구)

  • This study focuses on the development of checklist on articulating reading appreciation, which will be used as the initial data for book recommendation for library users. As reading comprehension is prerequisite for reading appreciation, researchers analyzed research articles on reading comprehension to find out the core factors on reading comprehension and categorize them. Studies on reader response theory and literacy education were also examined: key words and phrases that will stimulate readers' response to reading were extracted and formed as questions. These questions were reviewed by experts on reading education. The final checklist consists of 14 questions - 4 questions on literal·inferential comprehension, 3 on evaluative comprehension, and 3 on appreciative comprehension.
