In this study, we investigate a design technology intended to radically increase the buckling strength of vertically curved panels. Recent studies proposed a buckling strength formula which properly reflects the effect on the local plate buckling strength of flat plates when they are stiffened by closed section ribs. Herein, we attempted to quantitatively evaluate this effect on curved panels and to reveal the correlations with the design parameters. The commercial finite element software, ABAQUS, was used to build a three dimensional numerical model and numerical parametric studies were conducted to evaluate the variation of the buckling strength. In the case of flat panels, the local buckling strength of stiffened curved panels increases proportionally with increasing rotational stiffness of the closed-section ribs. After attaining a limiting value, an obvious tendency was found that the local buckling strength of the stiffened curved panel would converge towards a fixed value when the panels are supported along both sides. The parametric studies performed using the influential design parameters confirmed that the estimated partially-restrained curved panel strength is well correlated with the proposed formula.

The increasing sectional stiffness and inducing prestress method of continuous steel box girder using modular CFT members use the restoring force of the CFT module generated from removing the prestressing bars in the CFT module after integrating the prestressed CFT module with the lower steel plate of the steel box girders as a prestressing force. The integrated CFT module in the steel box girder can improve the sectional stiffness of the continuous steel box girder section. To examine the applicability of the introduction of prestressing to the integrated steel box girder using the CFT module, in this study, inducing prestressing tests were conducted using CFT modules for steel plate specimens simulating the lower steel plate of the continuous steel box girder, and FE analyses were conducted for inducing prestressing tests. In addition, to confirm the effect of inducing prestress to the actual steel box girder and increasing sectional stiffness by the CFT modules, FE analyses for the actually applicable continuous steel box section were carried out depending on prestressing force and sectional conditions of the CFT modules, FE analysis results were compared.

A railway bridge with a double composite section is proposed to enhance the structural performance of existing two-girder bridges because the governing design parameter of railway bridges is the flexural stiffness. The concrete deck in negative moment regions is neglected in the design of continuous composite bridges assuming the concrete slab has no resistance to tension. Therefore, the flexural stiffness of the composite section in the negative moment region is reduced resulting in the increase of the depth of the steel section. In order to resolve this disadvantage, several methods are suggested and the double composite section is one of the excellent solutions for extending the span length and increasing the flexural stiffness. In this study, push-out tests on lying studs and mixed stud shear connection with lying and vertical studs were performed to investigate the behavior of the shear connection in the double composite section. Static strength of the shear connection was evaluated through the test results and numerical analyses.

An initial member sections of steel structures is selected by experience of expert building structural designers. And appropriate member section is designed by repeat calculation through structural analysis. Therefore an initial assumption of member section is necessary for saving the time for structural design and is important to acquire safety of building structures. Also brace damper are generally used to prevent or decrease stuctural damage by its hysteretic behavior in building structures subjected to strong earthquake. Based on plastic design, the initial section of members for architectural steel structures with hysteretic damper braces is presented and seismic effect of structural behavior by the ratio of damper stiffness to structural story stiffness is estimated in this paper.

The segment lining design for shield tunnel is generally carried out by using the beam-spring model and the induced member forces from the model are strongly influenced by the components of the model such as imposed load, coefficient of subgrade reaction, location of segment joint and its stiffness. The structural models and stiffness of its connection part found used in abroad design cases is usually obtained as it is for the domestic design of segment of shield tunnel. Those models and stiffness in existing design cases are conventionally applied to a new tunnel design without any suitability review for the project. In this study, the application method of base components of the model such as the coefficient of subgrade reaction and modelling method to the segment lining design was suggested by carrying out the comparative study of the base elements for the member forces estimation of segment lining of shield tunnel.

For the joint connection of the precast steel grid composite decks, the prefabricated joint which is composed of concrete shear key and high-tension bolts was already proposed. In this study, for the purpose of increasing the bending stiffness and bending strength of the proposed prefabricated joint section details of the proposed joint are modified, and through experimental tests the bending performance, such as stiffness and strength of a modified joint, is compared with those of the proposed joint. Test and analysis results show that the shear cracks in the concrete shear key are clearly reduced by the strengthening of the shear key using shear studs and additional rebars. According to analysis results of the moment-curvature relationship, bending stiffness of the modified joint is about 47% greater than the stiffness of the proposed joint. Furthermore, the modified joint has about 32% greater bending strength than the proposed joint. Compared to specimens without the joint the modified joint has same or slightly higher bending strength, but about 37% lower bending stiffness.

The primary objective of the present study was to attempt to quantify the effect of the existing codes for CFT composite section on initial section flexural stiffness, based on the measured vibration frequency of CFT truss girders. The formulae for the initial flexural stiffness of the composite sections in the different codes are compared with the free vibration test results. The results of the free vibration test on the CFT truss girders are in good agreement with the analysis results when used in ACI formulae. The free vibration analysis of CFT truss girders for different f/L ratios was conducted to determine how the natural frequency of the CFT truss girder is affected by different f/L ratios. The presence of the f/L ratios in CFT truss girders alters its frequencies of vibration because of the global stiffness of the CFT girders. The frequency in horizontal modes decreases as the f/L ratio increases. However, the frequency in vertical modes increases as the f/L ratio increases.
In this study, the theoretical dynamic characteristics of a thin-walled composite beam with a single-cell of chordwise asymmetric cross-section was studied. Mathematical modeling was done by considering the transverse shear effects, the warping restraint effects, the constant taper ratio in the longitudinal direction of the beam, and the geometrical cross-section ratio. The mass coefficients, stiffness coefficients, and Eigen frequencies of the selected section were investigated. In particular, the effects of the taper ratio and cross-section ratio of the model on the Eigen frequencies were analyzed and compared when the asymmetry of the section was considered and the warping function was not corrected.
