  • Using holographic interferometry, strain distributions for a cantilever beam subjected to the eccentric force can be analysed. Holographic fringe pattern shows inclined straight lines for the composite deformation of bending and torsion. Using these inclinations of the fringe pattern, 3rd order polynomial of plane displacements can be determined without difficulty. As the result, both of axial and shear strain distribution can be obtained from the second partial derivatives of this polynomial. These results agree well with FEM.

  • A bushing is a device used in automotive suspension systems to reduce the load transmitted from the wheel to the frame of the vehicle. A bushing is a hollow cylinder, which is bonded to a solid steel shaft at its inner surface and a steel sleeve at its outer surface. The relation between the force applied to the shaft and the relative deformation of a bushing is nonlinear and exhibits features of viscoelasticity. A force-displacement relation for bushings is important for multibody dynamics numerical simulations. For the nonlinear viscoelastic axial response, Pipkin-Rogers model, the direct relation of force and displacement, has been derived from Lianis model and the sinusoidal input was used fer Pipkin-Rogers model, and the affection of displacement with frequency change was studied with Pipkin-Rogers model.

  • The Advanced First Order Second Moment(AFOSM) method is commonly used to determine partial safety factors in the development of probability based LRFD code. However, design format using load and resistance factors based on this method may result in different reliability levels from specified ones. Reliability-Conditioned(RC) method recently proposed by Ayyub et al. gives partial safety factors which do not affect the target reliability level as specified. However, this method has some numerical difficulties and the procedure is not consistent. The proposed RC/AFOSM combined method has not only numerical consistency, but also results in almost constant partial safety factors with respect to various design conditions, and the resulting reliability levels are very close to specified ones.

  • A turbine wheel undergoes high heat flux and centrifugal force when a gas turbine starts. The temperature and stress of the turbine wheel increase rapidly, and the time point and rate of them may not coincident. The difference of heating and rotating rates influences the life of turbine wheel. We conducted thermo-mechanical fatigue analysis with finite element methods to study the influence. The low acceleration and deceleration of the wheel extends the life. If the turbine wheel decelerate faster than cooling, the life increases.

  • Accurately controlling the shape of the read/write head structure is critical in the performance of a modem hard disk drive. The sliders investigated are composed of alumina and titanium carbide(AITiC) and act as an air bearing when passing over the disks. Controlling the curvature of the slider is of primary importance. A laser scribing system that produces curvature by inducing residual stress into the slider can be utilized. Predicting the curvature created by a pattern of scribes is of great importance to increase the control over the sliders' shape. The force system that produces stresses similar to the laser scribing is applied to the finite element analysis model. The curvatures created by the force system are calibrated to experimental measurements.

  • Dynamic crack propagation in ductile steel is investigated by means of impact loaded 3 point bending specimens. The specimen has the size of $320{\times}75\;mm$ with a thickness of 10 mm. One static and two dynamic experiments with impact velocities of 30.2 m/s and 45.2 m/s are carried out. High speed photography is used to obtain crack growth and crack tip opening displacement data. Direct measurement of the relative rotation of the two specimen halves is made by using Moire interference pattern. The experiments indicate no or only a slight influence of the loading rate on the crack propagation.

A bushing is a hollow cylinder, which is bonded to a solid steel shaft at its inner surface and a steel sleeve at its outer surface. The relation between the force applied to the shaft and the relative deformation of a bushing is nonlinear and exhibits features of viscoelasticity. Since a force-displacement relation for bushings is important for multibody dynamics numerical simulations, the relation is expressed in terms of a force relaxation function and a method of determination by experiments on bushings has been developed. For the nonlinear viscoelastic axial response, Pipkin-Rogers model, the direct relation of force and displacement, has been derived from experiment. It is shown that the predictions by the proposed force-displacement relation are in very good agreement with the experimental results.

  • A Seismic analysis procedure of bi-directional brideg motions is developed by using mechanical bridge model. A three-dimensional mechanical model can consider major phenomena under bi-directional seismic excitations, such as nonlinear pier motion under biaxial bending, pounding and bearing damage due to the rotaion of the superstructure, etc. The analyses utilizing the uni-directional and the bi-directional bridge model for the 3-span simply supported bridge are then performed. The seismic responses in two cases are examined and compared by investigating the relative displacements of each superstructure to both ground and adjacent superstructures and the restoring forces of RC pier. The analysis using either the uni-directional model or bi-directional model is acceptable for estimating the displacement responses of a bridge, but the bi-directional analysis is found to give more conservative results for resisting forces of RC piers. To make general conclusions, therefore, the analysis using the bi-directional bridge model should be performed in evaluating the seismic safety of bridges.

  • Landslide, one of the serious natural disasters, has Incurred a large loss of human and material resources. Recently, many forecasting or alarm systems based on various kinds of measuring equipment have been developed to reduce the damage of landslide. However, only a few of these equipments are guaranteed to evaluate the safety of whole side of land slope with their accessibility to the slope. In this study, we performed some experiments to evaluate the applicability of a terrestrial LiDAR as a surveying tool to measure the displacement of a land slope surface far a slope collapsing protection system. In the experiments, we had applied a slope stability method to a land slope and then forced to this slope with a load increasing step by step. In each step, we measured the slope surface with both a total station and a terrestrial LiDAR simultaneously. As the result of Slope Fracturing analysis using all targets, the LiDAR system showed that three was 1cm RMSE on X-axis, irregularity errors on Y-axis and few errors on Z-axis compare with Total Station. As the result of Slope Fracturing analysis using continuous targets, the pattern of Slope Fracturing was different according to the location of continuous targets and we could detect a continuous change which couldn't be found using Total station. The accuracy of the LiDAR data was evaluated to be comparable to that of the total station data. We found that a LiDAR system was appropriate to measuring the behaviour of land slope. The LiDAR data can cover the whole surface of the land slope, whereas the total station data are available on a small number of targets. Moreover, we extracted more detail information about the behavior of land slope such as the volume and profile changes using the LiDAR data.
