There have been increasing incidents of natural and social disasters that claimed many lives and caused financial calamities worldwide, which call for an attention to mental health issues affecting disaster victims. This study reviewed the findings of the empirical research on the effects of disaster on the victims, the prevalence and determinants of the mental health problems. The disaster tends to disproportionately affect the socio-economically disadvantaged population and their mental health problems and recovery seemed to be heavily influenced by post-disaster experiences such as restoration of physical environment, prospect of economic recovery and resumption of normalcy in their lives, opportunities for participation in decision-making that affect their lives. Such findings suggest that the disaster mental health should shift from its traditional approach that focuses on short-term clinical interventions to alleviate acute mental distress for the victims to a public health approach that involve medical, social and economic interventions as well as community empowerment to prevent chronicity of the mental health problems and to improve the general quality of life of the individuals and the community adversely affected by the disaster. Implications for the social work research, policy making, education and practice were discussed.
This study aims to examine the effect of food therapy on multi-dimensional health and to suggest valuable information for diet of today's people. The participants were adults over 30 years old, living in Seoul and Gyeonggi district. To examine the effect of food therapy, the study sampled 220 questionnaire out of 230. The multi-dimensional health was measured by Huangdi Neijing's principle on food therapy. And the food therapy was measured by participants' experience, the dosage and the period of the dosage. The data has analyzed by independent sample t-test and multiple regression analysis. The results are as follows: First, the dosage and the period dosage showed significant effect on medical health. Second, no variable showed significant effect on functional health. Third, no variable showed significant effect on subjective health. Therefore, the food therapy showed significant effect on participants' medical health. The result shows that the food therapy has significant effect on people's health.
Along with the well-established evidence on the negative effect of social isolation on physical and mental health, increasing attention has been paid to multi-dimensional nature of social isolation. One line of study on social isolation has discussed different pathways between objective and subjective social isolation and health. Another stream of the research focused on the possibly non-linear association between social isolation and health by age cohort groups. Drawing from the two lines of research, this study aimed at empirically examine to what extent objective and subjective social isolation are associated with physical and mental health independently and how the associations vary by three age cohorts(i.e. the middle-aged, the young old, the old-old). Data came from the first wave of Korean Social Life, Health and Aging Project (KSHAP) (N= 814). Findings showed 1) objective subjective isolation were significantly related with worse physical and mental health, interestingly, subjective social isolation was associated with mental health only, 2) pattern of association between social isolation and physical health varied by age cohorts. Specifically, compared to the middle-aged, the young old with higher objective social isolation exhibited lower level of physical health, while the old-old with higher subjective social isolation were likely to experience lower physical health. Based on the findings, we discussed implications and suggestions for future research and relevant policy/program development for ameliorating objective and subjective social isolation.
The purpose of the study is to examine the effect of parents' raising attitudes, mental health on multidimensional perfectionism of university students. 312 university students in Daejeon and Seoul province were participated in the survey thru convenient sampling and conducted by correlation analysis and multiple regression. The results are as follows: First, the relations of parents' raising attitudes, mental health and multidimensional perfectionism are as follows: subordinate variabies of multidimensional perfectionism, self-oriented perfectionism and father-refusal, father-overprotection, mother-refusal, mother-overprotection, compulsiveness, depression, paranoia, psychosis; socially-imposed perfectionism and father-love, phobia, somatic were found significant. Secondly, multiple regression are as follows; the influencing variable on multidimensional perfectionism are mother-refusal, mother-overprotection, compulsiveness and paranoia, but another variables excepting these variabies were not relevant variabies.

This study aims to figure out factors influencing health and moderating effect of social support resource between those factors and health of low income women in diverse spheres. The data of low income women were 239 cases and were utilized SPSS ver. 21 program. The main results of this study are as follows: firstly, health of low income women is identified medium level. Secondly, education level, self-efficacy and social support resource are related to the self-rated health of low income women. Especially, social support resource functions as moderators on between education and self-rated level of the health of low income women. Consequently, the findings suggest the need to expand the social intervention range to promote health of low income women from cost benefit to psychological support such as capacity building for self-management and establishment of safety-net to extend social support. And subsequently, the time attribute of the factors related to low-income women's health and the diverse characteristics of the subjects should be considered.
This study aimed (a) to examine the association between chronic illness and multidimensional disability(i.e., psychological/emotional functions, activity capacity, and participation frequency) among older adults with disabilities, (b) to investigate the effect of formal and informal supports on multidimensional disability, and (c) to analyze the moderating effects of formal and informal supports on the association between chronic illness and multidimensional disability. This study used 2014 Korea Welfare Panel Study(the 9th wave) data and 450 older adults with disabilities aged 50 and over were selected as the study target. The research model was analyzed by structural equation modeling using IBM AMOS 22.0. Based on the ICF framework developed by WHO, health condition was measured by the level of chronic illness; psychological/emotional functions were measured by health satisfaction, self-esteem, and depression; activity capacity was measured by ADLs and IADLs; participation frequency was measured by the total number of social activities joined; formal support was measured by the total number of formal welfare services for people with disabilities utilized; informal support was measured by perceived social support. The findings showed that the level of chronic illness was negatively associated with psychological/emotional functions among the older adults with disabilities. The informal support positively affected psychological/emotional functions and activity capacity, whereas the formal support showed the opposite result. That is, the formal support negatively influenced activity capacity and showed a moderating effect on the association between the level of chronic illness and the psychological/emotional functions in a reverse way. Based on the results, practice and policy implications for alleviating disability level among the older adults with disabilities were discussed.
This study explored relationships between health perception and behavior of Korean relevant to particulate matter(PM) as PM in the atmosphere getting worse. To investigate the relationship in the personal hygiene dimension, we analysed the structural relationships among multi-dimensional health locus of control, perceived susceptibility and severity, and health behavior intention. Except internal among three tendencies of multi-dimensional health locus of control, chance and powerful other had an effect on perceived susceptibility and severity, respectively. Perceived susceptibility and severity also had a positive effect on the intention. Thus, to facilitate PM-related disease prevention, timely and reliable information should be supplied with the solution for lessening damage from PM, and then training for internalizing locus of control should be encouraged through eliminating fear and uncertainty. Finally, we discussed suggestions for future study.
Precarious employment is negatively associated with mental health including depression. The aim of the study is to suggest the multidimensional definition of precarious employment and examine its impacts on depression. Using the fifth save of the Korean Working Condition Survey, we first measured six different dimensions of employment precariousness: temporariness, disempowerment, vulnerability, difficulty exercising rights, unpredictability of working times, and low wage. All of six precariousness indicators consisted of a scale from 0 to 100. Then, we conducted logistic regression to examine the association between employment precariousness and depression. For men, the risk of depression increased by 3.1%, 1%, and 0.5%, respectively, for each one point increase in vulnerability, difficulty in exercising rights, and unpredictability of working times. For women, the risk increased by 0.5%, 2.3%, and 0.8%, respectively, for each one point increase in temporariness, vulnerability, and difficulty in exercising rights. Our findings suggest that not only a secure employment contract, but also their substantive labor rights should be guaranteed for health for workers.
Present study notes that youth poverty is not only an income deficit, but also a deficit in various dimensions of life such as housing, work and health deficit. Multidimensional poverty is measured by four dimensions: income, work, housing and health. The sample is a 2630 one-person household female youth pooled from the Korea Welfare Panel 10-Year Data. The analysis tool used SPSS statistical program, and the analysis framework was the deficiency rate by dimension, the correlation analysis between deficiency dimension, and the overlapping rate of N dimension poverty. As a result, women's youth in Korea had higher deficit rate in terms of work and housing than other dimensions, and the proportion of women youth who were both poor in work and housing at the same time was also relatively higher than in other cases. Based on these results, this study proposes the construction of customized job services, job matching with small and medium-sized enterprises and allocation of one young woman's household among the targets of long-term chartered housing. Female youth's sharing-economy association should be considered as alternatives.
