  • A new three-node triangular shell element based on higher order zig-zag theory is developed for laminated composite shells with multiple delaminations. The present higher order zig-zag shell theory is described in a general curvilinear coordinate system and in general tensor notation. All the complicated curvatures of surface including twisting curvatures can be described in an exact manner in the present shell element because this element is based on geometrically exact surface representation. The displacement field of the proposed finite element includes slope of deflection, which requires continuity between element interfaces. Thus the nonconforming shape function of Specht's three-node triangular plate bending element is employed to interpolate out-of-plane displacement. The present element passes the bending and twisting patch tests in flat surface configurations. The developed element is evaluated through the eigenvalue problems of composite cylindrical shells with multiple delaminations. Through the numerical examples it is demonstrated that the proposed shell element is efficient because it has minimal degrees of freedom per node. The present shell element should serve as a powerful tool in the prediction of natural frequency and modes of multi-layered thick laminated shell structures with arbitrary-shaped multiple delaminations.

  • A material mixing method to obtain an optimal topology for a structure in a thermal environment was suggested. This method is based on Evolutionary Structural Optimization(ESO). The proposed material mixing method extends the ESO method to a mixing several materials for a structure in the multicriteria optimization of thermal flux and thermal stress. To do this, the multiobjective optimization technique was implemented. The overall efficiency of material usage was measured in terms of the combination of thermal stress levels and heat flux densities by using a combination strategy with weighting factors. Also, a smoothing scheme was implemented to suppress the checkerboard pattern in the procedure of topology optimization. It is concluded that ESO method with a smoothing scheme is effectively applied to topology optimization. Optimal topologies having multiple thermal criteria for a printed circuit board(PCB) substrate were presented to illustrate validity of the suggested material mixing method. It was found that the suggested method works very well for the multicriteria topology optimization.

  • Recently, the polishing process using magnetorheological fluids(MR fluids) has been focused as a new ultra-precision polishing technology for micro and optical parts such as aspheric lenses, etc. This method uses MR fluid as a polishing media which contains required micro abrasives. In the MR polishing process, the surface roughness and material removal rate of a workpiece are affected by the process parameters, such as the properties of used nonmagnetic abrasives(particle material, size, aspect ratio and density, etc.), rotating wheel speed, imposed magnetic flux density and feed rate, etc. The objective of this research is to predict MRR according to the polishing conditions based on the multiple regression analysis. Three polishing parameters such as wheel speed, feed rates and current value were optimized. For experimental works, an orthogonal array L27(313) was used based on DOE(Design of Experiments), and ANOVA(Analysis of Variance) was carried out. Finally, it was possible to recognize that the sequence of the factors affecting MRR correspond to feed rate, current and wheel speed, and to determine a combination of optimal polishing conditions.

  • The coating of metal surface with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been studied for the heat transfer enhancement of the boiling and condensation of refrigerant. The MWCNT/copper composite powder was made by the attrition ball milling, which has been coated on the copper wafer by electrostatic powder coating and sintered with electric furnace. In this paper, experiments were performed to assess the characterization and comparison of CNT before and after sinterning and the morphology changes of the CNT/Cu-coated surface. The samples were examined by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) and raman spectroscopy. To verify the heat transfer enhancement, boiling heat transfer tests were performed.

  • In this paper, variable gain amplifier(VGA) with a gain slope controller has been proposed and verified by circuit simulations and measurements. The proposed VGA has a gain control, gain slope switch and variable gain range. The input source coupled pair with diode connected load is used for VGA gain stage. The gain slope controller with switch can control VGA gain slope. The proposed VGA is fabricated in $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process for multi -standard wireless receiver. The proposed two stage VGA consumes min. 2.0 mW to max. 2.6 mW in gain control range and gives input IP3 of -3.77 dBm and NF of 28.7 dB at 1.8 V power supply under -25 dBm, 1 MHz input. The proposed VGA has 37 dB(-16 dB $\sim$ 21 dB) variable gain range, and 8 dB gain range control per 0.3 V control voltage, and can provide variable gain, positive and negative gain slope control, and gain range control. This VGA characteristics provide design flexibility in multi-standard wireless receiver.

  • Temperature and injection current dependence of elctroluminescence(EL) spectral intensity of the $In_{0.27}Ga_{0.73}N/GaN$ multi-quantum-well(MQW) have been studied over a wide temperature and as a function of injection current level. EL peaks also show significant broadening into higher photon energy region with the increase of injection current. This is explained by the band-filling effect. When temperature is slightly increased to 300 from 15 K, the EL emission peak showed red-blue-red shift. It can be explained by the carrier localization by potential fluctuation of multiple quantum well and band-gap shrinkage as temperature increase. It is found that a temperature-dependent variation pattern of the EL efficiency under very low and high injection currents show a drastic difference. This unique EL efficiency variation pattern with temperature and current is explained field effects due to the driving forward bias in presence of internal(piezo and spontaneous polarization) fields.

  • Two-dimensional photonic quasicrystal (PQCs) template patterns have been fabricated on a $1.1{\mu}m$-thick DMI-150 photoresist using a multiple-exposure holographic method. A 442-nm HeCd laser was utilized as a light source and the holographic exposure was carried out at a fixed angle of $\theta=6^{\circ}$. After the first holographic exposure, the sample was rotated to a proper angle and the second exposure was performed to the same manner. This exposure process was repeated n/2 times to obtain n-fold symmetric PQC patterns and then the sample was developed. The fabricated PQCs exhibited 8, 10 and 12-fold rotational symmetry and the diffraction patterns using a 632.8-nm HeNe laser were observed for n-rotation symmetry corresponding n-fold PQCs. The fabricated PQC template patterns were examined using scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Transmission spectra were measured fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectrometer.

  • Effect of multi-stacked layer (MSL), 0.1 mol (M) and 0.3 mol (M) hafnium oxide ($HfO_2$) alignment layers were fabricated via a solution-process for LCs orientation. The solutions were spin-coated and annealed in a furnace. MSL consists of three sub-layers using 0.1 M solution, mono-layer (ML) is composed of 0.3 M $HfO_2$ solution. Then ion-beam irradiation was treated with 1.8 keV for 2 min. $HfO_2$-based LC cells were investigated through photographs, pre-tilt angle using crystal rotation method, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurement, and surface roughness using atomic force microscopy(AFM) for their characteristic research. Good LC orientation characteristics were observed on MSL $HfO_2$ surface. The LC alignment mechanism on MSL $HfO_2$ and ML $HfO_2$ surfaces was attributed to van der Waals (VDW) interaction between the LC molecular and substrate surface.

  • We investigated the temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectroscopy of colloidal InZnP/ZnSe/ZnS (core/shell/shell) quantum dots with varying ZnSe and ZnS shell thickness in the 278~363 K temperature range. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence of the InZnP-based quantum dot samples reveal red-shifting of the photoluminescence peaks, thermal quenching of photoluminescence, and broadening of bandwidth with increasing temperature. The degree of band-gap shifting and line broadening as a function of temperature is affected little by shell composition and thickness. However, the thermal quenching of the photoluminescence is strongly dependent on the shell components. The irreversible photoluminescence quenching behavior is dominant for thin-shell-deposited InZnP quantum dots, whereas thick-shelled InZnP quantum dots exhibit superior thermal stability of the photoluminescence intensity.
