The propagation of impact wave induced by landslide and debris flow occurred on the slope of lake, reservoir and bays is a three-dimensional natural phenomenon associated with strong interaction of debris flow and water flow in complex geometrical environments. We carried out 3D numerical modeling of such impact wave in a bay using a multiphase turbulence flow model and a rheology model for non-Newtonian debris flow. Numerical results are compared with previous experimental result to evaluate the performance of present numerical approach. The results underscore that the reasonable predictions of both thickness and speed of debris flow head penetrating below the water surface are crucial to accurately reproduce the maximum peak height and free surface profiles of impact wave. Two predictions computed using different initial debris flow thicknesses become different from the instant when the peaks of impact waves fall due to the gravity. Numerical modeling using relatively thick initial debris flow thickness appears to well reproduce the water surface profile of impact wave propagating across the bay as well as wave run-up on the opposite slope. The results show that the maximum run-up height on the opposite slope is not sensitive to the initial thickness of debris flows of same total volume. Meanwhile, appropriate rheology model for debris flow consisting of inviscid particle only should be employed to more accurately reproduce the debris flow propagating along the channel bottom.
The multiphase flow simulator, CHEMPS, was developed based on the fractional flow approach reported in the petroleum engineering literature considering fully three phase flow in physically and chemically heterogeneous media. It is a extension of MPS developed by Suk and Yeh (2008) to include the effect of wettability on the migration of NAPL. The fractional flow approach employs water, total liquid saturation and total pressure as the primary variables. Most existing models are limited to two-phase flow and specific boundary conditions when considering physically heterogeneous media. In addition, these models focused mainly on the water-wet media. However, in a real system, variations in wettability between water-wet and oil-wet media often occur. Furthermore, the wetting of porous media by oil can be heterogeneous, or fractional, rather than uniform due to the heterogeneous nature of the subsurface media and the factors that affect the wettability. Therefore, in this study, the chemically heterogeneous media considering fractional wettability as well as physically heterogeneous media were simulated using CHEMPS. In addition, the general boundary conditions were considered to be a combination of two types of boundaries of individual phases, flux-type and Dirichlet type boundaries.

It is essential to understand the complex thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) coupled behavior in the engineered barrier system and natural barrier system to secure the high-level radioactive waste repository's long-term safety. The heat from the high-level radioactive waste induces thermal pressurization and vaporization of groundwater in the repository system. Groundwater inflow affects the saturation variation in the engineered barrier system, and the saturation change influences the heat transfer and multi-phase flow characteristics in the buffer. Due to the complexity of the coupled behavior, a numerical simulation is a valuable tool to predict and evaluate the THMC interaction effect on the disposal system and safety assessment. To enhance the knowledge of THMC coupled interaction and validate modeling techniques in geological systems. DECOVALEX, an international cooperation project, was initiated in 1992, and KAERI has participated in the projects since 2008 in Korea. In this study, we introduced the main contents of all tasks in the DECOVALEX-2023, the current DECOVALEX phase, to the rock mechanics and geotechnical researchers in Korea.
Recently, analysis researches on durability are focused on chloride attack and carbonation due to increased social and engineering significance. Generally, chloride penetration and carbonation occur simultaneously except for in submerged condition and chloride behavior in carbonated concrete is evaluated to be different from that in normal concrete. Furthermore, if unavoidable crack occurs in concrete, it influences not only single attack but also coupled deterioration more severely. This is a study on analysis technique with system dynamics for chloride penetration in concrete structures exposed to coupled chloride attack and carbonation through chloride diffusion, permeation, and carbonation reaction. For the purpose, a modeling for chloride behavior considering diffusion and permeation is performed through previous models for early-aged concrete such as MCHHM (multi component hydration heat model) and MPSFM (micro pore structure formation). Then model for combined deterioration is developed considering changed characteristics such as pore distribution, saturation and dissociation of bound chloride content under carbonation. The developed model is verified through comparison with previous experimental data. Additionally, simulation for combined deterioration in cracked concrete is carried out through utilizing previously developed models for chloride penetration and carbonation in cracked concrete. From the simulated results, CCTZ (chloride-carbonation transition zone) for evaluating combined deterioration is proposed. It is numerically verified that concrete with slag has better resistance to combined deterioration than concrete with OPC in sound and cracked concrete.
Microstructure and fracture behavior of a multi-phase low-density steel were investigated. After hot-rolling and heat treatment, the microstructure of low-density steel was composed of coarse ferrite grains and elongated bands which include second phases such as austenite, martensite and ${\kappa}$-carbide depending on holding time during isothermal heat treatment. After tensile test, microcracks were observed at martensite or ${\kappa}$-carbide interface in the elongated bands. Coarse ferrite grains showed cleavage fracture behavior regardless of second phase. The cleavage fracture of ferrite could be attributed to their coarse grain size and solute atoms that increase ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of ferrite. Despite of the tendency of cleavage fracture in coarse ferrite grains, a specimen having coarse spheroidized ${\kappa}$-carbide particles in the elongated bands showed high total elongation of 30%. Thus, the easiness of plastic deformation in the elongated band seems to play an important role in retardation of cleavage crack formation in coarse ferrite grains.

In the present work, it was investigated a behavior of hydrogen embrittlement at the subsurface zones of 590 DP steels by using the micro-Vickers hardness test. The micro-Vickers hardnessess of DP steels were measured to evaluate the degree of embrittlement as the effective hardening depths of subsurface zones with hydrogen charging conditions. The results showed that the distributions of micro-Vickers hardness in width varied from maximum hardness 239.5 Hv to minimum hardness 174 Hv, while the depth of effective hardening layer at the subsurface zones of DP steels was from $320{\mu}m$ to $460{\mu}m$ with hydrogen charging conditions, respectively. It was proposed that the distribution of microhardness be used as the evaluation index of the degree of embrittlement. But the variations of martensite volume fractions were not affected along depth of hardening at the same changing time, hydrogen charging times were appeared as an effective factor of the degree of embrittlement. Therefore, the micro-Vickers hardness test is an attractive tool for evaluation of hydrogen embrittlement at the subsurface zones of these DP steels.
The multiphase flow analysis related to phase change can be adapted to lots of areas such as evaporation and condensation has many interesting branches due to complicated phenomenon. In this study, the experimental investigation of cryogenic liquid in the porous media with various densities was shown how the cryogenic liquid behaves in the porous structure. For this study, permeability behaviors under different applying pressure of the glass wool with different bulk densities are discussed. Experimental investigation on the behavior of cryogenic liquefied nitrogen in the porous media is conducted. The result was that the non linearity of pressure gradient with location is increased and the permeability is decreased as the bulk density of glass wool increased. Lastly, simulation results with CFD commercial package program are used to realize the cryogenic liquid's flow in porous media to compare the finding with experimental results.

Understanding of the phase distribution in a multi-phase polycrystalline material is important because it can affect material properties and mechanical behaviors significantly. In this research, probability functions (two-point correlation and lineal-path functions) are used to represent the phase distributions of microstructures. The two-phase microstructures with random phase distribution are reconstructed using probability functions and compared with original samples. Mechanical behaviors of the virtual samples for different directions are evaluated using a finite element method. It is confirmed that microstructures with the same statistical characteristics can be generated using the reconstruction method. It is also demonstrated that the characteristics of the probability functions and mechanical reponses between the original and reconstructed microsturctures are statistically identical.

Grouting for the rock joint is to strengthen the rock strata by infiltrating cement grout materials into the rock joints. Grouting is one of a field of study which is difficult to develop deterministic and quantitative design approach because of multiphase behaviors of grout materials and 3 dimensional features of rock joints. Therefore, GIN (Grouting Intensity Number) can be a good index with appropriate monitoring of pressure and volume of grout. In this paper, we investigate the effects of joint roughness (JRC) and rheology of cement material during the infiltration of cement grout material into rock joint through CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analyses. With rough joint surface and increase of WC ratio, the frictional resistance during the grouting increases. The results have been summarized with polynomial correlations.

There has been an increased interest in the mitigation of wax deposition because wax, which usually accumulates in subsea oil-production systems, interrupts stable oil production and significantly increases the cost. To guarantee a required oil flow by mitigating wax deposition, we need to obtain a reliable estimation of the wax deposition. In this research, we perform simulations to understand the major mechanisms that lead to wax deposition, namely molecular diffusion, shear stripping reduction, and aging. While the model variables (shear reduction multiplier, wax porosity, wax thermal conductivity, and molecular diffusion multiplier) can be measured experimentally, they have high uncertainty. We perform an analysis of these variables and the amount of water and gas in the multiphase flow to determine these effects on the behavior of wax deposition. Based on the results obtained during this study for a higher wax porosity and molecular diffusion multiplier, we were able to confirm the presence of thicker wax deposits. As the shear reduction multiplier decreased, the thickness of the wax deposits increased. As the amount of water increased, there was also an increase in the amount of wax deposits until 40% water cut and decreased. As the amount of gas increased, the amount of wax deposits increased because of the loss of the light hydrocarbon component in the liquid phase. The results of this study can be utilized to estimate the wax deposition behavior by comparing the experiment (or field) and simulation data.
