  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the longitudinal changes in the academic achievement of Korean adolescents who transition from elementary to middle school and examine the individual and social factors of the changes using piecewise growth modeling. For this study, the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study (MAPS) data from 1st to 6th waves (4th-9th grade) were used. The results are as follows. First, the results showed that the piecewise growth function was the most appropriate method to explain changes in the academic achievement of Korean adolescents with respect to the time of vacation. Second, adolescents' academic achievement declined constantly and was greater for middle school students. Third, parental efficacy, self-esteem, and support from friends had a significant positive effect, while uninvolved parenting and acculturation stress had a significant negative effect on the initial value of academic achievement. Self-esteem and support from friends in the 4th grade prohibit its decline in the first change rate of academic achievements. Meanwhile, acculturation stress for 4th-grade students accelerates the decline of academic achievement.

In this study, photo-in-education (PIE) provides North Korean youths with opportunities for cultural and arts education, and to help them adjust themselves to South Korean society. As a result, they, as young people who are exploring a new life in South Korea, have been able to express their own inner world through photos, videos, and writings. Also, young people have developed a bright and clear mind, and enhanced an expressive power and logical power that helps grow healthily and intelligently. Further, it is the aim of this education to help them to have a positive feeling for society and to do their best to become a healthy member of society, who will be able to contribute to society. Through PIE, it was found that North Korean defectors were able to see themselves positively and express their own inner self positively, despite that they are still in the negative and shady side of life.

  • As of the end of the year 2016, the foreigners staying in Korea have surpassed 2 million people for the very first time ever since the statistical writings began. Because the inflow of the foreigners has been greatly increased within a short time period, the Korean society has been rapidly changing into a multi-racial and multi-ethnic society, and the children of the multicultural families, too, have been increasing gradually. Because of the social prejudices, discriminations, negative recognitions, etc., the children of the multicultural families get exposed to the diverse problems. It can be considered that such social prejudices and negative recognitions comprise the discourses that are possessed by the constituent members of the society regarding a certain subject or phenomenon. By analyzing the special characteristics and discourses of the reports on the multicultural children and youths by the Korean press through newspaper articles, this research confirmed what influences the media have in the process of forming the recognitions regarding the multicultural children and youths at present. As a result of the research, the discourses appearing in the newspapers could be typed into the support emphasizing frame of the Korean society, the adaptation emphasizing frame of the Korean society, the global people of talent frame, the change emphasizing frame of the Korean society, and the social problem emphasizing frame. Based on such research results, I made a proposal regarding the direction for the desirable reports by the media.

First, the daily life stress of multicultural parents did not affect the learning care style of their children. Second, parental efficacy was found to be mediating between daily life stress of multicultural parents and child's learning care style. In other words, the positive role of parental efficacy plays an important role in the child's learning care style by improving the stress-relieving ability of multicultural parents.

For testing research questions, using Model 6 of the SPSS PROCESS Macro, this study analyzed simple and multiple mediation effects with a sample of 1,021 adolescents with Korean fathers and foreign-born mothers from the 8th wave's raw data of the Multicultural Adolescent Panel Study (MAPS). The main results are as follows. First, mothers' acculturative stress positively influenced children's carrier barrier. Second, mother's daily stress and neglectful parenting individually mediated the influence of mothers' acculturative stress on children's carrier barrier. Third, mother's depression and neglectful parenting dual-mediated the influence of mothers' acculturative stress on children's carrier barrier. Fourth, a triple mediation of mothers' daily stress, depression, and neglectful parenting was found in the influence of mothers' acculturative stress on children's carrier barrier. Based on the results, strategies to support the career development of multicultural adolescents were suggested.

  • This study investigated the longitudinal transition of adolescents' psychological character profiles, which includes self-esteem, acculturative stress, depression, and social withdrawal, and the predictive effects of parental efficacy, families' support, and friends' support in multicultural families. The sample consisted of 1,188 adolescents in elementary school, who were re-examined in three years, when they were in middle school from the part of waves 2 and 6 of the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study. A latent profile analysis identified three distinct profiles of psychological character among adolescents in elementary school and middle school: stable, social withdrawal, and unstable. As compared to elementary school, adolescents' psychological characteristics stayed stable and played critical roles on the latent classes. Parental efficacy, and supports from family and friends played critical roles on the latent classes. Specifically, as adolescents perceived full of supports from friends, they were more likely to make transitions to the stable group. Implications for intervention in multicultural families are discussed.
