  • In this study, fluid flow and thermal characteristics in a catalyst bed for nitrous oxide catalytic decomposition which is introduced as a hybrid rocket ignition system for small satellites were theoretically considered. To analyze the thermal phenomena of the catalyst bed, a so-called porous medium approach has been opted for modeling the honeycomb geometry of the catalyst bed. Using a Brinkman-extended Darcy model for fluid flow and the one-equation model for heat transfer, the analytical solutions for both velocity and temperature distributions in the catalyst bed are obtained and compared with experimental data to validate the porous medium approach. Based on the analytical solutions, parameters of engineering importance are identified to be the porosity of the catalyst bed, effective volumetric ratio, the ratio of the radius of the catalyst bed to the radius of a pore, heat flux generated by a heater, and pumping power. Their effects on thermal phenomena of the catalyst bed are studied.

  • In the present study a detailed examination of various porous media models for predicting filtration efficiency and pressure drop of diesel particulate filter (DPF), such as sphere-in-cell and constricted tube models, are attempted. In order for demonstrating their validities of correct estimation on permeability, geometry of property configurations common in commercial cordierite DPFs are correlated to the porous media flow models, and validations of predicted filtration efficiencies due to the use of different unit collectors are made with experiments. The result shows that the porosity, pore size and permeability of cordierite DPF can be successfully correlated by Kuwabara flow field with correction factor of 0.6. The unit collector efficiency predicted by sphere-in-cell model agrees very well with measurements in accumulation mode, whereas that by constricted tube model with significant prediction error.

  • An expression for the cross covariance of the logconductivity and the head in nonstationary porous formation is obtained. This cross covariance plays a key role in the inverse problem, i.e., in inferring the statistical characteristics of the conductivity field from head data. The nonstationary logconductivity is modeled as superposition of definite linear trend and stationary fluctuation and the hydraulic head in saturated aquifers is found through stochastic analysis of a steady, two-dimensional flow. The cross covariance with a Gaussian correlation function is investigated for two particular cases where the trend is either parallel or normal to the head gradient. The results show that cross covariances are stationary except along separation distances parallel to the mean flow direction for the case where the trend is parallel to head gradient. Also, unlike the stationary model, the cross covariance along distances normal to flow direction is non-zero. From these observations we conclude that when a trend in the conductivity field is suspected, this information must be incorporated in the analysis of groundwater flow and solute transjport.

  • In the present study, flow fields inside a photocatalysis air cleaning system have been investigated to obtain the data for optimum design of the system. For this investigation, we first predicted the pressure drop of a photocatalysis filter. Based on this calculation, we replaced the filter by the porous media and analysed the performance of the entire system. This porous media assumption could predict characteristics of the cylindrical photocatalysis filter within 1%. Two cases of the cylindrical filter were considered in the present calculations. The first case had an inside diameter of 6 mm, while the second case had an inside diameter of 20 mm. It was found that the first case of filter showed a pressure drop three times higher than that of the second case. In addition, the cylindrical filter equipped with a housing to hold a number of cylinders in a bundle was also analyzed. When the housing was present, the pressure drop increased. It was found that the pressure drop is 8 times higher than that of the case when the housing was not equipped.

  • In the present study, buoyant force and its stabilizing effects in an electrostatic field were examined systematically in order to reduce the effect of natural convection with thermal stratification in a horizontal fluid-saturated porous layer. The correlation of ionic mass transport induced by double-diffusive convection in a horizontal porous layer has been derived theoretically. And the theoretical model was examined by electrochemical experiments. The theoretical correlation for mass transport which is satisfying Forchheimer's flow equation and based on the micro-turbulence model is derived as a function of soltual Darcy-Rayleigh number, thermal Darcy-Rayleigh number and Lewis number. In the experiment, the mass transport of copper ions in $CuSO_4-H_2SO_4$ solution is measured by electrochemical technique. By assembling theoretical correlation and experimental results, the mass transport correlation induced by double-diffusive convection is proposed as $$Sh=\frac{0.03054(Rs_D-LeRa_D)^{1/2}}{1-3.8788(Rs_D-LeRa_D)^{-1/10}}$$ The present correlation looks flirty reasonable with comparing experimental results, and very promising for the applications of its prototype into various systems involving heat transfer as well as mass transfer, in order to control the effects of natural convection effectively.
