In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to produce 3-D surface model from a set of range data, based on NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) surface fitting technique. It is assumed that the range data is initially unorganized and scattered 3-D points, while their connectivity is also unknown. The proposed algorithm consists of three steps: initial model approximation, hierarchical representation, and construction of the NURBS patch network. The mitral model is approximated by polyhedral and triangular model using K-means clustering technique Then, the initial model is represented by hierarchically decomposed tree structure. Based on this, $G^1$ continuous NURBS patch network is constructed efficiently. The computational complexity as well as the modeling error is much reduced by means of hierarchical decomposition and precise approximation of the NURBS control mesh Experimental results show that the initial model as well as the NURBS patch network are constructed automatically, while the modeling error is observed to be negligible.

This paper presents the mathematical model for rolling behaviors of a small regular polygonal part on an inclined plane. Throughout the numerical analysis performed with the simulation program which has been experimentally validated, it is shown that the number of edges of the rolling polygonal part can be a measure for the energy dissipation rather than the coefficient of friction. The appropriate slope angle has been found to be around 20 degree for roughness-separation as well as shape-separation of polygonal parts which have small number of edges. In additions, the vibratory motion applied to the inclined plane is able to cause mixed parts to be separated more effectively according to the shape or the roughness. Finally, a couple of parts separation methods based on the analysis results are presented, and are validated through the numerical simulation.

This paper describes the algorithm of computing thermal contact conductance between unmatched grid interfaces for finite element thermal analysis. Because grid interfaces should be coincident with adjacent meshes for finite element method, large amount of man hours and huge computations are required to match interfaces between many numbers of complex subdomains. A novel method that distributes feasibly the conductances to interface nodes is proposed. The aims of the method are described, and details of the nodal conductance distribution algorithm with less dependency on meshes are represented. The algorithm can be applied both the flat and curved interfaces in 3 dimensional space, and proposed method can combined with many finite element application including thermal analysis.
This study has been designed to elucidate the morphology of Jisagae columnar joints and the petrography and petrochemistry of Daepodong basalt in Jeju Island, distributed along the 3.5 km-long coast from Seongcheonpo to Weolpyeongdong. Colonnade of the Jisagae columnar joint typically occurs within the upper part of a flow and consists of relatively well-formed basalt columns. Most columns are straight with parallel sides and diameters from 100 cm to 205 cm, $130\~139\;cm$ in maximum. Length of the columns extends up to 20 m. Most columns tend to have 6 or 5 sides but sometimes they have as few as $3\~4$ or as many as 7 or 8 sides. The Daepodong basalt consists of plagioclase, olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, ilmenite and magnetite. Plagioclase is labradorite, clinopyroxene is augite, orthopyroxene is bronzite and olivine is chrysolite and hyalosiderite. The Daepodong basalt shows porphyritic texture with matrix of mainly intersetal texture. The Daepodong basalt is plotted into alkali rock series on the TAS diagram. The tectonic setting of the Daepodong basalt represents within plate environment.

Local and general factors have been attributed to root resorption occurred by injuries such as trauma and dental caries that affect periodontal ligament or dental pulp tissue. Pathologic root resorption is different from physiologic root resorption in terms of resorption pattern such as micromorphology of resorption fossae and types of observed cells. Microscopic morphologies and histologic features of physiologic and pathologic root resorption surface of maxillary primary central incisors resulting from trauma and periapical inflammation were observed by scanning electron microscope and light microscope. The morphology of physiologic resorption lacunae was small and oval or circular shape with regularities. The morphology of pathologic resorption lacunae was large and polygonal shape with irregularities compared with the physiologic resorption lacunae. Multinucleated giant cells and mononuclear cells were closely attached to the physiologic and pathologic resorption lacunae, whereas several kinds of mesenchymal cells with numerous inflammatory cells were found in the areas adjacent to the pathologic resorption surface. Compensating cementum formation took place along some of the areas of physiologic and pathologic resorption area resulting from trauma, but could not be observed on pathologic resorption area resulting from periapical inflammation.

This paper describes a smooth surface interpolating method of ship hull using a three-dimensional currie net that comes from the mesh curve fairing process. Geometric continuity(($GC^1$) is preserved across the boundary curve between patches. The three-dimensional curve net can have nonrectangular topologies, such as triangular and pentagonal topology. Among the boundary curve interpolation methods, Hermite blended Coons patch, Convex combination, and Gregory patch interpolation method are used to generate the ship hull surface. To check the fairness of the surface, the numerical method of surface/surface intersection problem is adopted. An application to an actual ship hull is given as an example.

The current paper proposes a new vertex selection scheme for polygon-based contour coding. To efficiently characterize the shape of an object, we incorporate the curvature information in addition to the conventional maximum distance criterion in vertex selection process. The proposed method consists of "two-step procedure." At first, contour pixels of high curvature value are selected as key vortices based on the curvature scale space (CSS), thereby dividing an overall contour into several contour-segments. Each segment is considered as an open contour whose end points are two consecutive key vortices and is processed independently. In the second step, vertices for each contour segment are selected using progressive vertex selection (PVS) method in order to obtain minimum number of vertices under the given maximum distance criterion ( $D_{max}$$^{*}$). Furthermore, the obtained vortices are adjusted using the dynamic programming (DP) technique to optimal positions in the error area sense. Experimental results are presented to compare the approximation performances of the proposed and conventional methods.imation performances of the proposed and conventional methods.

Deciduous teeth can be extracted for two reasons, one due to the physiologic resorption and the other by the inflammation at the apex after traumatic injury. Physiologic resorption may be different from pathologic resorption in timing and mechanism. Therefore we resumed the different features of physiologic and pathologic resorption root surfaces. Many previous studies showed micromorphology of resorbed surface of roots of deciduous teeth. But, few studies compared physiological and pathological root resorption surfaces. In this study, we carefully observed microscopic morphologies of those two different root surfaces by scanning electron microscope and histologic features by light microscope. The resultant differences between physiologic and pathologic resorption surfaces of deciduous teeth were as follows: 1. The morphology of pathologic resorption lacunae due to inflammation varied in size and shape with irregular boundaries compared with the physiologic areas from scanning electron microscope observations. 2. From light microscope observations, several large resorption fossae containing numerous resorption lacunae were found, whereas the resorption lacunae were irregular in shape with pathologic resorption surface. 3. Numerous multinucleated giant cells were closely attached to the physiologic resorption lacunae, whereas several kinds of mesenchymal cells with numerous inflammatory cells were found in the areas adjacent to the pathologic resorption surface. 4. Light microscope findings showed that compensating cementum formation took place along some of the areas of inflammatory dentinal resorption. In conclusion, several morphological differences were present between physiologic and pathologic root resorption surfaces of human deciduous teeth. The future studies should include cytochemistry to clarify the cellular roles in resorption process observations of pulpal surfaces of coronal and radicular dentin to and the changes that occur in each phase of human deciduous tooth resorption.

In this paper, an analysis and design method is proposed, which is to improve the directivity of microstrip array antennas conformed to a cylindrical surface. In the case of forming an arc-array in the circumferential direction on a circula-cylinder surface, the circular-cylinder can be approximated to a polygonal-pillar and on each pillar-planes the sub-arrays, Dolph-Tschebyscheff array and uniform array with a beam steered in the desired direction, would make a sharp directivity for the total cylin- drical array antenna. And the radiation pattern according to the type of its sub arrays is analyzed and compared using the cylindrical-cavity codel. A cylindrical microstrip array antenna, with 12 elements and uniform arra as a sub-array which have an equal distance$\lambda_0$/2between the elements, is manufactured and conformed to a cylinder with radius of 6 The measured data of side lobe level, HPBW and FNBW are - 13dB, $9^{\circ}$, and $15{\circ}$, ,respectively. This result shows a good improvement on the directivity comparing with a linear array.

In this paper, an efficient algorithm for recognizing and positioning occuluded objects in a two-dimensional plane is presented. Model objects and unknown input image are approximated by polygonal boundaries, which are compactly represented by shape functions of the polygons. The input image is partitioned into measningful segments whose end points are at the locations of possible occlusion - i.e. at concave vertices. Each segment is matched against known model objects by calculating a matching measure, which is defined as the minimum euclidean distance between the shape functions. An O(mm(n+m) algorithm for computing the measure is presentd, where n and m are the number of veritces for a model and an unknown object, respectively. Match results from aprtial segments are combined based on mutual compatibility, then are verified using distance transformation and translation vector to produce the final recognition. The proposed algorithm is invariant under translation and rotation of objects, which has been shown by experimental results.
