  • Accident likelihood is growing due to a correlation for gas and electricity installed in the area of dense energy consumption like traditional market and underground shopping center. In order to prevent and respond accident risks related to gas and electricity in this area, it should be monitored and predicted for factors of gas leak or electricity by developing safety management system. This study is about accident prediction model development considering fire risk factor related to gas accident. The temperature variation characteristic near a gas burner was analyzed. Also, accident prediction algorithm and related module were developed to prevent fire in the area of dense energy consumption.

  • This study reviewed useful aspects of the intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography among the patients in whom heart surgery were undertaken between January 1996 and July 1996 at St.Pauls hospital, Medical College of Catholic University, Seoul, Korea. During that period, 61 patients were operated on because of valvular heart disease(25 patients), coronary artery disease(22 patients), congenital heart disease(13 patients), and combined coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease(1 patient). Two patients(1 redo-VSD and 1 valvular heart diease) needed repeated aortic cross clamping and complementary procedures because of incomplete initial procedures. There was no incidence of air embolism. We could observe significant relationship of cardiac output monitoring methods either by thermodilution technique and transesophageal echocardiography by linear regression analysis(p<0.001). We tested myocardial response(percentage of systolic wall thickness, PSWT) with low dose dobutamine challenge to predict post-CABG myocardial perfusion. And the test showed statistically significant resp.onse(sensitivity 76%, specificity 94.7%, positive predictive value 95%, negative predictive value 75%). These results suggest that cardiac surgeon could draw more benefits by intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography.

  • This paper describes a compartment dynamic model for evaluating the contamination level of kritium in agricultural plants exposed by accidentally released tritium. The present model uses a time-dependent growth equation of plant so that it can predict the effect of growth stage of plant during the exposure time. The model including atmosphere, soil and plant compartments is described by a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations, and is able to predict time-dependent concentrations of tritium in the compartments. To validate the model, a series of exposure experiments of HTO vapor on Chinese cabbage and radish was carried out at the different growth stage of each plant. At the end of exposure, the tissue free water(TFWT) and the organically bound tritium(OBT) were measured. The measured concentrations were agreed well with model predictions.

  • The deviation of measured pressures in pipeline networks from normal or reference pressures is useful information for judging the operation of the pipeline networks. A cost-effective monitoring of pipeline networks including a leak detection capability can be realized when transient pressure variation is accurately predicted using measured conditions at supply- and demand-sides of the networks. In this study, a pipeline network analysis program was developed based on one-dimensional flow equations for compressible fluids. The validity of the present analysis was demonstrated by simulating the flow in a straight pipeline and comparing the results with the previously reported ones. Pressure and flow rate transients in several simple city-gas pipeline networks were also analyzed to show the usefulness of the developed program.

  • The basic understanding of gas diffusion and technology to predict the diffusion phenomena are needed to prepare against a disaster of leakage of natural gas and to design better consistent and reliable gas supply system in enclosure. The experimental results of British Gas Technology Co. are used in present study as a reference of theoretical study using CFD. The present results of 2D CFD analysis for mass flow rate of nozzle release show good agreement with experimental results within 2.6 % error. 3D CFD analysis for the characteristics of natural gas diffusion in enclosure with various ventilation patterns also gives reasonable agreement with experimental results.

  • Likelihood analysis was used for the revision of release probability/frequency in chlorine Injection facilities used in chlorine process. Typically these facilities consist of pressure cylinder, vaporizer, pipeline, measuring equipment and safety equipment. This paper described the incident scenarios considered, likelihood analysis procedure and the selection and application of basic events and for failure rates of mechanical components. Human errors were also considered. The major objective of this paper is to estimate the likelihood of each determined incident scenarios. We estimated failure rates of mechanical components based on likelihood analysis procedure. Human errors were also considered. It was estimated to have $5.73{\times}10^{-5}\;Cl_2$ leak per year during the major $Cl_2$ handling process. The probability of failure in scrubber system was $4.11{\times}10^{-2}/demand$.

  • Rotating modulation collimator(RMC) is a remote sensing technique for a radiation source. This paper introduces an RMC system model and its image reconstruction algorithm based on Kowash's research. The reconstructed image can show the direction of a source. However, the distance to the source cannot be recovered. Moreover, the RMC image suffers from $180^{\circ}$ ambiguity. In this paper, we propose a distance estimation method using two RMCs together with a solution to the ambiguity. We also demonstrate its performance using simulated RMC data.

  • In this paper, a new three-dimensional nodal diffusion code which is based on the AFEN methodology is described and tested. The method expands the homogeneous flux within a node in ter-ms of eighteen analytic basis functions satisfying the diffusion equation at any point of the node. And the nodal coupling equations are derived such that nodal balance, current continuity and leakage balance within an infinitesimally small box around the edge are satisfied. To verify its accuracy, the code was applied to the well-known static LMW benchmark problem and a small core benchmark problem that has the same material properties as the three-dimensional IAEA benchmark problem and compared with two other codes (QUANDRY, VENTURE). The results show that the code provides good accuracy both in the power distribution and in the effective multiplication factor.

  • For the hydrogen economy system being tried starting with the 21st century, the fields that was not dealt with so far, such as the safety measure for large leakage accidents, the safety problem at infrastructures like a hydrogen station, the safety problem in terms of automobiles depending on introduction of hydrogen cars, the safety problem in a supply for homes like fuel cells, etc., are being deeply reviewed. In order to establish a safety control system, an essential prerequisite in using and commercializing hydrogen gas as an efficient energy source, it is necessary to conduct an analysis, such as analysis of hydrogen accident examples, clarification of physical mechanisms, qualitative and quantitative evaluation of safety, development of accident interception technologies, etc. This study prepared scenarios of hydrogen gas leakage that can happen at hydrogen stations, and predicted damage when hydrogen leaks by using PHAST for this.

  • Many burial sites were constructed to suppress the spread of foot and mouth disease during outbreak. Defected burial sites were removed when leachate leak is presumed and carcasses were moved to the circular storage tanks. However, carcasses were not decomposed possibly due to low water content, low microbial activities, and poor mixing. In this research, storage tank containing carcasses in it was modified to bioreactor to accelerate stabilization. Liquids with nutrients were added and circulated to maintain the optimum water content while extraneous microorganisms were augmented. Settlement was used as the primary index for assessing stabilization rate, and the consolidation theory was utilized to estimate the expected final settlement. 30% of carcasses is expected to be decomposed and removed from the storage tank for five years of bioreactor operation.
