'도서관및독서진흥법'은 '문고'를 도서관의 일반적인 목적과 기능을 수행하고는 있으나 도서관의 기준에 미달되는 규모의 독서시설이라고 정의하고 있다. 1960년 경주시 변두리 농촌인 탑동에 제1호 문고가 생긴 이래 40년이 넘는 현재(2003. 12. 기준) 전국적으로 2,500여개의 문고가 설치되어 있는데, 이들은 공공도서관에 접근하기 어려운 지역주민들이 손쉽게 접근할 수 있는 생활 속의 작은 독서공간으로 자리를 잡아가고 있다. 이번 호에서는 최근 문고 운영의 좋은 사례로 꼽히며 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있는 부천 지역의 공립문고들 중 2곳을 찾아가 보았다.

Being one of the municipality belonging to a large metropolitan city, there are areas with a special environment of rural characteristics that are different from general urban areas. Gijang-gun of Busan Metropolitan City is a good example. Although it maintains the highest level of the number of patrons per public library and the number of books per capita in Busan, and is also promoting various projects to strengthen the knowledge and cultural competitiveness, in Gijang-gun, a Complex Area where rural and urban areas coexist, most of the resources are concentrated in urban areas, and cultural facilities that provide public services are lacking in relatively few rural areas. In this regard, this research strives to enhance the vision and strategy of the Gijang-gun's public libraries, reflecting the characteristics and needs of the patrons as viewed through their urban-rural complex environment.

The purpose of this study is to induce the activation of public libraries in community through make use of public libraries as a plan for accomplishing regional informatization which based on regionalization and informatization. To acquire the twin goal of regional informatization and activation of public libraries, I propose a strategic plan which makes use of regional public libraries as an infrastructure of educating informatization and community-network concept. Especially those plans would cover recent background issues of super-national interest in rural welfare & development venture.

This study's purpose is to suggest ways to improve and revitalize public libraries' operations to reflect the Yangpyeong-gun community's characteristics. To this end, the Yangpyeong-gun region's characteristics and the current state of public library operation were analyzed, and a survey was conducted targeting Yangpyeong-gun residents (library users and nonusers). Additionally, interviews were conducted to investigate the library's operating status and limitations and librarians' perceptions of library revitalization plans. As a result of the analysis, in Yangpyeong-gun, improvement points such as library operation improvement and library accessibility improvement reflecting local community changes such as urban development, population change, manpower and collections expansion, complex cultural space strengthening, reading culture programs, and user services were derived.

Due to an inability to accommodate for the rapidly increasing number of printed materials, Korean academic libraries are facing serious space shortage problems. Very few academic institutions have the funds to expand existing libraries or construct new facilities in order to accommodate the influx of printed materials. Despite not having the luxury to create new space, many establishments continue to implement the open access system. Seeing that such a system is only user friendly when used in a spacious facility, the maintenance of the open access system is unreasonable. Only few libraries consider the space efficient closed access system which helps to resolve storage space shortage. In the current state of the problem, improving the efficiency to which books are stored in existing storage areas within a library facility is the only appropriate solution. Enacting methods to improve physical space utilization within a fixed volume library facility will undoubtedly diminish the space shortage issue at hand. In this article, several space efficiency improvement approaches are discussed. Methods of book storage plan re-layout (floor, plan, ceiling, height, bookshelf design), book arrangement possibilities, and the reduction of the physical volume of reserved materials are each examined.

Many various digital contents came out to our world owing to the advance of information and communication technologies. More rapidly the technologies of information and communication develop, more classes disadvantaged might appear so that it might incur society with distinction in getting information which is called digital divide. In this time, public library has to play important rules in dissolving the digital divide of our society. In this paper, we will not investigate only how much users of digital multimedia centers in the public library satisfy, but also what factors affect the satisfaction of the users significantly. Specially, we will analyze difference of the influence factors between urban and rural region so that we will propose strategy for operating the digital multimedia centers in the public library efficiently and effectively in order to dissolve the digital divide.

The main purpose of this study is to analyze construction of space through the investigation of the cases of school community library through Gangneung-si's life-learning project and the findings from the analysis could be summarized as below. Firstly, most space used for school community library has the size of two classes in school on average and locals use generally space for reference and learning at school community library. Secondly, the construction of space of school community library is categorized into one for book-returning, references, reading, group learning and information, and an audio-visual space is also used for group learning and reading. A space for book-returning has features based on the location of its entrance and a space for reading features stand-up and sitting-on space considering size and usability. And a space for group learning has the feature of space planning that makes it possible for local people to get library programs and seminars and a space for information shows its feature of space planning that uses the wall.
