  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to measure the level of activity possessed by the daily activities of the elderly. In addition, we attempted to compare the differences in the categories of daily activities. Methods : We used K-ACS to evaluate 30 older people who engaged in economic activity living in community, 30 older people who did not have economic activity living in community, and 30 older people living in facility. We compared the level of activity retention. Results : There was a significant difference of level of activity retention according to the daily activity category of the subjects(p <.001). There was a difference in the instrumental activities according to the category of each activity, while the three groups showed similar patterns in leisure activities and social activities. In particular, all three groups were most likely to rest and watch television in the leisure activities, so the leisure activities of the elderly in Korea were very limited. Among the general characteristics, it was analyzed that there was a correlation between the activity, the marital status, the religion and the cognitive level. Conclusion : According to the daily activities category of the elderly, there was a difference in level of activity retention and the characteristics of daily activities correlated with the activities of the elderly. This suggests that it may be a basic data for establishing a client - centered intervention plan by considering the characteristics affecting daily living and level of activity retention of the elderly in the occupational therapy.

  • Current discussions on productive aging are going towards the direction to sustain a social productivity and lessen a social burden, and this becomes distinct as it gives a strong value to the activity and independence of older people. This study highlights complex situations of productive activities in the group of older people by analyzing the survey of Among the productive activities of older people, two areas of activities - paid labor and social support - were interpreted differently according to their economic stability, spontaneity and family relations. This difference becomes more remarkable in the analysis on life satisfaction of older people. • Objective : The aim of this study was to compare the sociodemographic characteristics, depression, quality of life, and unmet medical need in elders with and without limitation of activity by aging or dementia. Method : The data were used for raw data of seventh national health and nutrition examination survey (2016). We compared sociodemographic characteristics, depression, quality of life, and unmet medical needs between elders with limitation of activity by aging or dementia (n = 32) and elders without limitation of activity (n = 1201). Result : Elders with limitation of activity were significantly older than elders without limitation of activity (p<.001), income was lower (p<.05) and married status had more bereavement (p<.001). The elders with limitation of activity had higher depression (p<.001) and lower quality of life (p<.001) than elders without limitation of activity. Unmet medical need was greater than elders without limitation of activity (p<.001). Conclusion : Elders with limitation of activity showed that they did not receive enough medical services than elders without limitation of activity. These results suggest that the welfare system for the health care of population with aging or dementia needs to be improved.

  • Activity theory explains that the old people participate in social activity as a role-substitute from loss of roles given by work and family. It is possible to enhance their life satisfaction through these activities. Based on this activity theory, this study aims at explore the role substitute of voluntary activities and to analysis whether volunteering commitment has an effect on life satisfaction. Data were collected by using survey questionnaires to the elderly over 55 years old who participated in voluntary activity at 25 Volunteer Centers in Seoul. The Activity theory was operationalized by job or joblessness, family type, achievement type obtained through voluntary activity The results are as follows. (1) Job or joblessness has effect on the activity frequence and activity time. (2) Social achievement after voluntary activity has effect on the duration only (3) And the family type did not have any effect. These three variables of activity theory do not have an effect on life satisfaction. The elderly volunteering commitment was explained by variables other than activity theory such as reward, health, education, sex. And the elderly volunteer's life satisfaction were affected by the family types and their economic status. These results imply that the Korean elderly voluntary activities could be expained partially by Activity theory. Also for these elder volunteers's life satisfaction, qualitative respects such as achievements through voluntary activity, and concerns and support by agencies are more important than the time they imput in voluntary activities.

  • The purpose of study is to compare the level of participation of the elderly people in the activity of production between Korea and Canada and to identify the factors related to the participation of the elderly people in the activity of production between Korea and Canada. In order to conduct a comparative culture study two data sets were used; one was the 1999 Survey of Time Use collected by Korean Statistics Office and the other was 1998 Survey of Time Use collected by Canadian Statistics Office. Many countries have been collected a time use survey and used to study labor, welfare, and culture. Total number of 17,730 Korean and 2,729 Canadian between 55 and 84 were included to analyze the data. It is clear from the results that older people engage in various productive behaviors, particularly when the definition of activities is broadened to include unpaid work. It is also clear the overall productive contributions are higher among older Koreans than among older Canadians. While the focus in this study has been strictly on productive activities, the aging well literature suggests that the ability to remain independent in later life is enhanced through continued engagement in productive activities. It is thus critical that we better understand the nature of later-life activities and in particular the wide-ranging contributions made by older people. This is an important area of further exploration.

  • Objectives : This study was to compare the level of activity participation(instrumental activities, leisure activities, and social activities of living) and quality of life for elderly people with and without stroke, and to analyze the correlation between the level of activity participation and quality of life in their scores on measures. Methods : The Korean Activity Card Sort(K-ACS) was conducted among 25 elderly people with stroke and 25 elderly people without stroke living in Busan, and their level of activity participation and quality of life were evaluated using the The Medical Outcome Study 36-item Short Form Health Survey(SF-36). Results : Elderly people with and without stroke both showed a significant difference in the retained level of activity participation, instrumental activities of daily living, leisure activities, social activities, and the SF-36 score. The scores of the elderly people with stroke for the retained level of activity participation and instrumental activities of daily living in the Korean Activity Card Sort had a significant correlation with the SF-36 score, whereas leisure activities and social activities did not show a significant correlation with the SF-36 score. Among the elderly people without stroke, there was a significant correlation between scores for the retained level of activity participation, leisure activities, and social activities of living in the Korean Activity Card Sort and the SF-36 score, but there was no significant correlation between instrumental activities of daily living and the SF-36 score. Conclusion : The level of activity participation and quality of life could be considered to correlate with one another, and an intervention to improve the activity participation of elderly people with stroke would help to enhance their quality of life.
