The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of death education on attitudes toward death and depression for older adults. A death education program consisted of needs of death education, alternatives for dignity on death, not ending death(I, II), hospice(I, II), and 9 patterns of death(I, II, III). Participants in this study were 38 older adults aged 60 years or older. Attitudes toward death and depression scales for Korean elders were employed. The data collection and intervention were performed from January to June, 2008. The subjects participated in a death education program for 1 time per week during 10 weeks. The data were analyzed with t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS/Window 14.0. After the intervention, the subjects showed significant difference in attitudes toward death compared to that of pre-intervention. The subjects after the intervention showed no statistical differences in change of depression compared to that of pre-intervention. Also, attitudes toward death were negatively related with depression both before and after interventions, but the change of relation was not significant. The findings of this study contributed to extend the base of program developments on death education enhancing attitudes toward death among Korean older adults.
The purpose of this study is to examine changes in university students' perception toward the aged and the aged welfare after the volunteer program of home care for the elderly. We classified students who are majoring in social welfare in a university into two groups according to the participation of the volunteer program: the participation group (N=34), and the non-participation group (N=38). Their attitudes towards the elderly were measured by the semantic differential scale developed by Sanders et al. The respect for the elderly, and the knowledge and interest about the aged welfare were examined by 4-point Likert scales. The result of this study shows the effect of the volunteer program, as follows: ① There was no differences between the participation and non-participation groups on the baseline except the interest about the elderly welfare: the participation group had significantly more interest than the non-participation group. ② The participation group had significantly more positive attitudes toward the elderly and higher respect for the elderly after participating the program. However, there were no changes among the non-participation group. As a conclusion, we suggest that the volunteer program for the elderly might affect young people's attitudes toward the elderly.
The purpose of this study is to measure the social workers' knowledge of aging and attitude toward the elderly in Korea, and to find out the variables that may influence the social workers' attitude. One hundred and eighty three social workers working in a community welfare center were given the questionnaire containing the Kyung San Facts on Aging Quiz to measure the level of knowledge of aging and Yoon(1988)'s scale to find the direction of attitude toward the elderly. The results of this study are analyzed as follows: (1) The social workers' level of knowledge of aging was 65.3%, which was higher than America nurses(62.0%) and Korean nurses(65.0%). (2) The mean of social workers' attitude toward the elderly 65.5 points, which was more positive than nurses in other studies. (3) The social workers' levels of knowledge of aging(p<0.001), personal experience with the elderly(p<0.001), and volunteer experience for the elderly(p<0.05) influence the social workers' attitude toward the elderly. Based on the research results, implications for the future practice are discussed, and suggestions for making social workers' attitude toward the elderly more positive are also included.
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the SOC strategies of college students taking courses related to lifelong educator on their attitude toward the elderly and successful aging in an effort to provide information on how to teach students to take a favorable attitude toward the elderly and acquire knowledge on the right aging. The major findings of the study were as follows: The male students made more use of an arbitrary selection strategy than the female students, and a loss-based selection strategy was more prevailing among the female students. There were no differences in attitude toward the elderly and awareness of successful aging according to gender and the presence or absence of religion. Aging attitude was under the statistically significant positive influence of a compensation strategy, and a loss-based selection strategy had a statistically significant positive impact on awareness of successful aging. Given the findings of the study, a wide variety of programs and contents that are related to lifelong educator and can be of use for college students who make a preparation for successful aging should be developed and provided in consideration of the variables that affect attitude toward the elderly and successful aging.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify on the attitudes toward the life support care among elderly people using Q methodology. Methods: Thirty-nine elderly people classified 34 selected Q statements into a shape of normal distribution using a 9 point scale. The obtained data were analyzed by using a PQ Method PC program. Results: Principal component analysis identified 4 types of the attitudes toward the life support care among elderly people. Type I is "Situational & Self-determination linear type", type II is "Destiny & Life support care denied type", type III is "Avoidant & Family decision emphasis type" and type IV is "Respect for life & life support care approved type". This study examined adolescents'behavioral attitude and perception toward the elderly relating to the experiences with their grandparents. In addition, the study explored the relations between perception and behavioral attitude toward the elderly The numbers of sample are 1,477 adolescents who were 5th grade of elementary, 2nd grade of both middle and high school. They answered three different questionnaires relating to perception and behavioral attitude toward the elderly including positive perception, image and perspectives toward the elderly; behavioral attitude toward the elderly; and biases toward the elderly. Adolescents'relationship with their grandparents was assessed by questioning about present and past experiences of co-living with grandparents, living distance to grandparents, frequencies of visits and phone calls between grandparents and adolescents, and others. The results of the study are summarized as follows: ( 1 ) Adolescents'behavioral attitude and perception toward the elderly tends to be positive, (2) Adolescents'sex and grades significantly affect the perception and behavioral attitude toward the elderly, (3) The closer to the grandparents adolescents are, the more positive attitude and perception to the elderly; (4) Adolescents'perception better explains their behavioral attitude toward the elderly.
Background: The elderly population aged 65 or older in Korea is expected to continue to increase to 18.4% in 2023, and to enter a super-aged society at 20.6% in 2025. In clinical practice, the elderly discrimination of dental hygienists may experience difficulties during dental hygiene treatment due to an increase in the number of elderly patients due to aging, which can lead to maladjustment to work and turnover, so education on the understanding of the elderly is essential for students in the Department of Dentistry, who are prospective dental hygienists. Accordingly, a study was conducted to prepare for a super-aged society by studying the relationship between elderly discrimination and the knowledge and attitudes of the elderly, and to change the curriculum of universities and develop programs related to the elderly. Method: 204 students enrolled in the Department of Dentistry in D area were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. The subject's geriatric discrimination, knowledge about the elderly, and attitude toward the elderly were calculated as the mean and standard deviation. T-test and one-way ANOVA were performed to verify the difference in geriatric discrimination according to the general characteristics of the subject, with a Scheffe' test applied for post-hoc analysis. Correlation analysis was conducted on the subject's geriatric discrimination, knowledge about the elderly, and attitudes toward the elderly. Results: Geriatrics scored 2.03±0.36 out of 4. Knowledge about the elderly was categorized as follows: physical domain 0.57±0.15; social domain 0.36±0.17; and psychological domain 0.35±0.20. The attitude toward the elderly was 3.86±0.27. Knowledge of the elderly averaged 11.27±3.30 points out of 25. The question with the highest percentage of correct answers to knowledge about the elderly was 'physical strength tends to decrease with age', which was 93.1%. The attitude toward the elderly according to the general characteristics of the study subjects showed significant differences in gender (p=0.040), age (p=0.026), and life experience with grandparents (p=0.001). The elderly discrimination of the study subjects showed a negative correlation in both attitude and knowledge toward the elderly, and among the elderly discrimination, there was a high positive correlation with regard to emotional avoidance (r=.892, p<0.001). Conclusion: College students are the leading players in caring for the elderly and are directly affected by aging social problems. Therefore, it is considered necessary to apply various programs in the state, society, and educational institutions to avoid negative prejudices that lead to positive thinking and discrimination against the elderly.

The elder abuse draws an increasing concern as the elderly population grows rapidly, and increasing demands to provide long-term care to the impaired elderly are imposed on the families. This study compares Korean American elders' and their adult children's perceptions of possible elder abuse under care-giving situation, and related help-seeking behaviors using five scenarios developed by the author. The subjects consist of ten elders and their ten adult children including daughters-in-law who live in Los Angeles, the USA. Content analysis reveals very similar help-seeking behaviors of the two generations within the family despite the substanally generational difference towards the perceptions of elder abuse under care-giving situation. Mann-Whitney test shows a significant difference in the perceptions of elder abuse between the elderly and their adult children. It means that the elderly are substantially less likely to perceive a given situation as abusive than their adult children would. But there is no significant difference between the elderly and their adult children in their intended use of formal sources of help. Implications for gerontological social work practice and program development are discussed.
