  • This study aimed to identify the impact of human rights violations on elderly discrimination, focusing on the mediating effect of elderly-related experiences. After conducting a two-month survey of 143 dental students in some parts of Busan from September 4, 2020, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to find out the mediating effects of elderly-related experiences using the SPSS 26.0 program. Dental hygiene students' perception of infringement on elderly human rights was shown to be significant in elderly discrimination(r=-.310) and elderly-related experiences(.185), indicating that elderly-related experiences were partially mediated in elderly human rights infringement and elderly discrimination. • This study was conducted to identify the factors influencing health-related quality of life of urinary incontinent elderly women. The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) was used as baseline data to evaluate how activity limitation, depression experience and subjective health perception influence the health-related quality of life of urinary incontinent elderly women. The urinary incontinent elderly women differed significantly in terms of activity limitation, depression experience, subjective health perception influence and health-related quality of life compared to elderly women without incontinence. In contrast, income and education were not correlated with either of the aforementioned groups. The subjective health perception was identified as the only factor influencing the health-related quality of life of urinary incontinent elderly women. The results of this study will serve as basic data for positive treatment promotion and development of assessment programs for incontinence patients who recognize incontinence symptoms as part of the aging process and are therefore unwilling to receive care.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine everyday emotional experience of urban elderly in Korea. Specifically, this study explores gender differences in the effect of place/location of activity and companionship on the daily emotional experience. Data were collected from 148 urban elderly (men=76, women=72) in Seoul, using Experience Sampling Method(ESM). The unit of analysis was the self-report and in total 5,530 self-reports were provided. The statistical methods used for the data analyses were descriptive statistics, t-test, χ2 verification, and ANOVA. The major findings are as follows. First, the elderly in Korea spend a quite substantial portion of their time at home, and they spend the largest share of their time in company with their spouse. Second, women report higher intensity of stress and irritation than men in terms of overall emotional experience. Third, the effect of activity location and companionship on emotional experience turned out to be different depending on gender. Emotional experience of daily lives and overall quality of life are shown to be inter-related. Based on these findings, this study provides a significant implication that situational contexts of experience should be considered in order to understand the daily emotional experience of the contemporary Korean elderly.

  • The present study aimed to investigate the rate of unmet healthcare needs for elderly over the age of 65 years, as well as analyze the relevance between employment status and unmet healthcare needs due to financial reasons. With regard to the study method, a logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the correlation between employment status and unmet healthcare needs due to financial reasons, targeting 5,528 subjects over the age of 65 years. The results showed that the rate of unmet healthcare needs was 18.9%, in which the rate of unmet healthcare needs due to financial reason was 8.1%. The rate of unmet health needs was higher for temporary workers(ORs=1.75) than for retirement workers. However, the rate of unmet healthcare needs caused by financial reasons was higher among day workers(ORs=1.92). In conclusion, in order to prevent unmet healthcare needs for senior Korean patients, it is necessary to not only improve the income security system for the elderly, but also improve the occupational form and level of income of these economically active citizens, considering the increase in average life expectancy. Moreover, it is also necessary to reinforce health insurance coverage systems for settling medical expenses.
