  • This paper reports a design improvement study to solve the stoppage phenomenon caused by the launch-support device applied to K105A1. The K105A1 is a weapon system equipped with an old 105 mm towed howitzer in a wheeled vehicle, which provides superior maneuverability compared to track equipment. The launch support device serves to withstand fire impact and load. In this way, this device is fixed firmly to the ground in preparation for the shooting mission and is responsible for the critical performance, such as fixing the position of the vehicle. On the other hand, during the field test, a temporary stoppage of the launch support occurred, which caused a problem of not being fixed to the ground. To solve this problem, the cause of failure was analyzed by a replay test and parts inspection. In addition, the operating concept, method, and design were analyzed to derive the cause and solve the problem by changing the parts design. Finally, the performance and firing missions were performed normally by applying the changed design to K105A1. The performance stability and reliability of the launch support device were confirmed, which are expected to be of great assistance in the development of military equipment in the future.

  • In this study, the proper mixing ratio of fly ash to bottom ash is evaluated and bearing capacity of this mixed ash is examined for use of highway embankment and subgrade materials in large quantities. Independently of the mixing ratio of fly ash to bottom ash or the method of compaction test, maximum dry density ${\gamma}_{dmax}$ and CBR value of anthracite mixed coal ash is greater than that of bituminous mixed coal ash. The mixed ashes to contain more fly ash than that of which the ratio of fly ash to bottom ash is 8 : 2, are slaked readily when the water contents of compaction are greater than optimum moisture content O.M.C. The proper mixing ratios of fly ash to bottom ash are about 5 : 5 to 6 : 4. Coal ashes mixed with these ratios exhibit proper physical and geotechnical properties for use of highway embankment and subgrade materials, and enable coal ashes to be used in large quantities.

  • This paper presents a theoretical approach for estimation of CBR-value of subbase course and subgrade using a portable pavement dynamic cone penetrometer(PDCP). The PDCP used in this paper was based on a design from South Africa and extensive studies by Kleyn(1982) and more recently by Liveneh and Ishai(1987) and Chua(1988). To date, California Bearing Ratio[CBR] value was studied mainly for application of pavement structural design. This study was initiated to develop a method of obtaining the in situ CBR-values of subbase and subgrade for the structural evaluation of pavements in the swift and inexpensive manner. PDCP tests were implemented at 20 different kinds of soil samples in the lab and test results were analysed by a theoretical approach introduced. The procedure presented provides acceptable and promising results.

  • The joints in the jointed concrete pavement provide a control against transverse or longitudinal cracking at slab, which may be caused by temperature or moisture variation during or after hydration. Without control of cracking, random cracks cause more serious distresses and result in structural or functional failure of pavement system. However, joints nay cause distresses due to its inherent weakness in structural integrity. Thus, the evaluation at joint is very important. and the joint-related distresses should be evaluated reasonably for economic rehabilitation. The purpose of this paper was to develop an evaluation system at joints of jointed concrete pavement using finite element analysis program, ILLI-SLAB, and nondestructive testing device. FWD. To develop an evaluation system for JCP, a sensitivity analysis was performed using ILLI-SLAB program with a selected variables which might affect fairly to on the performance of transverse joints. The most significant variables were selected from precise analysis. An evaluation charts were made for jointed concrete pavement by adopting the field FWD data. It was concluded that the variables which most significantly affect to pavement deflections are the modulus of subgrade reaction(K) and the modulus of dowel/concrete interaction(G), and limiting criteria on the performance of joints at JCP are 300pci. 500,000 lb/in. respectively. Using these variables and FWD test, a charts of load transfer ratio versus surface deflection at joints were made in order to evaluate the performance of JCP. Practically, Chungbu highway was evaluated by these evaluation charts and FWD field data for jointed concrete pavement. For Chungbu highway, only one joint showed smaller value than limiting criterion of the modulus of dowel/concrete interaction(G). The rest joints showed larger values than limiting criteria of the modulus of subgrade reaction(K) and the modulus of dowel/concrete interaction(G).

  • To evaluate the compaction in the domestic construction sites, mainly(PBT) plate bearing test is used. PBT may result in over-estimation in the well-compacted area. Estimation method for the degree of compaction was developed from the penetration index of the surface by cone penetration. The developed system is easily attached to the mobile transportation and directly can acquire the degree of compaction.

  • The infrastructure of flexible pavement is composed of aggregate subbase, anti-frost layer, and subgrade. In particular, the subgrade performance is affected by climates such as frost action and precipitation. The method of TDR(Time Domain Reflectometry) sensors to measure moisture contents in subgrade layer has been used in the research. Due to the TDR method using dielectric permitivity of soil and water, the sensors can be affected by the low subgrade temperatures. The air temperatures frequently drops below $-20^{\circ}C$ in the winter in Korea. As a result, it is necessary to estimate the accuracy of the TDR moisture sensors in the range of below zero temperatures. In this study, the subgrade temperatures of lower than $-2^{\circ}C$ were extended to evaluate temperature sensitivity of the TDR moisture sensors. The test results revealed that the moisture contents around the sensors were reduced while those of the upper part of specimen showed a tendency to increase as the specimen surface temperature drops below zero under the volumetric moisture contents(VMC) of 20% and 30%. However, the impact of temperature on the function of the sensor at lower water contents was found to be negligible if any.

  • In this study, recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) were treated in a 5-kg-scale prototype reactor with carbon dioxide (CO2) to enhance their material quality and geotechnical performance. The aggregate crushing value (ACV) and California bearing ratio (CBR) were measured on untreated RCAs and CO2-treated RCAs. After CO2 treatment, the ACV decreased from 35.6% to 33.2%, and the CBR increased from 97.5% to 102.4%. The CO2 treatment caused a reduction of fine particle generation and an increase in bearing capacity through carbonation. When CO2 treatment was performed with mechanical agitation, which provided additional enhancement in mechanical quality, the ACV was reduced further to 30.3%, and the CBR increased to 137.7%. If upscaled effectively, the proposed CO2 treatment technique would be an effective method to reduce carbon emissions in construction industries.

  • The objectives of this paper are to develop the structural condition evaluation technique using Falling Weight Deflectometer deflections and propose the structural condition criteria for asphalt pavements. To figure out correlation between surface deflections and critical pavement responses, the synthetic database has been established using the finite element pavement structural analysis program. A regression approach was adopted to develop the pavement response model that can be used to compute the stresses and strains within pavement structure using the FWD deflections. Based on the pavement response model, the procedure for assessing the structural condition of pavement layers was proposed in this study. To validate the condition evaluation procedure for asphalt pavements, the FWD test, dynamic cone penetrometer test, and repeated triaxial compression test were conducted on 11 sections of national highway and 8 sections of local road. Test results indicate that the tensile strain at the bottom of AC layer and AC elastic modulus were good indicators for estimating the stiffness characteristics of AC layer. For subbase layer, the BDI value and compressive strain on top of the subbase layer were appropriate to predict the structural capacity of subbase layer. The BCI value and compressive strain on top of the subgrade were found to be good indicators for evaluating the structural condition of the subgrade. The evaluation criteria for structural condition in asphalt pavements was also proposed in this paper.

  • The current study developed light-weighted mixed soil that can solve problems related with soft soil such as ground subsidence, sliding and lateral displacement of ground. By reducing weight of reclaimed soil through mixing phosphogypsum and recycled EPS beads with the weathered granite soil. A series of geotechnical laboratory tests including physical index test, compaction test, CBR test, and direct shear test were performed and engineering properties were reviewed in order to assess applicability of the light-weighted mixed soil for roads and abutment and various back-filling materials at the reclamation area. Based on the laboratory test results, it was found that the maximum dry unit weight of the light-weighted soil ranges $14.32{\sim}15.79kN/m^3$ and the optimum water content ranges 21.91~24.23%, which means there is 11~19.3% weight decrease effect when comparing with general weathered granite soil. Also it was found that the corrected CBR value ranges 10.4~18.4% satisfying the domestic regulations on road subgrade and back-filling material. In addition, as for shear strength parameter, cohesion ranges 10.79~18.64 kPa and internal frictional angle ranges $35.4{\sim}37.2^{\circ}$, which are similar with those of general construction soil and back-filling material used in Korea. So it can be concluded that light-weighted mixed soil with phosphogypsum can be used effectively for soft reclamation ground as actual filling material and back-filling material. From the current study, it was found that light-weighted mixed soil with phosphogypsum has not only weight reduction effect, but also has no special problems in shear strength and bearing capacity. Therefore, it is expected that phosphogypsum can be recycled in bulk as road subgrade and back-filling material at the reclamation area.
