  • A road surface temperature prediction model (UM-Road) using input data of the Unified Model (UM) output and road physical properties is developed and verified with the use of the observed data at road weather information system. The UM outputs of air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, downward shortwave radiation, net longwave radiation, precipitation and the road properties such as slope angles, albedo, thermal conductivity, heat capacity at maximum 7 depth are used. The net radiation is computed by a surface radiation energy balance, the ground heat flux at surface is estimated by a surface energy balance based on the Monin-Obukhov similarity, the ground heat transfer process is applied to predict the road surface temperature. If the observed road surface temperature exists, the simulated road surface temperature is corrected by mean bias during the last 24 hours. The developed UM-Road is verified using the observed data at road side for the period from 21 to 31 March 2013. It is found that the UM-Road simulates the diurnal trend and peak values of road surface temperature very well and the 50% (90%) of temperature difference lies within ${\pm}1.5^{\circ}C$ (${\pm}2.5^{\circ}C$) except for precipitation case.

  • PURPOSES: This study suggests a specific methodology for the prediction of road surface temperature using vehicular ambient temperature sensors. In addition, four kind of models is developed based on machine learning algorithms. METHODS : Thermal Mapping System is employed to collect road surface and vehicular ambient temperature data on the defined survey route in 2015 and 2016 year, respectively. For modelling, all types of collected temperature data should be classified into response and predictor before applying a machine learning tool such as MATLAB. In this study, collected road surface temperature are considered as response while vehicular ambient temperatures defied as predictor. Through data learning using machine learning tool, models were developed and finally compared predicted and actual temperature based on average absolute error. RESULTS : According to comparison results, model enables to estimate actual road surface temperature variation pattern along the roads very well. Model III is slightly better than the rest of models in terms of estimation performance. CONCLUSIONS : When correlation between response and predictor is high, when plenty of historical data exists, and when a lot of predictors are available, estimation performance of would be much better.

  • Previous studies have considered the permeability and construction method of paving materials, thus focusing on more practical issues rather than basic research of their properties. The present study investigated the possibility of using an elastic paving material having lesser thickness in the resurfacing of existing concrete or asphalt paved areas while satisfying the necessary conditions of resilience and water permeability. An alternative to complete reconstruction would reduce the amount of resource wastage and environmental pollution, as well as the cost of projects. This study investigated five variants of thickness (10, 13, 15, 20, 25mm) and three mixing ratios of binder to rubber chips (20, 22.5, 25%) to ascertain the ideal basic properties of each. The obtained test data revealed that a minimum thickness(10~25mm) of the elastic paving materials can be determined from a qualitative point of view, and alternatives should be provided to improve the durability of the paving material on account of the temperature sensitivity.

  • The chassis of the Korean light tactical vehicle adopts a frame-on-body structure that uses lightweight design technology in terms of equipment operating characteristics. Military vehicles are operated in much harsher conditions compared to civilian vehicles, including mountainous terrain, especially steep slopes. Due to this characteristic, frame-welded cracks were found on some military vehicles. Therefore, in this paper, road damage analysis was conducted by identifying various roads including the military unit's road. The result confirmed that the operating environment of some military units' tactical road was much harsher than the endurance road test condition. A solution was derived through defect analysis, design review, and actual vehicle driving test. This study can be used as a reference by suggesting the development direction for the durability test of a new vehicle.

  • The road safety depend on many road factors like vertical alignment, horizontal alignment and road cross section angle. These data are hardly to get with drawings, and the real data are differ from drawings because of road pavement overlay, etc. To get these data, so many time and cost are needed, moreover it is dangerous work in heavy traffic road. In this study we obtained the road safety data with RoSSAV(Road Safety Survey & Analysis Vehicle) of Korea Institute of Construction Technology in accordance with traffic flow, and make analysis of road safety with the vertical alignment, horizontal alignment and road cross section angle data. We derived the safety improvement method in Young-dong accident prone spot and described detail method in this paper.

  • Black ices on road surfaces in winter tend to cause severe and terrible accidents. It is very difficult to detect black ice events in advance due to their localities as well as sensitivities to surface and upper meteorological variables. This study develops a methodology to detect the road sections vulnerable to black ice with the use of road surface temperature data obtained from a mobile road weather observation vehicle. The 7 experiments were conducted on the route from Nam-Wonju IC to Nam-Andong IC (132.5 km) on the Jungang Expressway during the period from December 2020 to February 2021. Firstly, temporal road surface temperature data were converted to the spatial data with a 50 m resolution. Then, the spatial road surface temperature was normalized with zero mean and one standard deviation using a simple normalization, a linear de-trend and normalization, and a low-pass filter and normalization. The resulting road thermal map was calculated in terms of road surface temperature differences. A road ice index was suggested using the normalized road temperatures and their horizontal differences. Road sections vulnerable to black ice were derived from road ice indices and verified with respect to road geometry and sky view, etc. It was found that black ice could occur not only over bridges, but also roads with a low sky view factor. These results are expected to be applicable to the alarm service for black ice to drivers.

  • An intensive observing period (IOP) of heatwaves in the urban region of Seoul in the summer of 2023 was carried out to understand the changes in air temperature and road temperature induced by environmental conditions. The temperature observed at eight points with different urban environmental conditions was compared with the temperature by the KMA/AWS to analyze the characteristics of change in air temperature by height and the change in road temperature according to environmental conditions and road sprinkler. The comparison of the average temperature observed in different urban environmental conditions with the temperature observed at KMA/AWS showed that the air temperature in asphalt and open space sites was 0.7 to 2.3℃ higher and that the one in bus stops was 0.9 to 2.3℃ higher. In terms of temperature deviations depending on residential type, the temperature in highly populated areas was about 0.1 to 0.8℃ higher than that of apartment complexes. In addition, regardless of the size of a park, the temperature in the park was lower than the temperature in dense housing areas and apartment complexes. In asphalt and residential areas, the road temperature was higher than the temperature at a height of 150 cm, Conversely, road temperature was lower than air temperature in a shaded shelter and large park. In addition, after spraying a surface road, the road temperature immediately dropped by about 3 to 4℃; however, after about 20 minutes, it rose again to the previous road temperature. This change in road temperature appeared only for the temperature of 30 cm height.

  • Fine-size exposed aggregate portland cement concrete pavements (FEACP) have surface texture of exposed aggregate by removing upper 2$\sim$3mm mortar of surface of which curing is delayed by using delay-setting agent. FEACPs have advantages of maintaining low-noise and adequate skid-resistance level during the performance period than general portland cement concrete pavements. It is necessary to ensure the durability environmental loading to prevent unexpected distress during the service life of FEACP. In the process of curing, volume change accompanied change in by moisture and temperature could be an important cause of crack in concrete to construct for successful FEACP, The use of chloride containing deicer may accelerate defects of concrete pavement, such as crack and scaling. This study aim to evaluate environmental loading resistance of FEACP, based on the estimation of shrinkage-crack-control-capability by moisture evaporation and scaling by deicer in freeze-thaw reaction.

  • A bicycle is different from vehicles in the structure that a rider is fully exposed to the surrounding environment. Therefore, it needs to make use of prior information about local weather, air quality, trail road condition. Moreover, since it depends on human power for moving, it should acquire route property such as hill slope, winding, and road surface to improve its efficiency in everyday use. Recent mobile applications which are to be used during bicycle riding let us aware of the necessity of development of intelligent bicycles. This study aims to develop a riding state (up-hill, down-hill, accelerating, braking) recognition algorithm using a low-power wrist watch type embedded system which has 3-axis accelerometer and wireless communication capability. The developed algorithm was applied to 19 experimental riding data and showed more than 95% of correct recognition over 83.3% of the total dataset. The altitude and temperature sensor also in the embedded system mounted on the bicycle is being used to improve the accuracy of the algorithm. The developed riding state recognition algorithm is expected to be a platform technology for intelligent bicycle interface system.

  • The cracks in the pavements result from drying shrinkage, temperature change, repeated traffic loadings and so on. The reduction of soil support, spatting and many local failures are caused by water and incompressible foreign materials infiltrated into the cracks. In order to reduce this kind of problems the crack width must be controlled and managed by the accurate measurement. The current method is a visual survey using a microscope, which requires traffic blocking. The purpose of this study is to find the best condition to measure accurate crack width using automated pavement condition survey equipment running at the similar speed as other vehicles. In this study pavement surfaces are filmed on an enlarged scale by the camera with a zoom lens, and then the proper focal distance is determined according to the crack width through a pilot survey. The conditions for measurement of the accurate crack width using the image processing technique are suggested by comparing crack widths surveyed using a microscope in the field with those computed by various factors in the image processing program, STADI-2. In conclusion, the camera with a focal distance of 75m could detect crack range of 0.5mm$\sim$1.2mm In width with an accuracy of 80% for CRCP. The camera with a focal distance of 12.5mm could detect crack range of 1.8mm$\sim$3.3mm in width with an accuracy of 90% for asphalt pavement.
