  • The purpose of this study is to find out how the level of religious activity and participation in religious activities affect the satisfaction of the lives of the elderly. To this end, based on the 20th data of the labor panel survey, 3,261 people aged 65 or older were analyzed for technical statistics, average differences, and regression analysis. The research results are as follows. First, the existence of religion did not have a statistically significant effect on the satisfaction of the elderly's life. Second, the level of participation in religious activities was shown to have a statistically significant effect on the satisfaction of senior citizens' lives. In other words, the older people actively participate in religious activities, the more satisfied they were with Third, by type of religion, it was found that the Christian elderly had a statistically higher level of satisfaction in life than the Buddhist elderly. Based on these results, implications were drawn and policy suggestions were made.

  • This study aimed to develop the standardized contents and methods for preventing sexual harassment for hight school students preparing for employment after graduation. Delphi methodology was used with 30 experts. Three-round Delphi surveys were analyzed using Kendall's coefficient of concordance W analysis, appropriateness for reliability of consensus opinion. Data were analyzed respectively by descriptive statistics using SPSS Win version 20.0. Results of this study showed that standardized contents were classified with 3 domains and 83 contents, then 46 contents were selected from Kendall's W analysis and weight rank. Finally, 37 contents have taken as standards contents for prevention education. If high school students are educated with systematic standardized education before employment, it will be prevented sexual harassment in the workplace after graduation.

  • Using Seoul Welfare Panel Study, this research examines regional differentials in income and asset between Gangnam households and Non-Gangnam households in Seoul. Applying the Oaxaca decomposition method, it also decomposes factors associated with the differentials into explained and unexplained components. Results show that average monthly income is about 4 million won for Gangnam households and 3.2 million won for Non-Gangnam households. The explained component accounts for most of the income differential, which mainly originates from differences in the distributions of individual and household characteristics associated with the monthly income. The net asset differential between the two regions is much greater than the income differential. The net asset is about 460 million won for Gangnam households and approximately 280 million won for Non-Gangnam households. Most of the net asset differential is remained unexplained after controlling for covariates which measure demographic characteristics of householders and various features of labor market in which household members are employeed. It implies that other factors such as inter-generational transfers of wealth may play a significant role in creating the net asset differential.

  • This study was purposed to examine the effect of the parental care burden on the labor force participation of the middle aged and older women. For this, this study used 2,125 samples aged from 50 to 70 years old that were extracted from 1st and 2nd wave of the Korean Retirement and Income Study(KReIS). In order to examine the causal relationship between two variables, Generalized Estimating Equation(GEE) and Multi-nominal Regression analysis were performed. The results showed that there was a positive effect of the parental care burden on the labor force participation of the middle aged and older women. However, this effect was limited only to the employment to the unpaid family workers. In addition, the effect was varied according to the level of caring time to the old parents. Based on that, several policy and practical implications were suggested.

  • This study investigated the patterns of transition of consumption patterns in Korean households in 2010 and 2017, and the impact of the life cycle on the transition of consumption patterns between the two time points. Using information on 4,717 households from the 2010 and 2017 data of the Korean Labor Panel Survey, we examined the effect of the family life cycle on changes in consumption patterns. The results of the latent transition analysis on the change in consumption type showed that the change in consumption type between the two points of time at the household level was relatively active. The logistic regression models reported that the transition of consumption type varies depending on the life cycle, such as changes in marital status, birth and independence of children. These results provide the implication that it is necessary to consider from the perspective of the family life course how the transition between their consumption types occurs when the government establishes consumption policies and companies set marketing target groups.

  • The objectives of this paper are to analyze the effect of government R&D expenditure on employment in the Korean manufacturing sector in which employment is rapidly declining. According to the results of our empirical analysis, government R&D expenditure decreases the level of employment in Korean manufacturing sector in short term period, but it has positive effect on employment by compensation effect in the middle and long term period. Second, the effect of private R&D expenditure on job creation is three times larger than that of government R&D expenditure. Third, costs of labor and capital has negative effect on employment. This study is believed to help understanding the relation between R&D expenditure and employment, and providing policy implications of how to plan and manage government R&D expenditure as a tool of job creation.

  • Using Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (wave 1~11) database, this study analyzed the poverty duration of the poor as a whole and by households' characteristics. For this purpose, I first estimated poverty exit rates and reentry rates applying discrete-time hazard model to the sample, and then calculated poverty duration combining these two probability rates. The results show that about a half of poor households are transitory (short-term) poor with 1~2 years of poverty duration. A quarter is chronic (long-term) poor lasting for 5 or more years of poverty duration. The remained quarter can be categorized as the recurrent or mid-term poor. The socioeconomic characteristics of households greatly affect poverty duration. Long-term poverty is prevalent among female-head households, elderly households, single households, or households headed by a person with a lower level of education. If households' heads do not work, or work as temporary or daily-employed workers, the poverty duration tends to be longer. The findings suggest that the poor consist of various social classes with different characteristics. Efficient anti-poverty policy should be based on thoroughly identifying the specific characteristics and needs of each class.

  • Purpose: This study aims to investigate the cross-sectional association of company size and self-rated health using representative data on Korean workers. Methods: We used the data from 2,884 wage workers collected by Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (17th). The association between company size and self-rated health was analyzed using logistic regression with covariates including demographic characteristics, work environment, job satisfaction, and health-related behaviors. Resulst: Odds ratio (OR) for better health status among workers in large-sized company was 1.351 (CI. 1.054~1.731), compared to workers in small-sized company. We performed three separate models stratified by firm size (small, medium, and large companies). Occupation variables showed different effect on health depending on firm sizes. OR for better health of white-color job (referred to blue-color job) was 1.693 in medium-sized company model but it was 0.615 in large company model. OR for better health of the workers working shift work showed 0.606 in large company model but it was not significant in small and medium company models. Conclusion: We found that small-sized company workers have significantly poor self-rated health compared to large-sized firm workers. This study revealed that there exist differences among health related factors depending on firm sizes.

  • This study examines the effect of consumption level on the life satisfaction of baby-boom generation and further examines the mediating effect of subjective expectation(standard of living and government policy). This research uses the panel survey to explore ageing society in 2012 made by Korean Labor Institute, which studied 1,756(born in 1955~1961). SPSS 21.0 Package was applied to analyze the date and multi-regression analysis was conducted. As a result, first, the findings show that as the consumption level increases, the life satisfaction of the baby-boom generation goes up. Second, the findings reveal that subjective expectation partially mediates the influences of consumption level on the life satisfaction of baby-boom generation. This study further discusses the theoretical and political implication of the direction properties on baby-boomer based upon the results of the study.
