Performance Analysis of R404A Refrigeration System with Internal Heat Exchanger Using R744 as a Secondary Refrigerant (R744를 2차 냉매로 사용하는 내부열교환기 부착 R404A 냉동시스템의 성능 분석)

  • A thermodynamic analysis of the R404A refrigeration system with an internal heat exchanger using R744 as a secondary refrigerant is presented in this paper to optimize the design for operating parameters of the system. The main results are summarized as follows: The COP increases with increasing subcooling and superheating degree of R404A, internal heat exchanger and compression efficiency of the R404A cycle and evaporating temperature of the R744 cycle and decreasing temperature difference of the cascade heat exchanger and condensing temperature of the R404A cycle. The mass flow ratio decreases with increasing evaporating temperature of the R744 cycle and internal heat exchanger efficiency of the R404A cycle and decreasing subcooling and superheating degree of the R744 cycle, temperature difference of the cascade heat exchanger and condensing temperature of the R404A cycle.

  • In this paper, cycle performance analysis of $CO_2-C_3H_8$ (R744-R290) cascade refrigeration system with internal heat exchanger is presented to offer the basic design data for the operating parameters of the system. The operating parameters considered in this study include subcooling and superheating degree and gas cooling pressure and evaporating temperature in the propane (R290) low temperature cycle and the carbon dioxide (R744) high temperature cycle. The main results were summarized as follows : The COP of cascade refrigeration system of $CO_2-C_3H_8$ (R744-R290) increases with the increasing subcooling degree, but decreases with the increasing superheating degree. The COP of cascade refrigeration system increases with the increasing evaporating temperature, but decreases with the increasing gas cooling pressure. Therefore, superheating and subcooling degree, compressor efficiency, evaporating temperature and gas cooling pressure of $CO_2-C_3H_8$ (R744-R290) cascade refrigeration system have an effect on the COP of this system.

  • Optimization of a heat exchanger with internally finned circular tubes has been performed for three-dimensional periodically fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer. The design variables of fin number N, fin width ($d_1,d_2$) and fin height(H), are numerically optimized for the limiting conditions of $N=22{\sim}37$, $d_1=0.5{\sim}1.5$ mm, $d_2=0.5{\sim}1.5$ mm, $H=0.1{\sim}1.5$. Due to the periodic boundary conditions along main flow direction, the three layers of meshes are considered. The CFD and the mathematical optimization are coupled to optimize the heat exchanger. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method and the optimization is carried out by using the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method which is widely used in the constrained nonlinear optimization problem.

  • In conventional microchannel heat exchangers, only one kind of fluid (hot or cold) flows in each plate. The channels contain different kinds of fluid depending on the vertical position, but they have the same kind of fluid at all horizontal positions. Therefore, there is a slower heat transfer rate in the horizontal direction than in the vertical direction. We propose a microchannel heat exchanger in which hot and cold fluid flows alternately in each plate to improve the thermal performance. This novel channel array requires a special design for the inlet and outlet. The proposed channel array has a faster heat transfer rate than a conventional channel array. The thermal performance of the novel channel array increases with increasing Reynolds number and Prandtl number, but it decreases as the ratio of solid to fluid thermal conductivity increases.

  • In this study, a performance evaluation was conducted using a SUS 304 plate applied to low-temperature co-fired coating as a replacement for titanium plates. As a result of computational fluid dynamic analysis, the SUS 304 plate, applied to low-temperature co-fired coating, showed better heat transfer performance than a titanium plate, for 100 micron thickness coating. The result of the experiments using an actual heat exchanger revealed that a coated SUS 304 plate showed better heat transfer performance than a titanium plate. Furthermore, as the degree of corrosion and scale formation of the plate was confirmed through an overhaul inspection, the corrosion resistance of a coated SUS 304 plate was found to be almost the same as that of a titanium plate, and the inhibition effect of scale formation by sea water was better with a coated SUS 304 plate.

Numerical analysis of turbulent flows in the helically coiled pipes of heat transfer (열교환기의 나선형 관내 난류유동 수치해석)

  • The flow analysis has been made by applying the turbulent models in the helically coiled tubes of heat transfer. The k-${\varepsilon}$ and Spalart-Allmaras turbulent models are used in which the structured grid is applied for the simulation. The velocity vector, the pressure contour, the change of residuals along the iteration number and the friction factors are simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations to make clear the Reynolds number effect. The helical tube increases the centrifugal forces by which the wall shear stress become larger on the outer side of the tube. The centrifugal force makes the heat transfer rate locally larger due to the increase of the flow energy, which finds out the close relationship between the pressure drop and friction factor in the internal flow. The present numerical results are compared with others, for example, in the value of friction factor for validation.

  • In this paper, the thermoacoustic refrigerating system was implemented and its operation was experimentally verified. The system is composed of several parts ,4 inch midrange speaker, speaker housing, chamber, stack housing, stack of plates, heat exchangers, thin pipe and cavity. The system is filled with He gas at 10 bar and contains T-type thermocouples and condenser microphone for measuring the temperature and pressure inside, respectively. In addition, cooling water is used for protecting speaker from thermal destruction and cooling down the hot heat exchanger. For the experimental verification of the implemented refigerating system, electrical impedance and resonance characteristics were measured. The results showed that it was most efficient to drive the system at 340 Hz. When operated at 340 Hz, $30^\circ{C}$ environments and 50 electical watts, the temperature of the cold region decreased by $16^\circ{C}$. The dissatisfaction mainly comes from the incomplete thermal insulation of the cold region. We also pointed out some guidelines to improve the performance for later study.

  • The objective of this study is to numerically investigate the thermal characteristics of an automobile exhaust-based heat exchanger for automotive thermoelectric power generation with various exhaust gas mass flow rates and temperatures. The heat exchanger for automotive thermoelectric power generation has a square-type pin installed inside, so the maximum amount of heat can be transferred to the thermoelectric element from the heat energy coming from the automobile exhaust gas. The exhaust gas mass flow rate changed from 0.01, to 0.02, to 0.03 kg/s, and the exhaust gas temperature changed from 400, to 450, to 500, to 550, to $600^{\circ}C$, respectively. A numerical simulation was conducted by using the commercial program ANSYS CFX v17.0. Consequently, the exhaust gas pressure difference between the inlet and the outlet of the heat exchanger is determined according to the flow rate of the exhaust gas. When the mass flow rate of the exhaust gas increased, the pressure difference between the inlet and the outlet of the heat exchanger increased, but the exhaust gas pressure difference between the inlet of the heat exchanger and the outlet did not vary with the exhaust gas temperature. Therefore, in order to obtain the maximum surface temperature from the heat exchanger, the exhaust gas mass flow rate should be lower, and the exhaust gas temperature should be higher.

  • This article presents a numerical and experimental investigation for the single-phase forced laminar convective heat transfer through arrays of micro-channels in micro heat exchangers to be used for cooling power-intensive semiconductor packages, especially the stacked multi-chip modules. In the numerical analysis, a parametric study was carried out for the parameters affecting the efficiency of heat transfer in the flow of coolants through parallel rectangular micro-channels. In the experimental study, the cooling performance of the micro heat exchanger was tested on prototypes of stacked multi-chip modules with difference channel dimensions. The simulation results and the experiment data were acceptably accordant within a wide range of design variations, suggesting the numerical procedure as a useful method for designing the cooling mechanism in stacked multi-chip packages and similar electronic applications.
