  • The purpose of the present study was to examine a) whether wife's depression and Hwa-Byung (HB) would predict husband's depression and HB and b) whether husband's marital satisfaction would moderate the relationship between wife's and husband's depression and HB. Results showed that wife's depression was significantly associated with husband's depression, and wife's HB was significantly associated with husband's HB. However, wife's depression was not a significant predictor of husband's HB, whereas wife's HB was not a significant predictor of husband's depression. This particular finding might reflect that depression and HB are related, yet distinct disorders. Lastly, husband's marital satisfaction was found to buffer the negative effect of wife's HB on husband's HB.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the type of Sanhujori subjectivity experienced by husbands of pregnant women, and analyzed the characteristics of each type. Method: Q-methodology was used and 207 statements were extracted. Finally, 37 Q-samples were derived and 40 P-samples used the 9-point scale to distribute statements. Data were collected from March-May 2018 and analyzed using PC-QUANL program. Results: The analysis of factor weights and variables showed that 48.0% of the total variance was explained by three types of subjectivity, namely, 'couple-centered pursuit of women's health', 'expecting emotional recovery and requiring social support', and 'each family makes their own family system' for which the explanatory powers were 38.1%, 5.8%, and 4.1%, respectively. Conclusion: This study is meaningful as it explores Sanhujori from the viewpoint of husbands; its findings can be used to both evaluate Sanhujori service in Korea and provide basic data to develop convergent services for Sanhujori.

Specifically the results of in-depth interviews with 13 females in rural multicultural family was analyzed through phenomenological method. The results were as followings: first, wife's cognition about husband role in rural multicultural family, they were 'nice and warm man', 'no special thought', 'clean and cool looking man', 'man without straitening wife', 'husband taking care of housekeeping', 'having independent family' and 'strong responsibility to children'. Females in rural multicultural family did not deeply think about husband's role at international marriage, but it could be known that vague longing for rich country, Korea by Korean wave and its expectation continued to expectation on husband. Second, they were 'good-tempered and nice to me', 'adjust to me', 'irresponsibility and apathy', 'cannot lean to him', 'no housekeeping', 'intermediate role between his family', 'more taking care of children, parents and relatives', 'drink, gambling and violence'. The experience of husband role was little different from cognition of husband role by females in rural mulitcultural family.

  • This study aims to investigate the interdependence of Korean middle and old-aged couples in the association between exercise and life satisfaction through grip strength trajectory. Data were drawn from the nationally representative Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) collected from 2006 to 2016. The sample included couples over 45 years of age in the first wave and participated in all six waves of the survey (Ncouple=1,997). There were three steps for analyses: correlation, parallel latent growth curve model, tests of indirect effects of the mediation paths. Covariates included in the models were husbands and wives' characteristics (age, education, work status, chronic diseases, marital satisfaction, contact frequency with friends or neighbors) and couple's household income. Results showed husbands' and wives' life satisfaction and grip strength were interdependent upon each other. Also, exercise participation of both husbands and wives was associated with both husbands' and wives' life satisfaction via the initial level of grip strength of husbands. Moreover, exercise participation of only husbands was associated with wives' life satisfaction through the initial grip strength of husbands. These results suggest the aging processes of middle and old-aged couples need to be understood in the context of gender dynamics and couple interdependence.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of husbands' sex role stereotype, intercultural sensitivity, and the acceptance of wife's culture on immigrant women's acculturation, marital satisfaction and life satisfaction in multi-cultural family in Korea. The data of 100 immigrant women and their husbands were analyzed. Husbands' mean age was 41.6 and wifes' mean age was 29.6. The results of this study are as follows. The first, husbands' sex role stereotype, intercultural sensitivity and the acceptance of wives' culture together explain only marginalization among wives' acculturation(integration, assimilation, segregation, and marginalization) significantly, but individual variable's effect was not significant. The second, husbands' acceptance of wives' culture explain marital and life satisfaction significantly. Third, only marginalization among four types of acculturation explain significantly marital and life satisfaction significantly. integration explain only life satisfaction significantly. Husbands' sex role stereotype is related with the acceptance of their wives' culture and their intercultural sensitivity negatively. In wives' acculturation, there is low positive correlation between assimilation and integration and moderate negative correlation between assimilation and marginalization. This study revealed that the marital and life satisfaction of immigrant women in intercultural family in Korea are explained by acculturation which was influenced by their husband's acceptance of wives' culture and they are not only immigrant wife's problem but multicultural problem.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between multi-cultural family husbands' stress related to their wife and their psychological abuse based on the Stress theory of Lazarus et al. Data from 271 subjects that answered to all questions regarding the subjects' social demographic characteristics, and the husbands' stress related to their wife and their psychological abuse of their wife in statistical analyses. To analyze the data, a study model was set using multi-cultural family husbands' stress related to their wife as an independent variable and their psychological abuse of their wife as a dependent variable and the goodness-of-fit of the model for the data and the relationship between the variables were reviewed using a structural equation model. According to the results, the goodness-of-fit index of the model satisfied the statistical acceptable standard with CFI=0.909 and RMSEA=0.057. The relationship between the variables indicated that multi-cultural family husbands' stress related to their wife had significant effects on their psychological abuse of their wife. This result indicates the necessity of intervention for management of the husbands' stress in order to prevent multi-cultural family husbands' psychological abuse of their wife.

  • This study is to find the convergence effect of a husband's help on self-efficacy and postpartum depression in mother. Each husband did mother and baby care until postpartum 6th week after completing three sessions of education. The data was collected in the 1st and 6th week postpartum, and analyzed using SPSS 20.0. Husbands's practice rate was 80%. Factors affecting to mothers' self-efficacy were parity, antepartum admission and husband's job, and to their postpartum depression were mothers' education, monthly income and antepartum depression. Prevalence of postpartum depression in the 1st and 6th week were 33.3% and 1.7% each. There were significant differences in increasing self-efficacy and in decreasing postpartum depression(p<.001), and there was a negative correlation between two variables(r=-.62, p=.01). Husbands' help brought convergence effects on increasing mothers' self-efficacy and decreasing postpartum depression(p<.001). This results could be used in developing intervention programs in managing mothers' self-efficacy and postpartum depression after repeated studies with wider range of subjects.
