Comparison of hypertonic saline treatment in meningitis with cerebral edema (뇌수막염에서 발생한 뇌부종 치료에서 고장성 식염수 비교)

  • Purpose : Cerebral edema in meningitis is a potentially complication. Hypertonic saline of various concentrations are frequently used to treat cerebral edemas in meningitis. We analyzed the safety and efficacy of osmotic therapy in cerebral edema by comparison of various hypertonic saline concentrations and mannitol. Methods : The medical records of 42 patients, who were followed up in the Department of Pediatrics, Busan Medical Center, from Jan. 2002 to Oct. 2005, were analyzed retrospectively. We measured intracranial pressure, mean flow velocity, and various laboratory parameters. Results : In cerebral edema developed in meningitis, intracranial pressure and symptoms were improved in treatment of hypertonic saline and mannitol. Serial bolus infusion of 3 percent hypertonic saline resulted in the best outcome. There was not a statistically considerable difference on the mean values of the intracranial pressure gap. On transcranial doppler, mean flow velocity was increased and pulsatilty index was decreased. Laboratory findings (osmolarity, Na, Cl, pH, lactic acid, Ca) were diffenent during the treatment period as opposed to K, Hb, bicarbonate, base excess. There was not a specific form of hypertonic saline used in meningitis treatment with cerebral edema. Conclusion : The therapy for cerebral edema in meningitis remains largely empirical. Serial bolus infusion of 3 percent hypertonic saline is better than other hypertonic salines. Various concentrations and different infusion methods of hypertonic saline statistically does not influence the result of treatment. More research aimed at improving cerebral edema treatment is needed to identify new, effective forms of treatment.

Concentration of Vanadium in Jeju Groundwater Using Reverse Osmosis Processes (역삼투 공정을 이용한 제주 지하수의 바나듐 농축)

  • This study is to concentrate vanadium in Jeju groundwater using reverse osmosis processes, and to utilize the concentrate for vanadium water. Groundwater samples were taken from Wahyul, Ayum, and Seogwipo groundwater wells with different in vanadium content each other. Their vanadiuln concentrations were 31.8, 44.5, and 53.0 ppb, respectively. The rejection coefficients of every component in groundwater were increased with the increase of TMP At the TMP of $8 kg_f/cm^2$, the rejection coefficients of vanadium, sodium, potassium, aluminium, iron, and barium were $97.4%{\sim}99.0%,\;97.7%{\sim}97.8%,\;98.0%{\sim}98.3%,\;94.8%{\sim}97.5%,\;88.0%{\sim}96.4.0%$, and $97.9{\sim}98.0%$, respectively. And those of magnesium, calcium, chromium, mauganese, and strontium in three groundwater were more than 99.0% at the same TMP. It was possible that vanadium contents of Wahyul, Ayum and Seogwipo groundwater were concentrated into 58.6, 118.9, and 165.1 ppb, respectively, by 6 stages treatment at the recovery ratio of 15%. And these concentrated water (vanadium water) did not exceed the permissible drinking water standards.

  • A laboratory study was carried out to recover KI crystals with high purity by using fractional crystallization method from a waste solution generated from the production of polarizing film for LCD industry. The waste solution contains 1.3% KI, and other impurities such as B, Na, and PVA etc. With purity higher than 99.5% KI crystals were produced through refining process such as vacuum evaporation, fractional crystallization, filtering, and 24hr aging. Also the concentrated impurities were eliminated about 70% by recrystallization.

  • For the purpose of development of the extraction process of lithium ion from concentrated water eliminated from desalination process, an experimental research on the solvent extraction of lithium ion from aqueous solutions was performed. The effects of operating parameters, such as concentration of extractant, ratio of extracting solution/aqueous solution, pH of aqueous solution, were examined. The effect of sodium chloride, the major component of sea water, was also examined. Lithium ion in aqueous solutions of pH=10.2~10.6 adjusted by ammonia solution was most effectively extracted by extracting solution composed of 0.02 M TTA and 0.04 M TOPO in kerosine. The addition of sodium chloride in lithium aqueous solution significantly interfered the extraction of lithium ion.

  • 천일염의 생산공정은 바닷물(나트륨 농도: 2~3%)을 저수지로 유입시킨 바닷물을 농축하는 1차 증발지(난치)와 2차 증발지(누태)로 보내 일반적으로 2주 정도 증발시켜 나트륨 농도 12~15% 소금물을 만든다. 온도가 낮은 겨울철에는 결정지를 거치거나 2차 증발지의 농축시켜 창고(해주)에서 보관 하는 동안 나트륨 농도 25~27%정도로 상승되어 소금 결정을 이루고 채염하여 창고로 운송한다. 보관창고에서 천일염에서 쓴맛을 내는 간수를 제거한 뒤 선별, 건조 및 포장하는 유통하는 단계로 이뤄진다. 천일염의 생산과정 중 해주는 함수를 저장하여 고농도의 함수를 저장하여 불용분 및 이물질을 자연 침전시켜 맑은 함수를 다음 공정으로 이송시켜 천일염 품질향상에 중요한 공정 중에 하나이다. 그러나 일반적인 염전의 해주는 지붕의 복사열로 인하여 저장중인 해수의 대류로 인하여 침전물이 상승되고 이물질이 부유함으로 인하여 품질저하의 원인이 되고 있다. 또한 해주 구조 및 해주 품질에 대한 자료는 전무한 실정이다. 따라서, 본 연구의 목적은 해주의 깊이에 따른 해수의 대류 방지 깊이 및 품질 변화를 측정하여 고품질 천일염 생산공정에 적용하는데 목적이 있다. 해주분석을 위한 염전은 결정지 채염공정을 공유하는 2개지역 3개 염전을 대상으로 하였으며, 무안, 운남 및 만품지역의 3개소를 선정하여 생산방식이 비교적 동일한 염전을 선정하여 조사 및 분석하였다. 해주의 깊이는 1.0, 3.0, 3.5m인 해주의 시료를 채취하여 Calcium, Magnesium, Sulphate, Chloride 의 함량 분석은 Arena 20 XT 자동흡광분석기 (Automated photometric analyzer)을 이용하여 분석을 하였다. 각 염전에서 채취한 해수의 평균 탁도 값은 해주의 깊이가 깊을수록 탁도 값이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 해수의 색상 "b" 값은 해주 깊이가 깊을수록 낮은 결과를 보였다. Mg 함량은 전반적으로 15,000~40,000 mg/L 범위의 값을 나타냈으며, Sulphate 함량은 약 30,000~65,000 mg/L 범위의 값을 나타났으며, 깊이가 깊을수록 Mg, Sulphate 함량이 낮아지는 결과를 보였으나 Chloride 함량은 뚜렷한 경향을 보이지 않았다. 실험 결과 해주 깊이에 따른 함수의 품질 차이가 발생하는 것을 확인 할 수 있었으며, 해주의 바닥 깊이가 깊을수록 함수의 불용분 침전, 분리에 효율적인 것으로 판단되었다.

  • Carboxymethylated polyamine-polyurea resin loaded with rubeanic acid (RCCPPI resin) was obtained by 1 step chemical reaction between chlorocarboxymethylated polyamine-polyurea(CCPPI) resin as matrix polymer and rebeanic acid. This resin was confirmed with infrared spectrometry, elemental analysis, and thermal analysis(DSC). The adsorption characteristics of the heavy metal's on the resin were studied by measuring distribution coefficient($K_d$) with changing pH of the solutions and frontal chromatography. The enrichment, recovery, and analysis of trace heavy metals, such as cadmium, cerium, copper, nikel, lead, and zinc, in the presence of high concentrations of sodium, calcium, and acetate salts was possible quantitatively by a column packed with the resin at each optimum pH. Preconcentration factors were more than 25. To elute the adsorbed heavy metals on the resin, 0.025M EDTA solution(pH 9.0) was used.

Analysis of Physical Properties and Mechanical Energy Input of Cornmeal Extrudates Fortified with Dairy Products by Carbon Dioxide Injection (탄산가스 주입에 의한 유제품 강화 옥수수 압출성형물의 성질과 기계적 에너지 투입량의 분석)

  • Selected physical properties of cornmeal extrudates fortified with dairy products and extrusion process by $CO_2$ gas injection were analysed. Dairy products including whole milk powder, whey protein concentrate non-fat dry milk, and sodium caseinate were tested at the addition of 10% and 20%, based on cornmeal weight. $CO_2$ gas was injected to the barrel at the pressure of 0.7 and 1.4 MPa. Specific mechanical energy (SME) input was decreased by the addition of dairy products. Sodium caseinate had a little effect on decreasing the SME input, however whole milk powder tremendously reduced SME input when the concentration increased. An increase in milk product content resulted in increasing the piece density at the injection pressure of 0.7 MPa. At both 10% and 20% milk product content, the piece density was lowest at the injection pressure of 0.7 MPa. The sectional expansion index was highest at the injection pressure of 0.7 MPa. However, the specific length was constantly increased with the increase in $CO_2$ injection pressure. Water absorption index was decreased and water solubility index was increased by the addition of milk products. The injection pressure of $CO_2$ was optimum at 0.7 MPa. The addition of whole milk powder limited to puff the melt, but the other milk products tested resulted in puffing with $CO_2$ injection to 1.4 MPa.

Prevention of Quality Deterioration in Concentrated Strawberry Puree by Employing pH Regulators during Heat Treatment (pH 조절제를 이용한 농축 딸기 퓌레 열처리 시 품질저하 억제)

  • This study was performed to minimize quality degradation of concentrated strawberry puree after $90^{\circ}C$ for 5 min by heat treatment with citric acid (CA) and acidic sodium metaphosphate (ASM) as pH modifiers. The highest color value was 1% CA+1% ASM (13.027), followed by 1% CA (9.539) and control (6.905). Anthocyanin contents were also 1% CA+1% ASM (3.049 mg/100 g), 1% CA (1.140 mg/100 g), and control (0.757 mg/100 g) in sequence. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of control, 1% CA, and 1% CA+1% ASM were 58.148, 72.638, and 83.736%, respectively. The color values, anthocyanin contents, and DPPH radical scavenging activities were significantly different at P<0.05 between control and 1% CA+1% ASM treatment. For the results of overall preference for hedonic test, there was no significant difference at P>0.05 among the three samples. During heat treatment, quality degradation of concentrated strawberry puree was reduced by 1% CA+1% ASM treatment, which is expected for new acidulants.

  • This study was conducted to minimize the quality degradation of concentrated blueberry juice after $90^{\circ}C$ treatment for 5 min by means of citric acid (CA) and acidic sodium metaphosphate (ASM) as pH modifiers. The highest anthocyanin content was observed at 1% CA+1% ASM (65.747 mg per 100 g) followed by 1% CA (46.022 mg per 100 g) and control (30.864 mg per 100 g). The DPPH radical scavenging activities of 1% CA+1% ASM, 1% CA and control were 87.338, 75.486 and 67.983% in respectively. The elastase inhibitory activity at 1% CA+1% ASM, 1% CA and in the control was 87.338, 75.486 and 67.983%, and the tyrosinase inhibitory of these samples were 77.891, 67.598 and 26.375%, respectively. Anthocyanin contents, DPPH radical scavenging, elastase inhibitory and tyrosinase inhibitory activities were significantly different (p<0.05) between the 1% CA+1% ASM treatment and control. During the heat treatment, quality degradation of concentrated blueberry juice was reduced by the 1% CA+1% ASM treatment, as expected for new acidulants.

  • Glucosidic bond at the $C_{20}$ position of the sapogenins was hydrolyzed easily in the lower pH, higher temperature and longer time to give prosapogenins and sugars. The glucosidic bond of saponin at the $C_3\;of\; ginsenoside-Rb_1\;$, which is secondary carbon, was relatively stable due to the low electron density of -0.2. But the bond of saponin at the $C_{20}$ position, which is tertiary carbon with the relatively high electron density of -0.3, was liable to be hydrolyzed even in weak acidic solution by the increase of heating time. On the other hand, fresh and white ginseng contained 4.12 mg/g, 13.05 mg/g of citric acid, 0.68 mg/g, 2.18 mg/g of malonic acid, 1.13 mg/g, 3.68 mg/g of oxalic acid, 2.68 mg/g, 8.62 mg/g of malic acid and 0.13 mg/g, 0.46 mg/g of succinic acid, respectively. Ginseng saponins were very stable in ginseng extract neutralized with sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate corresponding to the equivalent amount of the total organic acid in the ginseng.
