Humidity Controlled Drying for the Fragments of an Wooden Boat in the Neolithic Age, Excavated from Bibong-ri, Changnyeong, Korea (창녕 비봉리 출토 신석기시대 나무배 편의 조습건조)

  • The conservation has been conducted for the fragments of an wooden boat in the Neolithic Age, excavated from Bibong-ri, Changnyeong, Korea. The vacuum-freeze drying have been applied to mostly to the small relics, such as wooden lacquerwares or small wooden goods etc.. Therefore, the large objects like a wooden boats have been treated almost by air-drying after impregnation with aqueous PEG solution. The air-drying is needed to impregnate with PEG aqueous solution during long period and run the risk of the fault generation. This report explain an example adapted for the fragments of the wooden boat by humidity-controlled drying(HCD) with slow adjusting moisture content. We did the chemical pre-treatment, PEG aqueous solution. The concentration of the aqueous solution was increased gradually from 10% to 80%. After the impregnation, the objects were dried by the HCD. The dimensional stability of the fragments after treatment was good.

임업에도 대량복제 묘목생산시대 열다 - 침엽수종 품종화 및 산림자원화에 크게 기여

  • 산림청 임업연구원(원장 노의래)은 최근 침엽수종인 소나무, 낙엽송 및 리기테다소나무 등 체세포배에 의한 복제 묘목을 대량생산하는 생물공학적 기술을 개발하는데 성공하였다. 지금까지 임업에서는 접목이나 꺾꽂이 등의 무성증식방법으로 특정형질을 가진 복제묘목을 생산하여 왔다. 특히 이러한 방법은 유실수, 포플러 등에 오랫동안 적용되어 왔으나 최근에는 체세포배에 의한 복제기술이 주로 활엽수 등에서 성공한 바 있다. 이번에 개발한 체세포배에 의한 복제기술은 내년부터 솔잎혹파리에 강한 내충성 소나무, 형질이 월등히 우수한 낙엽송 및 리기테다소나무의 대량생산에 적용하여 단기간내에 솔잎혹파리 내충성 소나무 복제묘목을 보급함으로써 솔잎혹파리 피해가 없는 우량소나무 조림이 가능할 것으로 기대하고 있다. 현재 캐나다 및 뉴질랜드와 같은 임업 선진국가에서는 체세포배에 의한 복제기술을 이용하여 새로운 우수 품종을 산업적인 규모로 대량 생산하고 있으나, 우리나라 소나무와 같이 2엽송(二葉松)인 경우 체세포배에 의한 복제 식물체를 생산한 것은 세계적으로 드문 일이다. 이번 연구 결과는 유전자조작 등의 첨단 생물공학 기법을 나무에 적용하기 위한 필수적인 전(前)단계로서 침엽수 육종에서 새로운 전기를 마련하였다고 볼 수 있으며 특히 임업도 농작물과 같이 특수한 품종을 육성할 수 있는 길을 터놓아 산림자원화와 산주소득증대에 크게 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

Flow resistance characteristics of tree trunk rips (나무줄기 돌출줄눈의 흐름저항 특성)

  • 돌출줄눈은 산지하천의 만곡부의 빠른 유속을 감소시키기 위하여 활용된다. 본 연구에서는 친환경 디자인의 나무줄기 돌출줄눈(Tree Trunk Rip, TTR)과 사다리꼴 돌출줄눈(Trapezoid Rip, TR)의 흐름저항을 비교 분석하기 위하여 개수로 수리실험을 수행하였다. 실험은 길이 9m, 폭이 0.6m이며 경사가 0.0035로 고정된 개수로의 한쪽 측벽에 돌출줄눈을 설치하여 진행하였다. 사다리 꼴 돌출줄눈의 형상은 밑변 각이 $63^{\circ}$이며 무차원 설치간격 ${\lambda}_{nv}$가 6, 9, 12인 경우이다. 나무줄기 돌출줄눈의 기본 형상은 사다리꼴이고 표면은 나무껍질 무늬이며 ${\lambda}_{nv}$가 약 10이다. 나무줄기 돌출줄눈의 간격은 사다리꼴 돌출줄눈의 최적 설치 간격 9~12배 범위에 해당되고 평균 마찰계수는 사다리꼴 돌출줄눈의 9~12배의 평균 마찰계수 범위에 포함되었다. 사다리꼴 돌출줄눈의 ${\lambda}_{nv}$가 9, 12일 때의 전체 저항에 대한 형상저항의 비는 평균 $69.4{\pm}5.8%$였으며 나무줄기 돌출줄눈은 $70.2{\pm}2.1%$로 사다리꼴 돌출줄눈과 유사하다. 산지하천 흐름저항을 위한 돌출줄눈 설치에 있어 친환경적 디자인을 고려한 나무줄기가 사다리꼴 돌출줄눈보다 활용도가 클 것으로 기대된다.

Effect of Culture Methods on Growth and Mineral Contents in Chinese Toon (Cedrela sinensis A. Juss) (재배방법이 참죽나무 잎의 생육 및 무기물 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, we investigated the changes of growth characteristics, mineral and chlorophyll content of young leafy vegetable of Chinese toon grown under greenhouse and open fields. Results showed that growth of young leafy vegetable of Chinese toon was somewhat accelerated in greenhouse compared to the open field. In case of apical bud growth, several parameters such as plant height, number of branch, fresh weight and chlorophyll content showed similar tendency in both greenhouse and open field. In the changes of minerals, N content in apical buds recorded significant increase to 3.1 times compared to that of later buds. Its content was 1.2 times higher in greenhouse than that of open field. Mineral contents including P, Ca, Mg and Fe were significantly increased in greenhouse. Highest ascorbic acid content was observed in lateral buds grown in greenhouse and then it was followed such as lateral bud in open field, apical bud in open field, and apical bud in greenhouse, in turn. These results indicate that greenhouse culture could be applicable to new culture in order to produce young leafy vegetable of Chinese toon with high quality.

  • Some physical and chemical properties of wood-plastic combinations(W.P.C.) made of domestic soft woods such as pinus densiflora, pinus rigida and poplus deltoides were measured. The rates of improvement in properties were roughly proportional to the contents of polymer or polymer mixtures in W.P.C. For the W.P.C. obtained by means radiation curing and containing 80% of polymer or polymer mixture, the hardness and water absorptirity were improved 2.2 times and 4 times those of the original wood, respectively. The improvement of hardness was especially remarkable in the W.P.C. made of pinus densiflora and polystyrene(120%) to show 7 times increased hardness. For the W.P.C. obtained by means of thermal curing and containing 80% of polymer or polymer mixture, the hardness and water absorptivity were improved 2.4 times and 3.4 times those of the non-treated woods, respectively. These data indicate that the properties of W.P.C. prepared by means of radiation curing are not much different from those of W. p. C. prepared by means of thermal curing. Both of acid resistancy and alkali resistancy of the W.P.C. were also improved remarkably in comparison with the non-treated wood.

Vitamin content in Rosa davurica Pall. (생열귀나무의 채취부위 및 시기별 비타민 함량)

  • Vitamin contents in different plant parts and harvesting time of Rosa davurica Pall. were determined to examine their applicability for a new medicinal supply. Among plant parts analysed, leaf contained the highest ascorbic acid concent of 1973.9 mg/100g. Fruit contained ascorbic acid (714.6mg/100g) 2. 7 times less than leaf. Vitamin contents in leaf parts also differed depending on harvesting time. Vitamin content in leaves harvested in November was much higher than that in September. Spectrophotometric analysis of total ${\beta}-carotene$ in leaf showed higher contents than that in fruit.

Phytosociological Study on Composition, Distribution and Habitat of the Ussurian Pear and Chinese Pear, Korean Wild Species (한국 자생 산돌배와 돌배나무의 조성, 분포, 입지에 관한 식물사회학적 연구)

  • In order to clarify the species composition, distribution and habitat of the Korean wild Pyrus ussuriensis and P. pyrifolia communities, that are so expected as a useful resource plant, an investigation was carried out according to phytosociological method on Mts. Hambaek, Ilwol, Sobaek, Juwang and Gaya in Korea. In the present study, we made an attempt to elucidate the autecological characteristics of the wild Pyrus species by synecological approach. As a result, the forests including the Pyrus species were divided into the two associations and two communities, considering the existing vegetation units for the forest; Syneilesio-Quercetum serratae, Corylo-Quercetum mongozicae, Ainsziaea acerifolia- Quercus mongolica community and Fraxinus rhynchophylla-Pyrus ussuriensis community. Among the units, the Syneilesio-Quercetum serratae and the Corylo-Quercetum mongolicae belong to southern type and middile-northern type, respectively, in their distributional type. It is inferred that the wild Pyrus species are distributed preferably in the deciduous forest zone in Korea, compared to the other forest zones. In particular the Pyrus species are present alone or dominantly in only both the tree layer or subtree layer of the forests, reflecting their shade intolerance ecophysiologically. Thus they usually were distributed in SE or SW of slope aspect. Generally the canopy of the forests including the Pyrus species was so open. Species diversity of the vegetation units was highest in the Syneizesio-Quercetum serratae and lowest in the Ainsliaea acerifolia-Quercus mongolica community. The Corylo-Quercetum mongolicae and the Pyrus ussuriensis-Fraxinus rhynchophylla community are medium between the two.

Ecological Niche Breadth of Q. mongolica and Overlap with Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis along with Three Environment Gradients (세 가지 환경구배에 따른 신갈나무의 생태적 지위폭과 상수리나무, 굴참나무와의 생태적 중복역)

  • In order to characterize the ecological traits of Q. mongolica, we treated the seedlings of this species with three environmental factors, light, moisture and nutrient gradients from March to October 2007, and measured morphological and ecological 17 characters. Lastly calculated ecological niche breadth and niche overlap between Q. mongolica-Q. acutissima and Q. mongolica-Q. variabilis, and analysed them with a special reference to ecological distribution pattern and their competition relationship in Korea. The ecological niche breadth of Q. mongolica showed the lowest in nutrient treatment, but the highest in soil moisture treatment. The ecological niche value under light was intermediate. On comparison of the ecological niche breadth of three oak species, Q. mongolica showed the highest in light environment, which might be a reason for the dominant distribution in the forest plant community, Korea. The ecological niche overlap of Q. mongolica-Q. acutissima and Q. mongolica-Q. varabilis was the widest in moisture treatment, but the narrowest in nutrient treatment and the intermediate in light one. These results means that these three oak species be most competitive in moisture environment than light or nutrient one, and that there are least differentiated among oak species for soil moisture condition. Cluster and PCA ordination showed that Q. mongolica and Q. acutissima were more closely arranged than Q. mongolica and Q. variabilis. From these results, it can be explained that Q. mongolica have more similar ecological niche with Q. acutissima than with Q. variabilis, consequently competition between Q. mongolica and Q. acutissima is intensive than Q. mongolica and Q. variabilis for environment condition, especially in soil moisture.

The Nuclear DNA Content and Histological Characteristics of Triploid Poplars Grown In Vitro (현사시나무 3배체의 핵 DNA 함량 및 조직학적 특성)

  • Herein we analyzed the nuclear DNA content and the histological characteristics of the triploid of the 'Hyunsasi' (Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa $F_1$) which were developed for biomass production and molecular breeding research. The flow cytometric analysis showed that the nuclear DNA content of the 3 triploids were 1.6 times greater than those of the diploid. In terms of histological characteristics, the cross-section area of the stem of 'Line-18' was 1.6 times larger than that of the diploid. The area of pith, and cortex and phloem of the stem of 'Line-18' was also 1.6 and 2.0 times larger than that of the diploid, respectively. Moreover, the length and area of guard cell of 'Line-18' was 1.2 times larger than that of the diploid. These results helps to understand the cytological characteristics of the triploid poplar clones, and further investigations in the growth rate and wood properties of the triploids growing in the field will determine whether the triploid poplars are good candidates for molecular breeding programs and for the improvement of industrial biomass productivity.

  • 4월은 유채. 개나리. 벚나무. 매화. 라일락. 오리목. 도토리. 참나무. 또는 사과. 배. 복숭아등을 비롯한 과일 나무 등 이름도 모르는 야생화를 비롯하여 밀원 식물이 1년중 제일 많이 개화된다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 기후도 적당한데다 밀원이 많다보니 1년중 번식이 제일 잘되는 시기이기도 하다.
