  • The picosecond time resolved fluorescence spectra of Hematoporphyrin Derivative (HPD) in both solutions and cancer cell are measured by a time correlated single photon counting system with a synchronously mode locked dye laser. Two exoponential decay components in the fluorescence spectra were observed. The slow decay(6.3 ㎱)and the fast one(350 ㎰)are attributed to be originated from monomers and dimers, respectively. The absorption and fluorescence measurements in steady state also showed the presence of a monomeric and dimeric forms of HPD molecules. The monomer lifetime in the cancer cell was measured to be longer than that in solution, which was expected from the blue shift and narrowing of the absorption spectra for HPD-treated in vitro. The relative amplitude of the fast component was found to be enhanced in cancer cell, strongly indicating the higher affinity of the dimer for the cancer cell.

  • This study was conducted to investigate to compare avifauna at Taegosa area in Pukhansan with Kamapong area in Inje-gun, Korea. The observed birds at Taegosa in Pukhansan and Kamapong area were 35 individuals on species and 113 individuals on 29 species respectively. In Pukhansan area, there was severely avifauna diminishing in July in which users were concentrated. Pica pica sericea and Streptopelia orientalis orientalis were observed the dominant species in Pukhansan area and Kamapong area respectively. There were two species of national monument in these surveyed area, Otus scops stictonotus in Pukhansan area and Falco tinnunculus interstinctus in Kamapong area. Cuculus saturatus horsfields, Cuculus micropterus micropterus and Eurystomus orientalis calonyx were found out in Kamapong area to the rare bird. Species diversity and avi-ecosystems in Kamapong area were seemed to good, whereas in Pukhansan area, there was relatively poor avifauna caused by isolating with surrounding ecosystem, overusing by visitors beyond capacity and heavy acid rain. Therefore avifauna protection plans sould be made and carried out for Pukhansan National Park by thorought study with experts.

  • To investigate the forest structure in Ijontong Cholto area, twenty four plots were set up (each l0$\times$10m ) and surveyed. According to the analysis of ordination by DCA, community divided into 5 groups. The divided groups are Quercus serrata -Q. valiabilis community(I), Q. serrata - Pinus densiflora community(II), Q. mongolica - Lindera obtusiloba community(III), Carpinus laxiflora - Acer pseudo-sieboldianum community(IV) and Acer mono community(V). So the successional trends seems to be from P. densiflora through Q. serrata, Q. valiabilis, Q. mongolica to C. laxiflora, C. cordata, A. mono in canopy layer. And in the subtree and shrub layer, it was expected that from Rhododendron mucronulatum, Rh. schlippenbachii to A. pseudo-sieboldianum, L. obtusiloba. But some sites were likely to become Q. mongolica edaphic climax.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze dominance-diversity of Quercus mongolica community which characterize the boreal-temperate deciduous forest in Korea. Employing the releve method of Muller-Domboes and Ellenberg, 100 quadrats were sampled in the natural forest of Mt. Odae, Mt. Chumbong and Mt. Jungwang in Kangwon-do, where Quercus mongolica community is in the situation of climax or subclimax. On the basis of Braun-Blanquet method, field survey, which accounts ffor the characters of the species structure of Quercus mongolica community, was carried out between 1991 and 1994. Quercus mongolica community was relatively in a stable condition because of the even distribution of its various indices: the species diversity index was 0.4~1.2; the species richness index was 2~11; the evenness index was 0.6~0.9. The dominance-diversity curve were comparatively of lognormal distrivution with a gentle slope in all communities. The species sewuence curve for Quercus mongolica - Lindera obtusiloba community had relatively a steep slope, which meant that the evenness of the community would be low. The species sequence curve for Quercus mongolica - Carpinus cordata community had a slow slope, which meant that the evenness and the stability of the community would be high.

  • Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. & Zucc.), native to Korea and currently the most important timber species in Korea is being threatened by a blister rust discase caused by a Cronartium species. The fungus has been tentatively identified as Cronartium ribicola Fischer. The fungus alternates between P. koraiensis and Pedicularis resupinata L. (a herbaceous perennial) under natural conditions in Korea although experimentally it has been shown to infect several Ribes species. The taxonomic diagnosis of the causal fungus is not fully resolved. A review of the status of this rust disease on P. koraiensis and other possible hosts in Korea and its potential international significance along with present work underway in Korea is discussed.

  • Although the exterior wood such as column may frequently contact with liquid water, little work has been found to measure liquid water absorption in wood. To investigate the moisture diffusivity of wood in the longitudinal direction including bound water and free water movement, liquid water absorption test was conducted at the room temperature. The order of magnitude for absorption coefficient and diffusivity was Japanese elm, horn beam, hemlock, spruce, radiata pine, and painted maple. The Boltzmann transformation method was used to determine the diffusivity from measured moisture content distributions in the absorption test. The shape of the curve representing the dependence of diffusivity with moisture content was similar in test samples. The diffusivity decreased with increasing moisture content until around the fiber saturation point and then increased at the nonhygroscopic region, which ranged from $10^{-10}$ to $10^{-7}m^2/s$.

  • The author carried out an experiment to find out the response of Striped puffer. Fugu xanthoperus (Temminck et Schlegel) to the color lights. The experimental tank (300L$\times$50W$\times$50Hcm) was set up in a dark room. Six longitudinal sections with 60cm intervals are marked in the tank to observe the location of the fish. Water depth in the tank was kept 50cm level. Light bulbs of 20W at the both ends of the tank projected the light horizontally into the tank. Two different colored filters were selected from four colors of red, blue, yellow, and white, and the were placed in front of the light bulbs to make different colors of light. Light intensity was controlled by use of auxiliary filiters intercepted between the bulb and the filter. The fishes were acclimatized in the dark for 60 minutes before they were employed in the experiment. Upon turning on the light, the number of fish in each section was counted 40 times in 30 second intervals, and the mean of the number of fish in each section was counted 40 times in 30 second intervals, and the mean of the number of fish in each section was given as the gathering rate of the fish. The colors favourited by the fish was found in order of blue, yellow, white and red in the daytime, and blue, white, yellow and red at night. The difference of the average distribution on two different colors of light was 13.12%(4.10-26.55%), and the difference in the daytime(14.79%) was larger than at night (11.45%). Constantly the gathering rate of fish on illumination period was fluctuated with instability. As the gathering rate of fish on illumination period was fluctuated with instability. As the gathering rate on one color of light increased, the gathering rate on the other color of light decreased. The difference of the gathering rate on two different colors of light was comparatively distinct and the difference in the daytime was larger than at night.

  • Having employed the transitional probability model based on Markov chain, the study was carried out to examine successional trends for community types in the natural deciduous forest of Mt. Jumbong. The species composition of oncoming generation in overstory was estimated from that of mid-story, and the species composition in mid-story was based upon that of understory. Successional trend for each community was predicted from the reorganized probability matrix of tree replacement by the square of climax index, which was evaluated by the factors of light absorption, reproduction, and wood quality. As the result of analysis, following table shows the oncoming generation of steady state and dominant species in overstory and mid-story by community types. Even though Acer pseudo-sieboldianum and Carpinus cordata could hardly reach the canopy layer due to the intrinsic growth form, these species were predicted to maintain high compositional ratio so as to play an important ecological role in the study forest ecosystem.
