  • This study investigates Kim Inhue's view of reading through the analysis of reference books in Haseo-Chunjib(하서전집). As the result, he had read 123 different books ar least. He had quoted frequently $Sish{\bar{u}}$ $S{\bar{a}}nj{\bar{i}}ng$(사서삼경), $Sh{\check{i}}ji$(사기), $H{\grave{a}}nsh{\bar{u}}$(한서), $Zhu{\bar{a}}ngz{\check{i}}$(장자), $G{\check{u}}wenzh{\bar{e}}nb{\check{a}}o$(고문진보), $Ch{\check{u}}c{\acute{i}}$(초사), $W{\acute{e}}nxu{\check{a}}n$(문선). He had read books beyond the contemporary(sixteen centurtry) scholar's common list, and had enjoyed reading over the boundaries of stereotyped idea. While he had emphasized on the scripture of Confucian, had earned more knowledges for usefulness and the bases of scholarly writings by reading a wide spectrum of books.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of Cheongsimyanggyeoksan(CYS) water extract in vitro and in vivo. Methods : To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of CYS, Raw 264.7 cells were pretreated with $3-300{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ of CYS for 1h, and then exposed to $1{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ of LPS. The cell viability was detected by MTT assay. Productions of nitric oxide(NO) and pro-inflammatory cytokines were measured in culture media. Protein levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS) and Nuclear factor-${\kappa}$B($NF-{\kappa}B$) were determined by immunoblot analysis. The effect of CYS on acute inflammation in vivo was evaluated thorugh measurment of carrageenan-induced paw edema. Results : In vitro study, cell viability assay CYS treatment of $3-300{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ has no cytotoxicity in Raw 264.7 cells. LPS-induced NO production was significantly inhibited by pretreatment with $30-300{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ of CYS. Production of interleukin-6, -$1{\beta}$ and tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ by LPS were significantly decreased by CYS pretreatment. CYS reduced LPS-mediated iNOS expression. Moreover, CYS significantly induced $I-{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ expression and reduced $NF-{\kappa}B$ expression. In vivo study, CYS significantly reduced the increases of paw swelling. Conclusions : These results suggest the clinical basis of CYS for the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

  • This study looked into the process by which Haseo(河西) Kim In-hoo(金麟厚:1510~1560), a neo-confucian scholar of mid Joseon Dynasty, was recognized and adored as an inheritor of traditional academic genealogy of neo-confucianism of Joseon Dynasty. I intended to examine the process of personal embodiment affected or excluded in certain manners by various materials covering the lifetime of bygone persons based on the process of such embodiment. The part related to childhood of Haseo was arranged newly to highlight solid relationship between Kim In-hoo and King Injong(仁宗). That was because Kim In-hoo raised the issue of loyalty and fidelity, one of the most important and most contentious issues at that time, in connection with reinstatement of GimyoSarim(己卯士林, progressive political faction with young officials), and King Injong was the king who reinstated Gimyo Sarim. That played a decisive role in establishing the image of Haseo, a classical scholar with unwavering integrity and loyalty. During the Late Joseon Dynasty, canonization of Haseo was made under the leadership of King Jeongjo(正祖) and Seoin(西人) in royal court. In the 17th century, Seoin scholars revised the materials related to lifetime of Kim In-hoo in various way and proofread and published the collection of literary works by Kim In-hoo. That aimed to establish scholastic system associated with Seoin and legitimacy of study as pursued by Seoin. This made progress with adoration towards scholars affiliated with Seoin, including Yulgok(栗谷) Lee Yi(李珥). Finally, King Jeongjo showed strong intention to take the lead as sovereign in the process while Haseo was canonized into national academy in the 18th century. That came from the desire to solidify his status as a teacher who took pride in taking responsibility for the dynasty's authentic study, as well as the king heading the dynasty politically.

  • Malignant salivary gland tumors only represent 0.08% of all childhood tumors. Especially, nasopharyngeal mucoepidermoid carcinoma(MEC) in pediatric age is an extremely rare malignancy. We hereby report a case of nasopharyngeal MEC in 5 year-old female patient. The patient underwent the complete removal of the tumor by endonasal endoscopic approach. Adjuvant postoperative radiotherapy was not considered. After 3.5 years of follow-up, there are no sign of recurrence and metastasis. Minor salivary gland tumor must be considered as a differential diagnosis of angiofibroma in nasopharynx in pediatric age. To our knowledge, the case we describe is the third case of nasopharyngeal MEC in pediatric age reported in literature.
