  • We studied a storage of waste-brown seaweed at room temperature and degradation of alginate in seaweed by microorganism DS-02. The seaweeds, mixed with 5.0 wt% DS-02 and sealed in vinyl package without any other treatment, could be stored longer than 1 year without spoilage at room temperature. During the storage process, the alginate of seaweed was decomposed by enzyme of DS-02 and the molecular weight of alginate decreased to about 1/10 of initial quantity. DS-02 growed as fast as it had maximum weight after 24 hour culture and it's enzyme had a maximum activity of alginate degradation at $40^{\circ}C.$ The seaweed sample became particles in DS-02 culture solution and the M. W of alginate decreased to about 1/10 of initial value after 24 hour decomposition. The effect of alginate degradation with DS-02 was similar to that of degradation with 3.0 M HCI solution for 24 hour.

  • Recently the production of ethanol from lignocecllulosics has received much attention due to immense potential for conversion of renewable biometerials into biofuels and chemicals. Fomitopsis palustris causes a typycal brown-rot and is unusual in that it rapidly depolymerize the cellulose in wood without removing the surrounding lignin that normally prevents microbial attack. This study demonstrated that the brown rot basidiomycete F. palustris was able to degrade crystalline cellulose. This fungus could also produce the three major cellulases (BGL, EXG and EG) when the cells were grown on 2.0% Avicel. The fungus was able to degrade both the crystalline and amorphous forms of cellulose from woody biomasses. Moreover, we found that this fungus has the processive EG like CBH which are able to degrade the crystalline region of cellulose. To establish the cellulase system in relation with degradation of woody biomass, we performed that purification, characterization and molecular cloning of a BGL, EGs and GLA from F. palustris grown on Avicel.

  • Korean households' expenditures on foodservices are on the steady increase. This paper aims to examine the foodservice expenditures of salary and wage earners's households by income decile group. This is analysed through comparing foodservice expenditures with private education expenditures because households' expenditures are likely to be weighted in favor of eating-out rather than private education. We also model the consumption function in terms of income and price, examining the responsiveness of private education demand and eating-out demand to changes in income and price using econometric methods such as regression, rolling regression and impulse response. This paper show that foodservice demand increases more than the private education does in the long-run. The result indicates that households are likely to evaluate the desire for foodservice more important than private education contrary to our expectations in the long-run. The impulse response analysis, however, suggests that households tend to increase private education expenditures rather than eating-out expenditures in the short-run.

  • The purpose of this study was to classify the financial strategies in elderly households. The data of 4,577 households with all ages and 1255 elderly households is from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(2000, 2003). The data were analyzed by various statistical methods such as frequency, mean-test, Duncan's multiple range test, k-mean cluster analysis and logistic regression. Findings were as follows; First, the classified household financial strategy types were Residual(44.3%), Financial Assets(24.0%), Informal Institutional(19.7%), Diversified Portfolio(7.6%), Real Estate(4.5%). Second, the criteria of classification of the financial strategies were relative, not absolute. Third, households(both elderly households and all households) that employed a diversified portfolio strategy had the greatest net wealth.

  • Purpose: The study was done to identify health behavior for cancer prevention in university students according to characteristics of the university students and other factors affecting health behavior for cancer prevention and to provide data to set up a strategy to reduce the cancer. Methods: Data were collected by questionnaires from 353 university students in G city. To analyze the sample survey data, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, and multiple regression analysis were performed with SPSS/WIN 15.0. Results: Significant factors that affect health behaviors for cancer prevention in university students were perception of health status, knowledge and attitudes about cancer, and smoking. These variables explained 21% of health behaviors for cancer prevention. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that in order to improve the health behavior for cancer prevention in university students it is important to development health education programs that focus on positive perception of health status. This development could be enhanced with structured and on-going education about cancer.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to identify the parenting stress of nurses with infants, toddlers, or preschoolers. Methods: The subjects are the 117 nurses working in hospitals in Gangneung City. The instruments are the questionnaires about general characteristics (14 items), parenting stress (32 items). Results: The parenting stress of nurses scored 2.46. The total parenting stress according to the demographic characteristics, there were no significant differences, but according to the position, baby-sitter, parenting support did show the significant differences. Conclusion: Nurse's parenting stress is slightly high. But it is very important to develop the nursing intervention to relieve the parenting stress by considering the characteristics that showed the significant differences in the parenting stress.

  • In this paper, we propose a new minimum resources allocation algorithm for optimal design automation. In the proposed algorithm, the operation are allocated to functional units so that the number of interconnection wires between functional units can be minimized. The registers are allocated to the maximal clusters generated by the minimal cluster partitioning algorithm. Finally, the interconnection is minimized by removing the duplicated inputs of multiplexers and exchanging the inputs across multiplexers. The efficiency of the proposed allocation algorithm is shown by experiments using benchmark examples.

  • The antiviral mechanism of KT5720 is known to inhibit the cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA), on the VSV infection in BHK-21 cell cultures. The virus inducted CPE (cell rounding) was almost completely suppressed by KT5720 at 5 uM. The inhibitor, however, did not affect the replication of the virus and the synthesis of viral macromolecules. Immunological studies showed the viral matrix (M) protein displayed intimate association with the cytoskeletal components and probably the cell rounding. KT5720, did not block the cytoskeletal disruption, while the cell rounding was suppressed. These observations suggest that the interaction between the viral M protein and the cytoskeletal components may not be enough to cause the morphological change of the cell. And, the KT5720-sensitive function may be involved in developing the VSV-induced CPE, but not essential for the virus replications.
