Methods for Implementing Environmental Education in Elementary Schools by using AI Programming (초등교육에서 인공지능 프로그래밍을 활용한 환경교육 적용 방법)

  • Even though environmental education has been getting more attention along with the recent rapid increase of natural disasters such as heat wave, heavy snow and downpour, it is unlikely for elementary schools to provide actual lessons due to the shortage of financial support and educational resources. This study is designed to enhance the recycling judgement of the elementary students to define paper, glass, plastic, PET, metal by using AI programming. The survey from the student participants shows that the learning and practice with AI programming was positively helpful for more than 70% of the participants in knowledge obtaining and understanding of recycling. The participants also gained better understanding on artificial intelligence and got motivated to have more opportunities to learn artificial intelligence programming.

A review of the mass-mortalities of sea-cage farm fishes (해상 가두리양식장 양식어류의 대량폐사에 대하여)

  • The aquaculture industry has developed rapidly over the last three decades and is an important industry that supplies over 15% of humans' animal protein intake; therefore, there is a need to increase production to meet the continuous demand. The fish cage farms on the southern coast (Kyengsangnam-do and Jeollanam-do) of Korea are critical resources in aquaculture because they account for approximately 90% of the national total fish cage farms by water area ratio. However, the current aquaculture environment is being gradually affected by climate change, which is a global issue, and its effects are expected to intensify in the future. Therefore, it is urgently imperative to accurately evaluate the effects of climate change on South Korean aquaculture industries and to develop social and national strategies to minimize damage to the fishing industry. The damage to fish farmed in cage farms on the southern coast is increasing annually and the leading causes are high and low water temperature and red tides, which are directly or indirectly related to climate change. At present, global warming can provide opportunities for aquaculture industrialization of fish or other novel species, with economic implications. However, despite such opportunities, the influx of new species can also cause problems such as ecological disturbances, increase in the reproduction frequency of microalgae such as red tide, increase in disease incidence, and occurrence and periods of high water temperatures in summer. The scale of farmed fish mortality is increasing due to the complex effects of these factors. Increased damages due to fish mortality not only have severe economic impacts on the aquaculture industry, but the social costs of responding to the damage and follow-up measures also increase. various active responses can reduce the mortality damage in fish farms such as improving the management skills in aquaculture, improved species breeding, efficient food management, disease prevention, proactive responses, and system-wide improvements. This review article analyzes the large-scale mortality cases occurring in fish cage farms on the southern coast of Korea and proposes measures to mitigate mortality and enhance responses to such scenarios.

Discrimination of Flaviviruses with High Frequency of Infection in Asian Countries: Epitope Prediction by Bioinformatic Approaches (아시아 국가 내에서 감염빈도가 높은 플라비바이러스의 구별: 생물정보학적 접근을 통한 항원결정기 예측)

  • Recently, global warming has widened the habitat of mosquitoes and infection chances for mosquito-borne diseases are increasing. Flavivirus is a typical mosquito-borne virus. Flaviviruses with a relatively high frequency of infection in Asian countries include Zika, Dengue, and Japanese encephalitis viruses. Although distinctive diagnosis of flaviviruses is required because the symptoms and therapeutic method differ, there is no diagnostic method that can distinguish them accurately yet. In this study, we propose distinctive diagnosis method of flaviviruses using informations and analysis tools constructed in bioinformatic databases. The envelope protein and non-structural protein 1 which are useful protein for the immuno-diagnostics of three flaviviruses were selected. Their homology was analyzed by multiple sequence alignments and epitope candidates consisting of 10-15 amino acids were selected. Finally two epitopes were suggested to be most useful by immunogenicity analysis and 3D structure prediction. These approaches and results are expected to be great value in the distinctive diagnosis of three flaviviruses with a high frequency of infection in Asian countries.

Rural Amenity Contents in the Textbooks of Agricultural High School (농업계고등학교 교과서를 통해 살펴본 농촌어메니티 교과내용)

  • 본 연구는 농업 농촌의 미래세대 주역으로 활동하게 될 농업계 고등학교 학생들에게 교과서를 통한 학습기회 제공이 무엇보다 중요함에 따라, 그들이 배우고 있는 농업계고등학교 교과서를 대상으로 농촌어메니티 교과내용을 분석함으로써 농촌어메니티 및 녹색가치 구현에 대한 인식 중대를 도모하고 올바른 농업 농촌의 가치관을 형성시키는데 기여하고자 한다. 분석 교과서는 원예, 축산, 농기계, 식품가공 등 총 39종의 농업계 교과서를 대상으로, 농촌어메니티자원 37종을 활용한 어메니티 관점으로 내용분석이 이루어졌다. 그 결과 환경자원과 자연자원을 포함한 자연적 자원의 경우(대기질, 수질, 비옥한 토양, 미기후, 지형 등) 141개로 17.6%를 차지하고 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 역사자원, 경관자원을 포함한 문화적 자원(문화재, 전통건조물, 신앙공간 등)의 경우 219개로 27.4%를 나타내었다. 또한 시설자원, 경제활동자원, 공동체활동자원을 포함하는 사회적 자원(공동생활시설, 기반시설, 도농교류활동, 생활공동체활동 등)인 경우 440개, 55%인 것으로 나타나 전체 39종의 교과서를 대상으로 어메니티 관점으로 하여 교과내용을 분석한 결과 총 800개가 수록되어 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 내용분석은 제시유형(문장, 사진, 삽화, 그래프, 표), 교육적 성격(준비학습, 내용이해, 기능습득, 실습활동, 문제해결, 태도형성, 기타)을 기준으로 분석하여 해당 내용이 농촌어메니티를 적절하게 표현하였는지에 따라 판정 여부를 제시하였다. 또한 교과서를 유형별로 구분하여 분석해 본 결과 A유형의 교과서는 9권으로 351개의 내용분석이 이루어졌고, B유형의 교과서는 16권으로 322개의 내용분석이 이루어졌으며, C유형의 경우 14권으로 127개의 내용분석이 이루어졌다. A와 B유형 교과서는 농촌어메니티를 나타낼 수 있는 교과서 내용 요소가 많은 유형이고, C유형은 주로 기술 및 관리 기법 등과 관련된 내용의 교과서였다. 제시유형별 교과내용을 분석한 결과 A유형의 교과서에는 사진 185, 문장 125, 삽화 24 순으로 나타났으며, B유형에는 사진 144, 문장 136, 삽화 37개, C유형에는 사진 57, 문장 55, 삽화 11개의 순으로 나타났다. 교육적 성격별 분석결과 A유형, B유형, C유형 두 내용이해,에 대한 교과내용이 절대적으로 우선순위를 나타냈으며, B유형의 경우 기능습득에 대한 교육적 성격도 다소 높은 것으로 분석되었다.

The Early Impacts of the 'Hebei Spirit' Oil Spill on the Macrozoobenthic Communities in the Subtidal Area Around Tae-an, Western Coast of Korea (태안 허베이스피리트호 원유 유출사고가 대형저서동물군집에 미치는 초기영향)

  • In order to detect the early impacts of the Hebei Spirit oil spill on the subtidal macrozoobenthos, we conducted a benthic survey at 72 stations in the subtidal area of Tae-an, the eastern Yellow Sea from Dec. 18th 2007 to Dec. 22th after 10 days from the Hebei Spirit oil spill. A total of228 species from 72 stations was sampled with mean density of 561 ind $m^{-2}$ and mean biomass of 39.7 gww $m^{-2}$. In this study, Ampelisca occurred as a major dominant fauna in this survey, but did not appear around oil spill areas. Meanwhile some opportunistic polychaete worms like Prionospio bocki, Prionospio cirrifera appeared in the oil spill area, especially near coastal beaches. The overall abundance and biomass of macrozoobenthos decreased after oil spill. However some stations previously disturbed with sand extraction showed a similar macrozoobenthic community structure.

A Comparative Study on International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme(IBDP) Textbooks and Korean Textbooks by the 2015 Revised Curriculum -Focus on function from a mathematical modeling perspective- (우리나라 교과서와 International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme(IBDP) 교과서 비교·분석 -수학적 모델링의 관점에서 함수 영역을 중심으로-)

  • This study aimed to compare and analyze the number and characteristics of modeling problems in chapters related to function contents in International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) mathematics textbooks and Korean high school mathematics textbooks. This study implies how the textbooks contributed to the improvement of students' modeling competency. In this study, three textbooks from IBDP and all nine textbooks from the Korean 2015 revised curriculum were selected. All the problems in textbooks were classified into real-world problems and non-real-world problems. Problems classified as real-world problems were once again divided into word problems and modeling problems according to the need to set up mathematical models. Modeling problems were further categorized into standard applications and good modeling problems depending on whether all the necessary information was included in the problem-solving process. Among the 12 textbooks, the textbook with the most modeling problems was the IBDP textbook, 'Math: Applications and Interpretation', which accounted for 50.41% of modeling problems to the total number of problems. This textbook provided learners with significantly higher modeling opportunities than other IBDP and Korean textbooks, which had 2% and 9% modeling problem ratios. In all 12 textbooks, all problems classified as modeling problems appeared as standard applications, and there were no proper modeling problems. Among the six sub-competencies of mathematical modeling, 'mathematical analysis' and 'interpretation and evaluation of results' sub-competencies appeared the most with very similar number of modeling problems, followed by the 'mathematization'. It is expected that the results of this study will help compare the number and ratio of modeling problems in each textbook and provide a better understanding of which modeling sub-competencies appear to what extent in the modeling problems.

Temporal and Spatial Characteristics of Sediment Yields from the Chungju Dam Upstream Watershed (충주댐 상류유역의 유사 발생에 대한 시공간적인 특성)

  • A physically based semi-distributed model, SWAT was applied to the Chungju Dam upstream watershed in order to investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of watershed sediment yields. For this, general features of the SWAT and sediment simulation algorithm within the model were described briefly, and watershed sediment modeling system was constructed after calibration and validation of parameters related to the runoff and sediment. With this modeling system, temporal and spatial variation of soil loss and sediment yields according to watershed scales, land uses, and reaches was analyzed. Sediment yield rates with drainage areas resulted in $0.5{\sim}0.6ton/ha/yr$ excluding some upstream sub-watersheds and showed around 0.51 ton/ha/yr above the areas of $1,000km^2$. Annual average soil loss according to land use represented the higher values in upland areas, but relatively lower in paddy and forest areas which were similar to the previous results from other researchers. Among the upstream reaches, Pyeongchanggang and Jucheongang showed higher sediment yields which was thought to be caused by larger area and higher fraction of upland than other upstream sub-areas. Monthly sediment yields at the main outlet showed same trend with seasonal rainfall distribution, that is, approximately 62% of annual yield was generated during July to August and the amount was about 208 ton/yr. From the results, we could obtain the uniform value of sediment yield rate and could roughly evaluate the effect of soil loss with land uses, and also could analyze the temporal and spatial characteristics of sediment yields from each reach and monthly variation for the Chungju Dam upstream watershed.

A Study on the Development of Experiential Nature Education Program in the Urban Forest Park - A Case Study of Yeongheung Park in Suwon - (도시 산림공원의 체험형 자연교육 프로그램 개발 연구 - 수원 영흥공원을 대상으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and study an experiential natural education program that could emphasize the importance of the natural environment by providing natural experience opportunities using the natural resources of the urban forest parks using Youngheung Park in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province as a target site. The research target was limited to Suwon Yeongheung Park, which had the potential to become a place for education, where urban forest conservation and sustainable use already coexist. The natural education resources derived by surveying and analyzing the basic environment and the ecology of plants and animals in Suwon Yeongheung Park were organized to establish program goals, directions, and themes. Suwon Yeongheung Park is a water-rich forest that forms an ecological system of wetlands, including rice paddies, muknon wetlands, and dungbun, near a valley area. The U-shaped walkway was smoothly formed along the ridge and includes Doran-gil, which is among the Palochrome Road, designated by the city of Suwon. The soil is acidic, with a pH 4.40, due to urban pollution and acid rain, and is not good for plant growth. Most of the artificial forests, natural forests, and arable land were found using land use and extant life surveys. Old trees were distributed in artificial forests, the oak clusters in natural forests, and the fields and darrinones were distributed in the arable areas. As the forest vegetation declined, the cedar forest was underway, and the cedar trees and red bean pear trees were cultivated due to their adaptability to the urban environment. There are 13 large of 180 sacks, one being 109 centimeters in diameter, the largest silvery tree, and 105 oak trees, provide food and shelter for animals. Six species of waterfowl that used the 22 kinds of forest wetlands, while four species of amphibians and two species of reptiles reside in the wetlands. Natural Monument No. 327, Mauryuk, Class II Endangered Wildlife, was also observed in the wetlands. Eight other species of surface dragonflies and three species of butterflies were observed. By systemizing the resources, members, and characteristics of the forest ecosystems in Suwon Yeongheung Park based on five criteria, the program for a hands-on natural education was presented with the aim of understanding the urban forest ecosystem in Suwon Yeongheung Park, having an affinity with the city, and recognizing its relationship with the community and society. However, further research is needed as there are limitations of research on programs characterized by different ages and classes.

The Effect of Hydrology on Phytoplankton Assemblages and Its Adaptive Strategies in Lake Hwaseong, Estuarine Reservoir with Seawater Exchange, Korea (해수유통 중인 간척담수호 화성호에서 식물플랑크톤의 군집과 적응전략에 대한 수문학적 영향)

  • A survey was carried out to understand the influence of hydrology on the composition, abundance and adaptive strategies of phytoplankton in artificial Lake Hwaseong, an estuarine reservoir with seawater exchange through a sluice. Samples were collected seven times from May to October 2012. Hydrological events (seawater exchange, rainfall) resulted in a wide variation in salinity along with nutrients and turbidity. Shifts in the dominant phytoplankton composition occurred on every survey. Chlorophyll-a ranged from 9.7 to $104.1{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$. Multivariate analysis allowed us to identify the four phases on phytoplankton community change. Phase I (May~June) was characterized by small-sized Gymnodinium sp. and Heterosigma akashiwo dominated in warm temperature and high salinity derived from seawater exchange, and followed by Cylindrotheca closterium blooms due to rainfall and winds during phase II (July and September). During phase III (August), the dominance of Oscillatoria spp. was correlated with high temperature and low salinity. Abundant cryptomonads were associated with lower temperature during phase IV (October). Adaptive strategies were identified in the phytoplankton as morphological and physiological characteristics. These strategies identified small-sized flagellates as CR-strategists, fast-growing opportunistic species, which might favor the weak stratification of lake due to the seawater exchange during phase I and IV. Dominant species during phase II and III were characterized with R-strategists, medium-sized stress-tolerant species, which might favor turbulence by river flow. The results indicate that stronger stratification following the termination of seawater exchange for the freshening might intensify the predominance of smaller flagellates. In conclusion, this study suggests that hydrology may drive phytoplankton community change and blooms through the controls of salinity, turbulence and nutrients.

Genotypic Investigation of Multidrug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa from Clinical Isolates in Korea, 2010 (2010년도 국내 임상에서 분리한 다제내성 녹농균의 유전자형 조사)

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic Gram-negative bacterium that causes serious infection, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Also, P. aeruginosa possessing carbapenem-resistant metallo-${\beta}$-lactamases (MBL) has been reported with increasing frequency in Korea. We therefore analyzed the level of multidrug-resistant clinical P. aeruginosa isolated from a secondary hospital in Korea in 2010. A total of 92 isolates of P. aeruginosa were collected from Sahmyook Medical Center in 2010. Susceptibility to antimicrobial agents was determined by analysis of the minimum inhibitory concentration test; the inhibitor-potentiated disk diffusion (IPD) test was performed for MBL detection. RAPD-PCR was used for genotyping to rapidly characterize P. aeruginosa strains isolated from clinical patients. The percentages of non-susceptible isolates were as follows: 40.2% to ceftazidime, 58.7% to meropenem, 56.5% to gentamicin, 46.7% to tobramycin, 62.0% to ciprofloxacin and 97.8% to chloramphenicol. The 29 multidrug-resistant strains were screened by the IPD test: of the 21 PCR-positive isolates, 19 were IPM-1 producers and 2 were VIM-2 producers. Among the 19 IMP-1-producing P. aeruginosa isolates, 16 isolates showed similar patterns, and three different banding patterns were observed. The proportion of IMP-1-producing multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa from clinical isolates steadily increased in this secondary hospital in Korea in 2010. This study provides information about the antimicrobial-resistant patterns and genotype of multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa isolated from clinical isolates in Korea, 2010.
