A 4-year old Korean-native cow of third parturition delivered an deformed calf with congenital anasarca and hypoplasia of the extremity at Muan County in Chonnam Province. At parturition, the dam showed amniotic fluid approximately two times more than that at the normal and also occurred severe dystocia. The anomaly died before parturition was 82 cm long and weighed 25 kg. It was difficult to recognize the neck and face of the anomaly due to severe edema and the stretched tongue through mouth was found. The shape of the extremity was recognizable and the systemic hypoplasia of the body with marked edema was found. At necropsy, there was a large amount of serous fluid both in pleural and peritoneal cavity. Also the fluid was contained some of yellowish granular materials and diffusely was fulfilled in all subcutaneous tissue. There was a partial opening in diaphragm which was resulted in the protrusion of approximately half of liver toward peritoneal cavity. There were two kidneys (15${\times}$21 and 13${\times}$18 cm) on the left which were enlarged and relatively larger than the right one (13${\times}$9 cm). In addition, there were found slight to moderate hepatomegaly and splenomegaly with slight congestion, and diffuse edema of intestinal serosa. Lung (32${\times}$49 mm) with marked hypoplasia was smaller than the size of heart (56${\times}$45mm). Serological test to the dam showed relatively high antibody titer (>64) to Akabane virus which might be involved in the outbreak of the deformed Korean-native calf as one of many causative agents.

A calf with derodidymus was delivered from a 3-year old Korean-native cow with abortion last ime at Jangheong area in Chonnam Province. The anomaly with body weight of 35 kg was born t the normal time of parturition. During the parturition, however, the calf with twin head was onfirmed and the complete amputation between fore and hind limb was inevitably carried out or safety of the dam. The calf had normal skeleton and extremities but had two heads and cervical vertebrae divided from upper thoracic part. At necropsy, there were found totally 3 pairs of ore limbs including two pairs of hypoplastic ones hided in the thoracic limb and also found one air of sternum. One head had incomplete torsion or unilateral hypoplasia of mandible with artly hypoplastic skull. There were marked fusion and torsion from cervical to 3rd thoracic vertebra. No abnormality was found on all organs in the pleural and abdominal cavities except a rectal stricture formed at 5 cm away from the atresia ani.
This study was performed to investigate the relation between birth weight and survivability on the production of cloned Hanwoo calves. The 580 cloned embryos were transferred into the 293 recipients. The pregnancy rate of the cloned embryos was 72.3% at 50 days after embryo transfer, and then the rate was dramatically decreased. The mean gestation lengths were 287 days in both clone (range of$279{\sim}295$ days) and artificial insemination (AI, range of $255{\sim}293$ days) calves, respectively. The mean birth weight of cloned calves (30.3kg) was significantly higher compared to that of AI calves (23.7kg) (p<0.05). Among the cloned calves, the birth weight was not different in both normal delivery (n=17, 29.9kg) and caesarean section (n=14, 32.3kg). The weight, however, was significantly higher in the clones (n=18, 32.8kg) dead within 175 days than that of the clones (n=11, 28.3kg) alive more than 175 days after birth (p<0.05). Interestingly, all cloned calves weighed <15kg (n=5) or >35kg (n=9) at birth have been dead within 175 days from the date of birth. The causes of death in the cloned calves were premature birth (n=2, 10.0%), abnormal function of lung and liver (n=2, 10.0%), abnormal function of lung (n=4, 20.0%), malformation (n=4, 20.0%), unknown (n=4, 20.0%), and sudden death syndrome (n=4, 20.0%), respectively. Our findings suggest that normal birth weight is one of the most important factors to survive more than 6 months in cloned calves.
The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of time of vaccination in recipients on the pregnancy rate and the viability of calves derived from embryos produced in vitro. In experiment 1, control group was non-vaccinated, group 1-1 received vaccine (Pfizer, Exton, PA, USA) during 0$\sim$4 weeks and group 1-2 received vaccine during 4$\sim$8 weeks before embryo transfer. The pregnancy rates in the control (42.6%) and group 1-2 (45.3%) were significantly higher (p<0.05) than that in the group 1-1 (32.6%). However, the abortion rates were similar among groups (4.9 to 13.5%). In experiment 2, the recipients received embryos produced in vitro were non-vaccinated (control) or vaccinated. Vaccine was injected during 0$\sim$4 weeks (group 2-1) and 4$\sim$8 weeks (group 2-2) before parturition. The incidence of a disease in calves was significantly higher in the control (22.4%) than in other vaccinated groups (2.2% and 3.1%, p<0.05). The mortality of calves in the control is 27.6%, which was significantly higher than that of group 2-1 and group 2-2 (11.1% and 7.8%).
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of various factors such as recipient parity, delivery season, offspring number, pregnancy period, delivery type, midwifery type and dystocia, on the viability of calves derived from embryos produced in vitro. There was no difference in the abnormality of calves among treatments ($0\~25\%$, respectively). The incidence of a disease was significantly higher in delivered by multiparous $(40\%)$ than nulliparous$(9.9\%)$, in eutocia than dystocia group, in delivered on spring $(20.4\%)$ and winter $(22.7\%)$ than summer$(4.3\%)$ and autumn $(0\%)$, in single offspring $(18.4\%)$ than twin offsprings $(6.7\%)$, and in eutocia group $(17\%)$ than dystocia $(2.7\%)$, respectively (p<0.05). The rate of mortality was significantly higher when transferred into mulliparous $(22.3\%)$ than multiparous$(0\%)$, when were delivered within 270 day $(53.3\%)$ than over 270 day $(14.3\~16.1\%)$, when were dystocia $(41.7\%)$ than eutocia$(14.1\%)$ group, when were induced delivery $(44.4\%)$ than self-delivery $(18.1\%)$, when were non-midwifery $(34\%)$ than midwifery$(10.8\%)$, and when delayed midwifery $(31.6\%)$ than earlier midwifery$(11.5\%)$, respectively (p<0.05). The present study suggested that the proper treatment of parturition may be increased the viability of calves derived from in vitro.

An abnormal female Korean native calf at five months age with five legs was observed macroscopically and radiographically. External features included two normal forelimbs, and hindlimbs, and an abnormal forelimb which was underdeveloped. A rudimentary forelimb, which was attached to the pectoral region, was observed at the right axillary part. The extra forelimb was scapural and humeral meromelia. It consisted of an underdeveloped forearm (antebrachium), several carpal bones (three bones), large metacarpal bone (Mc. 3 + 4), and two digits with two hoofs. The proximal, middle and distal phalanges, proximal and distal sesamoid bones are normal.
