  • Bubble growth on microheater has been experimentally investigated in this study. The experiment was performed using platinum micro heaters having dimensions of $100{\times}10{\times}0.2{\mu}m^3$ with constant heat flux. A high speed video camera was used to observe bubble growth at 250 frames per second. Microheater temperature was measured at the rate of 300Hz with a data acquisition system. When heater temperature was $139^{\circ}C$ a bubble was nucleated in the liquid FC-72. The temperature profiles and the high speed camera images were combined to explain heat transfer and bubble growth on microheater.

  • To investigate varying wave impact pressure exerting at the crest wall of rubble mound seawall, depending on breaking wave properties, regular waves with different wave periods were generated. Wave velocity fields and void fraction were measured using bubble image velocimetry and simple combined wave gauge system (Na and Son, 2021). For the waves with shorter wave period, maximum horizontal velocity was less reduced compared to incident wave speed while breaking-induced air entrainment was occurred intensely, leading to a significant reduction of wave impact pressure at the crest wall. For the waves with longer wave periods, less air wave entrained and the wave structure followed a flip-through mode (Cooker and Peregrine, 1991), resulting in an abrupt increase of the impact pressure.

  • Bubble growth on microheater has been experimentally investigated in this study. The experiment was performed using platinum microheaters having dimensions of 300 ${\mu}m$ or 50 ${\mu}m$ in length, 20 ${\mu}m$ or 5 ${\mu}m$ in width, and $0.2{\pm}0.01$ ${\mu}m$ in thickness. A high speed video camera was used to observe bubble growth at 2,000 frames per second. Microheater temperature was measured at the rate of 300 Hz. with a data acquisition system. Bubble nucleation frequency increased with working fluid temperature. Although the slope of temperature drop was similar in all cases, the magnitude of temperature drop was different. The temperature profiles and the high speed camera images were combined to explain temperature drop.

  • Until now, several empirical models for assessing the damage due to TNT explosions have been proposed. A set of analytical solutions for the time-dependent radius of an expanding fire-ball after detonation of TNT was obtained by solving the continuity, Euler (momentum), and energy equations with a "polytrope" assumption at the fire-ball center. The shock waves developed from the rapid expansion of a fire-ball under water were obtained by using the KirkwoodBBethe hypothesis. The calculated period of bubble oscillation and the maximum radius of the bubble resulting from the fire-ball due to a violent underwater TNT explosion were in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • The effects of free surface on vortex shedding phenomena around a bluff body were studied by both numerical simulation and flow visualization experiments. A vortex method, which approximates the vorticity field as the sum of discrete vortices; was used for the numerical simulation. Flow visualization experiments were performed in the KRISO cavitation tunnel. Hydrogen bubble was used as illumination material. Free surface elevation was also measured during experiments. The hydrodynamic drag and lift were predicted by numerical simulation. The predicted period of vortex shedding was compared with the results of experiments.
