  • A series of model tests were conducted to investigate how the number of reinforcement layers, stiffnesses, types of reinforcement material and buried depth of a flexible pipe can affect bearing capacity-settlement curve at a loose sand foundation. In the test results, whereas the type of failure in unreinforced sand was local shear, the type of failure, for model tests with more than 2 reinforcement layers in loose sand, was general shear: The number of the optimum reinforcement layers was found to be two: Stiffness and type of reinforcement were more important than the maximum tensile strength of reinforcement in improving bearing capacity. When the depth of buried pipe from the sand surface was less than the width of the footing, test results showed that both bearing capacity and ultimate bearing capacity of buried pipe in unreinforced sand significantly decreased, and the type of failure in the reinforced sand changed from general shear to local shear.

  • The 3D numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the settlement behavior of flexible mat foundations subjected to vertical loads. Special attention is given to the improved analytical method (YS-MAT) that reflects the mat flexibility and soil spring coupling effect. The soil model captures the stiffness of the soil springs as well as the shear interaction between the soil springs. The proposed method has been validated by comparing the results with other numerical methods and a field measurement on mat foundation. Through comparative studies, the settlement of the proposed method was in relatively good agreement with those of a field measurement and other numerical methods. The results permit us to estimate the response of the mat foundation subjected to vertical loads that should be taken into account in the combination of mat flexibility and soil continuity characteristics.

  • Improper backfill materials and compaction controls under pipelines have become one of the major causes of failure in many sewage pipeline systems. A study on backfill materials and compaction controls has been considered for a long time. However, structural supporters under the pipe were recently concerned because of pipeline repair and maintenance. This paper presents a prefabricated plastic foundation for supporting a sewage pipe system and increasing the performance function of the pipes. Several analytical models for the plastic foundations were investigated using finite-element program, ABAQUS, for checking safety. Comparing with the results of analyses, some of economic design sections based on the sizes of pipe diameters, 600mm, 700 and 600mm, were evaluated. These results could be applied to a pipeline system with a prefabricated plastic foundation with respect to pipe diameters and buried depths.

  • The effect of raft flexibility on piled raft foundations in sandy soil was investigated using a numerical analysis and an analytical study. The investigation's emphasis was the load sharing between piles and raft following the raft rigidity (KR), end-bearing conditions. The case of individual piles and subsequently the response of groups of piles was analyzed using a 3D FEM. This study shows that the αpr, load-sharing ratio of piled raft foundations, decreases as the vertical loading increases and as the KR decreases. This tendency is more obvious when using friction piles compared to using end-bearing piles. The effect of raft rigidity is found to be more significant for the axial force distribution - each pile within the foundations has almost similar axial forces of the pile head with a flexible raft; however, each pile has different values with rigid rafts, especially with the end-bearing piles. The axial force of the pile base with floating piles shows similar point-bearing resistance for all the piles; however, it shows different values with end-bearing piles. The differential settlement ratio of rafts showed a larger value with lower KR.

  • This paper is to investigate the bearing capacity and the failure mechanism of slope subjected to strip surcharges adjassent to embankment slope of sandy soil. Parametric model tests under plain strain condition were performed by changing width of footing, relative density of slope materials, and position of footing from the crest of slopes. For model tests, Jumunjin standard sand was used as the slope material and its relative density was 45% and 70%, respectively. The angle of slope was formed with 1 : 1.5 and 1 2. Rigid model footings, made of aluminuu were used with their widths of 4, 7, 10 and 12cm. For the position of model footing, position ratios, distance of model footing from the crest of slope divided by footing width, were 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Failure mechanism was observed by using ink colored sands and markers inserted in model slopes. Ultimate bearing capacity obtained from tests was analyzed and compared with limit equilibrium method, limit analysis method and empirical equation. Characteristics of load-settlement curves and failure mechanism were also analyzed and compared with the existing theories. Thus, their effects on ultimate bearing capacity of model footing adjacent to slope were assessed.

  • Onshore wind farms having several problems, difficult to secure a building site and incur the enmity of the people. Therefore, offshore wind farms are increasingly expected, because there are huge resource and large site in offshore. If huge wind turbines are constructed, the offshore wind power base is concerned about subsidence. In order to confirm the ground stability, estimation of subsidence is necessary. In this paper, the subsidence is predicted by continuity model when the gravity and the mono-pile base are constructed on soft ground. The FLAC 3D, three dimensional FDM program, was adopted to analysis subsidence. Input factors are yielded by geological information at the yeompo quay in ulsan and the results of laboratory experiments. It has been compared that the original ground with improved ground under the gravity base, and constructed mono-pile under the mono-pile base.

  • In this study, the characteristics of bearing capacity and deformation of intermediate soils are investigated through centrifuge tests. The experimental parameters are footing width, initial stress condition of soils and relative loading rate defined relationship of loading rate and permeability of soils. It is examined that loading rate influences on the bearing capacities and deformations. Based on the test results, some problem of existing specification are introduced in the view of related loading rates and load intensities. Especially it is showed that load intensities magnitude rlre reversed in the same settlement ratio(s/B(%)), due to partial drained effect as well as loading rates in undrained con dition based on the excess pore pressure and deformations measured under loading.

  • In this paper, numerical analyses were conducted on piled raft foundation settlement and pile bearing characteristics in soft ground. Results obviously showed longer and larger piles developed end bearing capacity values, but also showed the load of the central pile is larger than the surrounding piles in a group formation. Additionally, after pile yielding, the load carrying capacity exists as a raft. Moreover, results showed no transverse displacement according to embedment depth for the single pile case, but larger transverse displacements for deeper embedment depths.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate behavior characteristics of soil-cement piles in composite foundations through computer analysis. The soil-cement piles with cushion subjected to the vertical central loading only were analyzed using the program - “ABAQUS”. The investigation was conducted for various conditions including soil property, pile dimension, replacement ratio, pile/soil modular ratio, and load intensity. The results of analysis provided not only the load transfer and settlement behaviors but also the effective pile length and load distribution between a pile and soil. It was concluded that in the design of composite foundations, the modular ratio and replacement ratio are two design parameters.
