To investigate the condition of infectious rate of fascioliasis in the farm animals. This survey was carried out, by the interdermal reaction from different animals, ages and pestures in Daejeon Suburbs and Cattle market and Abattoir. The average positive rate of infectious reaction were 31.0% in Korean Cattle, 38,7% in dairy Cattle, 33.8% in Korea native Goats and 26.9% in dairy Goat. The positive rate was higher at the age of 2~6 that compares with at age of yearling. From survey on the river side area, valley and wet area, the rate of positive was occured higher, than from plain, high land and in case of animals have not been grazing. And the detective rate of liver fluke among the positive reaction was occured 92.5% in Korean Cattle and 94.7% in Korea native Goat.
Human anisakiasis may occur after ingestion of raw marine flesh infected with nematode larvae of Anlsi, hidae. Anisakiasis caused by the migration of the larva into the wall of stomach, small intestine and other portion has been reported in Korea. This prospective study was made of all cases referred to parasitological laboratory in Cheju-do between. Tune 1989 and June 1992. Gastric anisakiasis was confirmed if larvae invading the gastric wall were observed by gastrofiberscopy One hundred and seven cases were diagnosed, most of which were in 30-49 years old. Most of the patients complained acute epigastric pain with history of eating raw marine fish. This symptom usually occurred about 12 hours to 1 day after ingestion of infected marine fish. Edema, erosion or ulcer of the mucosa and hemorrhage from the gastric wall were observed in the involved areas. Ninety larvae removed from the stomach were identified; the larva of Anisqkis siwlex was the most prevalent species, and the Iarva of Pseudntewanoua decipien was also detected. The important species of marine fish from which the patients became infected was demonstrated as yellow corvina, sea eel, ling, cuttle fish, yellowtail and others. Five species of marine fish as a possible source of infection were examined, and Anisakis simplex larvae and Pseunotewqnoua decipirens larvae were collected from the mackerel and rock cod. This study demonstrates that anisakiasis is recognized as a public health problem in Korea.
The prevalence of head louse (Pediculus hamanus var. capitis) infestation in preschool and school children in 9 urban and 8 rural areas of Korea, was investigated. Of 11,865 children who were examined for head lice and nits, 2,900 (24.4%) pere found infested. The over-all infestation rate of rural children, 58.9%, was higher than that of urban children, 14.4%. There also existed significant differences in the infestation rate among various regions of urban as well as rural areas. Females were more infested than males. But there was no difference in infestation rate in either sex of Preschool alee. The infestation rate increased gradually from the age of 6, reached a plateau between 9∼12 years of age and thereafter slowly decreased. The infestation rate of an orphanage children was higher than that of general childhood population. Health education and mass-delousing attempt are urgently required to lower such a high prevalence of head louse infestation in Korea.
In order to investigate the epidemiological situation of intestinal parasite infections in Lao PDR, parasitological surveys were carried out on a national scale including 17 Provinces and the Vientiane Municipality. A total of 29,846 stool specimens were collected from primary schoolchildren in May 2000 June 2002 and examined once with the cellophane thick smear technique. The cumulative egg Positive rate For intestinal helminthes was 61.9%, BV species, the rate for As caris lumbricoides was 34.9%, hookworm 19.1%, Trichuris trichiura 25.8%,Opisthorchis viverrini 10.9%, Taenia spp. 0.6% and Hymenolepis spp. 0.2%. The northern mountainous regions suck as Phongsaly, Huaphan or Saysomboune Province showed higher prevalence(over 70%) of soil- transmitted helminthes. The regions along the Mekong River such as Khammuane, Saravaue or Savannakhet Province showed higher prevalence(over 20%)of fish-borne parasites. On the other hand, Schistosoma mekongi eggs were detected from1.7% of schoolchildren only in Champassak Province, a previously known endemic area. The highest prevalence was noted in Phongsaly Province(96.0%) and the lowest in Bolikhamxay Province(27.5%). An additional smal1-scale survey by cellophane anal swab detected Enterobius vermicularis eggs in 35.7% of 451 schoolchildren aged 6-8 in Khammuane, Vientiane, Champassak Province and the Vientiane Municipality. Meanwhile, the mean blood hemoglobin level of hootrworm-infected children was not lower than that of hookworm-uninfected children, suggesting that nutritional factors are more important than parasite infection per se. Nevertheless, the above results indicate that a nationwide parasite control project is necessary to reduce possible morbidity of parasitic diseases in the country.

Insect pests were surveyed in 5 Rice paddy field areas of Organic paddy field and conventional paddy field. At the each rice-growth period, the occurrence rate of 'Small brawn plant hopper was high at the case of duck raising and rice bran farming on middle stage of rice paddy field in Gang-Hwa region. The occurrence rate of Rice water weevil was high at the conventional paddy field on the early stage of rice paddy field in Yeo-Ju region. In the Hong-Seong region, the occurrence rate of 'Rice water weevil' and 'Green rice leafhopper' was high at the 'duck raising compare to the conventional farming on the early stage of rice paddy field. According to each period, the occurrence rate of insect was high at late stage of rice paddy field, and there was no difference between each region. It showed high-occurrence tendency at duck pasture farming rice paddy field. The major natural enemies were spiders and parasites. Theridiidae and Linyphiidae were highly occurred on the conventional farming rice paddy field in Hong-Seong. Web builders containing Theridiidae, Linyphiidae and Tetragnathidae was occurred more than wandering spiders containing Lycosidae, Clubionidae and Pisauridae at various regions, and then occurrence of spiders was different at the various regions but was not different at each farming system.
A survey of canine heartworm (nirofilaria inmitis) infections among German shepherds in five areas of South Korea was performed from October 1994 to August 1995 using a microfilarial test (modified Knott's test) and an antigen test (DiroCHEKⓑ Synbiotics, USA). The infection rate of 127 German shepherds (71 males and 56 females) was 10.2% (13/127) by the microfilarial test, but was 28.3% (36/127) by the antigen test, revealing that 24 of the 36 antigen-positive dogs were microfilaria-negative in the peripheral blood . All dogs that were microfilaria-positive were also antigen-positive. Three of the microfilaria-negative and antigen-positive dogs contained 4-15 adult heartworms in the heart and pulmonary arteries upon necropsy. The infection rate among German shepherds was the highest in Hoengsong-gun (Kangwon-do, 84.4%) , while those of Yechon-gun (Kyongsangbuk-do) and Chungwon-gun (Chungchongbuk-do) areas were 20.0% and 14.3%, respectively. None of the dogs in the Kimhae-shi (Kyongsangnam-do) and Kwangiu areas was heartworm positive. The infection rates of heartworm in dogs at the age of 1-3, 4-6. and 7-11 years were 6.3%, 21.4%, and 56.4%, respectively. Based on the fact that the antigen test is more accurate than the microfilarial test, this study strongly indicates that the prevalence rate of canine heartworm in Korea may be higher than previously reported (3.1-23.0%) which utilized microfilarial tests.
The epidemiological status of ascariasis was analyzed in 8 rural villages in Korea, through observation of its epidemiological parameters such as prevalence, worm burden and basic reproductive rate. Total 978 inhabitants were subjected to stool examination and recovery of worms after chemotherapy with pyrantel pamoate. The results were as follows: 1. The worm positive rate in each village was 16.5~79.5%, while the egg positive rate was 9~18% lower, 3.3~66.7%. The average worm burden (among all inhabitants) ranged from O. 21 to 8. 44 by villages and the frequency of cases with each worm burden showed negative binomial distributions with 'k' values of O. 38-0. 54. 2. The prevalence rates (worm) in each village was almost identical with the theoretical ones from Anderson and May's equation; $p=1-(1+M^*/k)^{-k}$, where 'p' is worm prevalence and '$M^*$' equilibrium average worm burden. The basic reproductive rate 'R' was calculated from 1.03 to 2.11. lt is suggested that, although 'R' in lower endemic areas is approaching to the breakpoint of reinfection (R=1), control programs of ascariasis in Korea should be continued until it becomes below the level nationwidely.

Purpose : Enterobiasis is probably one of the most common parasitic infection world-wide. Human is the only known host of Enterobius vermicularis. Children are more commonly infected with Enterobius vermicularis than adults and infections are commonly recurred. In Korea, there is a high prevalence. So, we performed this study to evaluate the present status of Enterobius vermicularis infection among children in the Masan, Changwon areas and to determine the efficacy of flubendazole against this parasitic nematode. Methods : From November to December, 1997, urban and rural elementary school children and urban preschool children were examined for the presence of Enterobius vermicularis egg. All the children were examined once by an adhesive cellotape anal swab technique in the early morning at home by their parents guided by specific instructions for the technique. Results : 1) A total of 644 adhesive cellotape anal swab specimens was collected from 205 urban elementary school children, 290 rural elementary school children and 145 urban preschool children. Among them, 114(17.7%) were positive for Enterobius vermicularis eggs. There was no significant differences in the rate with regard to sex. 2) In the preschool children, the egg detection rate was 42(29.0%) out of 145 children. This rate was significantly higher compared with 72(14.4%) of 499 school children. 3) The egg detection rates in the rural and urban school children were 15.2, 13.7% respectively. There was no significant difference in both groups. In the 3rd grade and below in elementary school children, there was a higher rate compared with above 4th grade group. 4) In day care center where egg detection rate was high as 41%, the children were given two doses of 100mg flubendazole every 3 weeks, including staffs and family members. After treatment, egg detection rate fatted as 6%. Conclusion : Our data demonstrated that there was high prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis infection. In the light of these results, it is necessary to examine and treat children as soon as possible.
The Hongcheon river system knows down through the Hongcheon area of Kangwon-do, and reaches to the Cheongpyeong "Dam in Kyonggi.do. Stool specimens from the inhabitants residing along the Hongcheon river basin were examined to detect infection rates of Metagonimus sp. , and the intermediate hosts were collected to detect larval stages. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Thirty-nine (33 males and 6 females) out of 529 (314 males and 215 females) inhabitants were infected with Metagonimus sp., showing a total positive rate of 7.4%. 2. In eight areas surveyed, the specimens from Kulji.ri of Bukbang-myon at the middle part of the river showed the highest positive rate of 26.9% (14 positives out of 52) (males; 38.2%), The specimens from Mogog-ri of Seo-myon at the downstream of the river showed a positive rate of 10.4%(13 positives out of 125) (males; 12.6%). The positive rates in other regions were less than 10%. 3. The density of the first intermediate host, Semisulcospira sp., was the highest in Kulji.ri of Bukbang-myon (10~20 snails per $m^2$), and the infection rate of Metagonimus cercariae in the snails was 10.7%(13 positives out of 121 snails). 4. The infection rate of Metagonimus metacercariae in Zacco platypus, the freshwater Bish favorably eaten raw by the inhabitants, was 68.25 (30 positives out of 44 fishes), and most metacercariae were detected under the scales (89.95). 5. Adult flukes were obtained from the small intestine of a rat, 15 days after infection with the metacercariae obtained from Z. platypus. These adult cukes were identified to be the same species as thcse obtained from human hosts. By this survey, new endemic areas of Metagonimus infection were discovered along the Hongcheon river basin and the main source of infection was the fresh water ash, Z. platypus.
After evaluation of presence of nits and/or lice, PARATM aerosol (bioallethrin with piperonyl butoxide) was applied to 97 women and 43 girls, regardless of the results of their infestation, living at 2 separate institutions. Twelve days after the first treatment the second treatment was carried out and the presence of head lice was examined for the evaluation of treatment effect. Among total 140 subjects, 98(70,0%) were nit positive and 85(60.7%) were louse positive. The infestation rates of girls by nit(86.0%) and louse(86.0%) were higher than those of women, nit 62.9% and louse 49.5%(p<0.01). Also the detection rate of lice among nit positive subjects was higher in girls(100%) than in women(78.7%). On the second evaluation 12 days after treatment, 36(97.3%) out of 37 girls and 46(95.8%) out of 48 women were found louse-free. There was no difference in the treatment efficacy between the women and girls.
