  • This study is a qualitative study that analyzes the achievements and tasks of the cluster curriculum through the experiences of high school students who participated in the health cluster curriculum. As a result of the study, topics such as "Best Choice in a Competitive Environment," "Change in Health Perception," "Desire to Experience Various Health Worlds," "Limits in Non-regular Curriculum Operation," and "Feel Good Imagination" were derived. Through this study, students who participated in the cluster curriculum changed their perception of health positively, and confidence in career setting and career decision-making was improved through acquiring information on health care. However, supplementing the curriculum content in the specialized fields of health care, including classes and practice, was found to be a task to be improved. It is suggested that policy alternatives for career education should be developed by sharing the achievements and tasks raised in this study.

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate effects of foot massage and supportive communication provided by hospice volunteers on depression, anxiety, and mood of cancer patients who are going under intravenous chemotherapy at out patient department (OPD). Methods: A non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. Sixty-four participants were recruited from out-patients setting in a university hospital by a convenient sampling. Two trained- hospice volunteers first provided regular hospice volunteer service to 34 patients in the control group. Subsequently, foot massage and supportive communication were provided to 30 participants in the experimental group. After the intervention, all participants answered the structured questionnaire with visual analog scales on depression, anxiety, and mood including general characteristics. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, two sample t-test, and paired t-test by PASW 17. Results: After the intervention, changes in negative moods, i.e. strain and powerlessness in the experimental group were significantly different from those in control group; strain and powerlessness in the experimental group were significantly decreased by foot massage and supportive communication provided by hospice volunteers. Conclusion: The current findings provide an empirical evidence of a brief and efficacious intervention for cancer patients. Further studies are warranted with larger sample size to validate the effectiveness of foot massage and supportive communication as a solid intervention for cancer patients who are undergoing intravenous chemotherapy at OPD.

  • Objectives: Although many reports have been written on seasonal variations in mood and behavior in foreign countries, few reports have dealt with Korean adolescents, except medical students. The goal of this study was to estimate the frequency of seasonal variations in mood and behavior among Korean high school students. Methods: A total of 656 high school students living in southeastern Seoul participated in this study. The subjects were investigated with the Korean translated version of the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ), and their responses were evaluated for seasonal patterns in mood and behavior change according to Kasper's criteria to make SAD (seasonal affective disorder) or SSAD (subclinical seasonal affective disorder) diagnosis. Results: A total of 565 subjects completed the questionnaire and the responses (M:F=324:241) were collected and used for analysis. The mean age was 16.73 (SD=0.65) years, and mean global seasonality score 5.88 (SD=4.72). Of the respondents, 413 (73.1%) reported problems related with seasonal changes. Total prevalence rates were 13.6% for SAD, 10.8% for S-SAD. The estimated frequencies were 5.1% for summer SAD, 3.2% for summer S-SAD, 0.5% for winter SAD and 1.1% for winter S-SAD. The prevalence rate of summer SAD or S-SAD was higher than winter SAD or S-SAD. Conclusion: The subjects showed a higher prevalence rate of summer type than winter type in SAD or S-SAD. These results were similar to those of other studies carried out in East Asian countries. However, the unpleasant feelings resulting from high temperature and humidity in summer rather than depression may have influenced the results. Therefore, it is necessary to make new SAD criteria of the SPAQ suitable for East Asian countries.

  • Childhood and adolescent onset-bipolar disorders have higher rate of comorbidity with anxiety disorders as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorder. Obsessive compulsive disorder, social phobia, panic disorder, and separational anxiety disorder are common comorbid anxiety disorders with bipolar disorders in child and adolescent. Prospective and reliable data on temporal and causal relationship between the onset of bipolar disorders and the onset of comorbid anxiety disorders are still in debate. The authors report 2 adolescent cases with antidepressant induced-manic episodes with preceding anxiety symptoms. The authors suggest careful prescription of antidepressants for anxiety disorders, even for those who do not have definite past history or family history of bipolar disorders. Further comprehensive and prospective studies are requested for the temporal relationship and pharmacological guideline for comorbid bipolar disorders and anxiety disorder in child and adolescent.

  • The principle purpose of this research is to figure out whether the inhalation of Wood Essential oil (Chamaecyparis obtusa) affect not only human beings' concentration for surroundings but also change as to status of feelings. total number of subjects for this experimental are determined to be 66 (men 44 and women 22) among 85 adults who agreed to participate in this experiment after excluding 19 participants who were not able to smell scent due to flu and nasal inflammation. After both experimental group and control group being measured referring to their status of mood such as concentration, depression, vigor, fatigue, confusion, tension and anger, the experimental group is offered to get a piece of cotton that includes Wood Essential oil and they are asked to inhale it for 5 min. On the other hand, control group is offered to wait for the experimental group finishing inhaling wood Essential oil for 5 min. After 5 min, the status of mood from both groups were measured again. simultaneously, I conducted a survey targeting experimental group to see what their preferences are like regarding scent of wood essential oil. The experiment shows that the status of experimental group's concentration is improved about 0.94 point when compared to control group's. Moreover, Total mood disturbance is lower than control group's. Therefore it is proved that the inhalation of wood Essential oil alleviates overall status of mood. according to the analyses result of favor to scent for wood essential oil from experimental group, some of them who were positive got much better improvement when it comes to concentration and far more relieved on their feelings than those who weren't. Based from this result, it is definitely confirmed that there is a Phytoncide's psychophysiological effect which transcends the Placebo Effect generated by Phytoncide's positive image.
