  • Archival science is prior to explore meaning and role of record management in given environments rather than developing record management methodology. Electronic record environments don't merely mean to exchange record management medium from paper to digital. The most important point exploring in electronic record environments is not management skills or methods, but meaning of records and role of record management in contemporary society. All these days, however, the theories and methodologies has been developed focusing on written records and public records mainly in the deep-rooted influence of positivism. In such situations, the discussions of social memories can explore meanings and roles of record management in pluralistic society. Meanwhile, many articles in archival science has been widespread recognition that records will soon be just memories in terms of objective and neutral evidence. In recently, however, conviction on objectivity and neutrality of records has broken down by the influence of postmodernism on archival science. Therefore this article intends to explore the relationship between record and memory and to argue the roles of archival science for building social memories.

  • In archival discourse, social memory has been discussed for some time. Despite this, however, theoretical studies have not been prolific at all in the Korean archival community. Many Western scholars have argued that archivists should consider memory rather than records for archival preservation because the inclusiveness of the former will fill the gaps in the latter. Social memory that is shared and transmitted across generations in society would include the stories of marginalized groups of people who are often neglected in official documents. Archivists can reconstruct the diverse narratives of a variety of social groups based on social memory, and this would be their social responsibility. In this sense, it is archivists who exercise power regarding how history will be written in the future because they determine what would be preserved in archives: mainstream culture with official records or a broader spectrum of diverse stories of people in society. From this perspective, this paper intends to understand how memory is discussed in archival discourse and to review how archives and history are associated with memory in theories and practices.

  • Record & archives management is at the heart of archival science. We must be faithful to record & archives management. However, isn't there a paradox that arises the more faithful we are to record & archives management? The paradox is that 'being a responsible manager and efficiently managing records' is rather reduces the interest in the social existence of humans who create and use such records. Why do humans produce and use records? It may be because human beings have been living with the concept of records. The concept is 'the same as the design of thoughts'. There is no need to doubt this direction because as record & archives management develops, more valuable records are preserved more systematically, and they are been served with wider scope and appropriateness. However, if we observe this situation from a human point of view rather than record & archives management, we find that humans appearing in record & archives management are limited to the object of using records. If humans are perceived differently based on the hypothesis of reviewing from the ground up, we can encounter a unique context about the relationship between humans and records or between records and humans. If it reaches the norm that human beings have dignity that cannot be transferred to anyone, have the right to pursue happiness, and must live by enjoying freedom, equality, and social basic rights, in short, if human beings are recognized from a constitutional point of view, we can newly recognize the social role and direction of records. The constitution and international human rights norms document basic human rights as the final norm and clarify that it is the duty of the state to guarantee and practice them. The social role of records from a constitutional point of view is the practice of records that proliferate basic human rights. The practice of archiving, which multiplies basic human rights, may also be a civic consciousness required of experts, but on the other hand, it can be a professional way for archival studies. If record management is a two-lane round trip, it can be said that the interaction between record management and record practice, which multiplies basic human rights, is a pioneering four-lane round trip. This article examines the practice of archiving, which has been developed in and out of record & archives management, by clearly grasping the constitutional perspective from the perspective of archival studies, and examines the social role of archival studies in this context. The social role of archival studies is to provide new linguistic rules for archiving.

  • An archive is a "representation of actions and activities" that bears different effects depending on its purpose and intention. Also, various archival practices reinforce the political nature of the archive including the subject's purpose and intention. Such effects are not confined to a single event and its records but extend to broader society through interactions. This process is demonstrated more significantly in social conflicts in which stakeholders archive their actions and decision-making process as they compete with other parties. This study examines such archive politics through a case study of the "Ssangyong Motors Strike" in 2009. In "Ssangyong Motors Strike", multiple stakeholders vigorously produced records that reflected each subject's perspective, purpose, and intention throughout the lifespan of the event-prior to, during, and after the primary incident. This article pays particular attention to two archive cases from ex-post investigation and fact-finding processes. One was produced by the Special Investigation TF of Seoul Bar Association and the other by the Korean National Police Agency's Fact-finding Committee of Human Rights Violations. The two cases illustrate the concept of archive effect and the representation of political and social accountability through archiving. This study argues that archives and archival practices induced by the Ssangyong Motors Incident had extended archive effects leading to communal restoration, healing, and social progress beyond the resolution of the immediate conflict and problems.

  • Recently, a topic of Archival Science can be said 'paradigm shift'. Therefore, this study aims to establish a relationship between oral record and Archival Science through concept of the archiving 'social memory' related to paradigm shift of Archival Science. In addition, an active role theory by an archivist as main agent of archival oral record management reflecting the characteristics of oral record based on this will be supported. Especially, even if it has already been handled through previous studies, it will be focused on drawing new meaning by applying creative perspective. Main content of this study is as follows. Firstly, discussion will be progressed by establishing the concept of the archiving 'social memory'. This is related to the topic of 'paradigm shift' in the Archival Science. Despite that active research has been conducted among mainly archival researchers overseas, it has not been handled yet in Korea. Therefore, this study aims to determine to organize this part as detail purpose. Secondly, the point will be progressed with a special focus on collecting and planning stages among the stages of records management. A viewpoint of the Archival Science should start from the stage of collecting and planning the previous record of production point of time, and then should be reflected for acknowledging the subsequent stages. Therefore, collecting and planning are the most important, and this is closely connected with a characteristic of oral record which production means collecting. Thirdly, the concept of 'oral record' is established with the viewpoint of the Archival Science. The various documents have been producted through oral interview has been known to many oral history researchers as 'oral source'. It aims to conceptualize them as 'oral record' with the viewpoint of the Archival Science. Fourthly, it is an establishment of meaning why oral history should be handled in the Archival Science. It is necessary to rationalize the purpose and its appropriateness handling oral history in the Archival Science. It should clarify the reason why oral history is important in the Archival Science and what it means. This will help examine the meaning of the recording of 'oral record.' A characteristic of the oral record can be effectively revealed through the recording, and ultimately, it aims to be able to shed new light on the value of oral history and oral record. Finally, it defines the role of archivist in oral history. A point that archivist in oral history is not just an assistant who organizes and preserves oral records collected by researchers will be emphasized and persuaded. In this study, oral history study in the Archival Science which has obtained appropriateness by the theoretical discussion as above should be conducted in a connection with other studies without occupying oral history by the Archival Science and in a direction of the leap of Korean oral history study. If this is possible, it will contribute to development of the Archival Science and of study area expansion, enhancement of the role and potential of archivist, at the same time, eventually it will positively influence on oral history study.

  • In modern society, there remain underprivileged communities that do not perform their own archival activities and documentation. Thus, many outside citizen archivists take the role of documenting the lives and activities of such communities on their behalf. However, ensuring the partyhood of these citizen archivists who are not part of the community proves to be problematic. This study aims to analyze how outside citizen archivists acquire partyhood in the process of documenting underprivileged communities through a case study labeled "Citizen Archivist Training Project" in Wanwol-dong, an area in Busan with a huge prostitution business. First, the process of acquiring partyhood in the outside citizen archivists' documentation of underprivileged communities was divided into three stages, following the literature review process. Second, this partyhood acquisition process was investigated stage by stage through interviews with participants in the case study in Wanwol-dong. Third and finally, following the investigation's findings, the attitude and position outside citizen archivists should have and take, respectively, in documenting underprivileged communities were identified.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how the "memory approach" has affected archival methodology and activities, and suggest the directions of archival activities in each field. Although there have been many discussions on the memories and collective memories in Archival Studies, it is necessary to analyze them more practically from the viewpoint of archival activism. In this study, the memory approaches in archival discourse are classified into four categories in terms of archival activism; i) the role of archives as social memory organizations, ii) the memory struggle for finding out the truth of the past, iii) archival activities of restorative justice for people who suffer from trauma memories after social disasters and human rights violations, and iv) the memory process of communities' archiving for strengthening community identities. The meaning and issues are analyzed for each category, and the practice based on archival expertise and political and social practices are examined together as necessary competencies for archival activism.

  • 'Memory discourse' takes an important role in the paradigm shift of archival science. Memory points to the limitation of 'records as evidence' that had been assumed to be representable and redefines the record as an infinite interpretable medium by captured memory. Now, recordkeeping are given a new question as 'what world to remember' beyond 'how to remember the world' between 'visible' records and 'invisible' memories. And, the power of memory's personal, present, and everyday aspect is linked to the argument that the keeping of memory and records itself can take a social justice role. In this article, we examine the western archival science's memory discourse landscape comprehensively and reconstruct it to examine the possibility of memories' social justice or archival justice.
