  • Archival appraisal is a key area of archival science. This study aims to identify the knowledge structure of archival appraisal and propose appropriate translation terms. To this end, 34 entry terms related to archival appraisal were first extracted from 146 entries in the Encyclopedia of Archival Science, a leading encyclopedia in the field, and terminologies were categorized based on content analysis. Second, the contents described in the entries were assessed for each category, and the main concepts and flow of discussions were also examined. Third and last, suitable translations for each entry term were presented, and considerations were suggested for the translations, such as the application of appropriate principles of equivalence. Specifically, terms such as "records appraisal" and "archival appraisal" were recommended to be used separately.

  • In 2005, the National Archives of Korea (NAK) set up the Records Management Standards Plan in the process of public records management innovation and released 55 standards and guidelines based on this plan. This study is to evaluate the standardization for records management so far with a critical view and suggest implications for rebuilding standardization strategies. For evaluation, it analyses records management standardization policies and the status of standard development through NAK's standardization policy documents and interviews records managers in central government agencies via e-mail. The categories of evaluation are the selection for the standardization areas, the quality of standard content, the standardization procedures, and the policies for sustainable standardization. It evaluates qualitatively with criteria set up in each category and then suggests some recommendations for the improvement of records management standardization.

  • Student records are essential for the functional, social, and personal aspects of the university. However, it is difficult to systematically manage such records because of the vast amount produced by several agents, the decentralization of the university's records management system, and various types and forms produced. Despite acknowledging the importance of student records, Myongji University implements its records management system at a sluggish pace. This study defined students' records except for the administrative records of the university as "student-related records" and categorized them into education records, student creation and research records, and student activity records. After examining the best practices in Korea and abroad, we reviewed the current status of Myongji University's student records management system and proposed appropriate and comprehensive management plans accordingly.

Through repeated classification and categorization, the last category names were derived as facets. As a result, the faceted classification scheme for Korea related records are structured into 10 basic facets and 38 sub-facets.

  • The classification in the Records and Archives Sciences focuses on the contextual information in producing and utilizing records rather than their contents. This study aimed at designing an automatic records classification system to enable an automatic classification focusing on the aggregation of the context of records rather than the contents of individual record in the classification scheme, structured on the basis of business activities analyses for records reflecting the business activities. The automatic records classification system was designed to have mutual supplements by constructing the classification scheme and thesaurus together as the classification reference, as well as the aggregation of records that have been already classified. Additionally included are plans to apply the classified contextual information of records to the classification reference on the real-time base right after the category assignment of records to be classified. Although there are limitations as the designed system depends on the quality of the contextual information, it is considered that the system could lead to ensure that the contextual information of records should be more substantial.

Photographs provide valuable visual information about all parts of society, and a systematic management must be preceded to use these information. The management and preservation system of photographs should reflect the characteristics of photographic medium. The purpose of this study is to suggest appraisal criteria for photographic records based on the archival appraisal theories and the characteristics of photography. This study draws on traditional appraisal theories and some literatures for archival management of photographs. This study is organized as follows. The first section examines the concept and values of photographic records and the distinctiveness of appraising photographs. The second section analyzes the existing appraisal criteria for individual records. The third section designs appraisal classes of photographic records and proposes the criteria for each classes.

  • The present study aims at developing a policy framework for the long-term preservation of authentic digital records. To accomplish this, the study analyzed the main research outcomes from InterPARES(International Research on Permanent Authentic Records in Electronic System: IP). It has (1) selected major outcomes from IP project, (2) disassemble principles and guidelines suggested by IP into individual concepts and components, (3) rearranged them into a conceptual framework, which has been used as a basis for the policy framework, and finally (4) developed a policy framework for the long-term preservation of authentic digital records. The policy framework suggested here could serve as a basis for either establishing national or institutional policy or developing standards and guidelines for long-term preservation of authentic digital records.
