  • The purpose of this study is to develop a program for the automatic derivation of the symbolic equations necessary for the kinematic and dynamic analyses of the spatial mechanism. For this purpose, a symbolic manipulation package called MCSYMA is used. Every symbolic equation is formulated using relative joint coordinate to obtain the numerically efficient system equations. These equations are produced in FORTRAN statements and linked to a FORTRAN program for numerical analysis. Several examples are taken for comparison with the commercial package called DADS which is using Cartesian coordinate approach. Also, this symbolic formulation approach is compared with a conventional numerical approach for an example. The results show that this symbolic approach with relative joint coordinate system is most efficient in computational time among three and is recommended for the derivation of macro elements frequently used.

  • To obtain the convenient solution of the multibody dynamic systems composed of flexible beams, linear finite element technique is adopted and the nodal coordinates are interpolated in the global inertia frame. Mass matrix becomes an extremely simple constant matrix and the force vector also becomes extremely simple because Coriolis acceleration and centrifugal force are not required. And the elastic force is also simply computed from the moving frame attached to the material. To solve the global differential algebraic euation. an ODE technique is adopted after Lagrange multiplier is computed by the accelerated iterative technique, and the time demanding procedures such as Newton-Raphson iterations and decomposition of the big matrix are not required. The accuracy of the present solution is checked by a well-known example problem.

  • In this study, a crab robot is implemented in H/W based on four-bar linkage mechanism and Jansen mechanism, and its kinematics is analysed. A vision camera is attached to the mechanism, which makes the proposed robot a kind of biologically inspired robot for image acquisition. Three ultrasonic sensors are adopted for obstacle avoidance. In addition, the biologically inspired robot can achieve the mission appointed by a programmer outside, based on RF and Blue-tooth communication module. For the design and implementation of a crab robot, it is need to get joint variable, a foot point, and their relation. Thus, the proposed kinematic analysis is very important process for the design and implementation of legged robots.

  • It is expected that the typical lifestyle of the future will be transformed into an opulent and comfortable existence as the quality of life improves due to the increase in household income and reduction in working hours. In the meantime, as the standard of living becomes increasingly more comfortable and plentiful, the toll on physical health becomes magnified as a result of obesity and insufficient exercise caused by super nutrition and change in labor conditions (from physical labor to mental labor). This has instigated a deep awareness in fitness on the part of many people, forcing them to recognize the significance of daily exercise and physical activity. The high annual growth rate in the fitness and athletic apparatus market, which is more than 20%, is attributed to this phenomenon. The Elliptical Cross Trainer(ECT), which has drawn wide attention recently, is a non-impact athletic apparatus that not only promotes exercise of the upper body parts in such sports as skiing but also the exercise of lower parts of the body on a treadmill. It is a type of cross training athletic gear that has been developed for aerobic exercise throughout the entire body. It has already formed a market as big as that of the treadmill in Europe, America, etc. Recently, its demand is growing sharply in the Korean markets as well as those in Northeast Asian countries, Despite such demand increase and expansion, since most of the expensive ECTs are exclusively supplied by suppliers in only a few advanced countries, localization of the ECT is urgently required in order to enhance competitiveness of Korean manufacturers and to expand the market. This paper introduces the process and results of a design-engineering cooperative study that was peformed for the development of the ECT.

  • Various types of buckets are used as unloading facilities for raw material at unloading wharfs. Scissors type buckets, among them, has been being used widely because of their short cycle time and structural simplicity. However, the scooping capacity, especially for hardened remainder ore, of some buckets are unsatisfactory because of poor design concept of the buckets. In this study, the effects of the design parameters on the scooping performance of the buckets are investigated under kinematic and dynamic analysis. Further, the schemes and design guidelines for designing new scissors type buckets are also presented to improve ore scooping capacity for hardened remainder ore.

  • In this paper, a planar car model with 3 degrees of freedom was analyzed using the concept of the roll center. To avoid ambiguity, force components which require experimental data were excluded. Only kinematic approach was used to find the position and orientation of the vehicle body and the position of the roll center. The roll center was found by the pole with infinitesimal movement and Kennedy-Aronhold theorem. Centrodes, which are the loci of instantaneous centers of planar motion, were constructed with analyzed results to show characteristics of vehicle body motion. To verify the presented analysis method in this paper, the locus of the roll center and the motion of a 3 D.O.F. planar car model were compared with those of the 1 D.O.F. model.

  • An inverse dynamic model of lower limbs is presented to calculate joint moments during gait. The model is composed of 4 segments with 3 translational joints and 12 revolute joints. The inverse dynamic method is based on Newton-Euler formalism. Kinematic data are obtained from 3 dimensional trajectories of markers collected by a motion analysis system. External forces applied on the foot are measured synchronously using force plate. The use of developed model makes it possible to calculate joint moments for variation of parameters.

  • A method for the inverse dynamic analysis of constrained multibody systems considering friction forces acting on kinematic joints is presented in this paper. The stiction and the sliding which represent zero and non-zero relative motions are considered during the inverse dynamic analysis. Actuating forces to control the position or the orientation of constrained multibody systems are usually calculated in the inverse dynamic analysis. An iterative procedure need to be employed to calculate the actuating forces when the friction is considered. Furthermore, the actuating forces are not uniquely determined during the stiction. These difficulties are resolved by the method presented in this paper.

  • The effects of contact configuration and kinematic motion on the wear of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were investigated. Two different contact configurations were adopted for wear testing under the two different kinematic motions with un-irradiated UHMWPE specimens. Wear of UHMWPE pins against the linear reciprocating stainless steel disks was 8% higher than that against the uni-directional repeat pass rotating disks. Wear of UHMWPE disks moving in the linear reciprocating motion against stainless steel ball was 37% higher than that moving in the uni-directional repeat pass rotating motion. The results in this study show that the contact configuration and kinematic motion of sliding definitely affect the wear of UHMWPE through the differences in the contact stress states of UHMWPE.

  • This paper presents the method to eliminate the constraint reaction in the Lagrange multiplier form equation of motion by using a generalized coordinate driveder from the velocity constraint equation. This method introduces a matrix method by considering the m dimensional space spanned by the rows of the constraint jacobian matrix. The orthogonal vectors defining the constraint manifold are projected to null vectors by the tangential vectors defined on the constraint manifold. Therefore the orthogonal projection matrix is defined by the tangential vectors. For correcting the generalized position coordinate, the optimization problem is formulated. And this correction process is analyzed by the quasi Newton method. Finally this method is verified through 3 dimensional vehicle model.
